Answers:

a. Show that the minimum mass of the pressure vessel will be: 2
.
.
We have:  and 
.
Then, 
.
Moreover, 4  2
.
Thus, 2 , where:
.
m: minimum mass of the pressure vessel (kg)
S: safety factor
p: internal pressure (MPa)
r: outer radius of the sphere (m)
: density of mass of the wall (kg/m3)
Y.S: yield stress of the wall material (MPa)

b. Select the alloy that will produce the lightest vessel:

- 1040 Carbon steel:

Y.S = 600MPa and  = 7.8Mg/m3
.
2 0.00013 2

- 304 stainless steel:

Y.S = 205MPa and  = 7.8Mg/m3
.
2 0.00038 2

- 3003-H14 aluminum:
Y.S = 145MPa and  = 2.73Mg/m3
.
2 0.00018 2

- Ti-5Al-2.5Sn:
Y.S = 827MPa and  = 4.46Mg/m3
.
2 0.00005 2

Assume that 2Spr3 is constant,

Then, the alloy that will be chosen to produce the lightest vessel is Ti-5Al-2.5Sn.
c. Select the alloy that will produce the minimum cost vessel:

- 1040 Carbon steel:

Cost = 0.00013 2 × 0.63$/kg = 0.81× 10-4 2 $

- 304 stainless steel:

Cost = 0.00038 2 × 3.70$/kg = 14 × 10-4 2 $

- 3003-H14 aluminum:
Cost = 0.00018 2 × 3.00$/kg = 5.4 × 10-4 2 $

- Ti-5Al-2.5Sn:
Cost = 0.00005 2 × 15.00$/kg = 7.5 × 10-4 2 $

Assume that 2Spr3 constant value,

Then, the alloy that will be chosen to produce the minimum cost vessel is 1040 carbon steel.

d. Calculate the corresponding flexural strength:

Flexural strength is calculated as the modulus of rupture.
Thus,
Since, F = 680N, L = 50mm, b = 13mm, h = 7mm

 80.0627N/mm2 = 80.0627MPa

Therefore, the flexural strength of the nylon sample is 80.0627MPa.

e. Calculate the breaking strength of the given glass plate containing:

From the formula:  2

Then,  
Since, m = 7GPa,  = 2 2 0.132 0.264 2.64 10 μ
and A 0.5µm long surface crack  c = 0.5µm
.
= 7 8.0423 10 80.423
.
Therefore, the breaking strength of the given glass plate is  = 80.423MPa.
