What is speech and language, what's the difference between speech and language?
What is the importance of speech in human relationship?

Explain 1. 1. What is Speech?

Speech is …
• A God-given faculty which sets apart human beings from animals. The major medium
of communication of our daily experiences is speech. Men communicate their thoughts,
ideas, desires and feelings by the use of intelligible words – by means of speech.

• Speech reflects man’s countless aspirations and frustrations, his proudest

achievements and ignoble failures. It would be very difficult, if not impossible for
men to coordinate their activities without speech.
• Speech is a vehicle for personality development, being the means of acquiring a
pleasing and acceptable personality. The way one articulates instantly reveals his or
her background, training, self-discipline and education. The impression one makes
depends much on the ease and liveliness with which he talks, how he advances or
defends his convictions and principles and the attractiveness of his voice.
• Effective speech communication implies not only a well-modulated voice but an
articulation that is easily understood and is accurate in the production of individual
sounds and word selection.
• Speech is a way of self-expression without brush or pen. It is essential to men’s
growth and eventually paves the way for their self-discovery and self-renewal.

1.2 The Concepts of Speech Communication

 The word communication originated from the Latin wordcommunicare, which

means “to impart”, “to share”, or“make common”
 Communication is a process where a sender encodes andimparts information via a
channel or a medium to areceiver, who, then, decodes and provides the sender

afeedback

 Speech communication involves the production and perception of sounds used in

spoken language. It also called oral communication.
 Communication means getting the message across. In speech communication, it
involves not only verbal, or the words we speak, but also non-verbal, or non-
linguistic symbols (also known as paralanguage)
 Listening is important in communication. By providing verbal and non-verbal
feedbacks, or both, the listener becomes an active participant in the communication
process.

The Levels or the Context of Speech Communication

 Intrapersonal is the level of communication involves only himself/herself. It includes

his/her inner thoughts, beliefs, and feeling. It is undertaken in order to clarify ideas,
analyze situations, or reflect upon something.
 Interpersonal This level of communication involves an exchange between a sender
and a receiver of a message, who are in a interdependent relation

Organs of Speech
 Respiratory System
 Phonatory System
 Resonatory System
 Articulatory System

 The respiratory system consists of lungs, diaphragm and the bronchial tubes which
lead to the throat. During speech, the lungs take in air rapidly and let it out slowly.

BREATHING EXERCISE:
1. Sit up straight. Exhale.
2. Inhale and, at the same time, relax the belly muscles. Feel as though the belly
is filling with air.
3. After filling the belly, keep inhaling. Fill up the middle of your chest. Feel your
chest and rib cage expand.
4. Hold the breath in for a moment, then begin to exhale as slowly as possible.
5. As the air is slowly let out, relax your chest and rib cage. Begin to pull your
belly in to force out the remaining breath.
6. Close your eyes, and concentrate on your breathing.
7. Relax your face and mind.
8. Let everything go.

 The phonatory system is responsible for the vibration of the vocal folds. The vocal
folds produce voice when they vibrate rapidly, that is, when an airstream passes
them.
 The function of the larynx as a vibration source is called phonation.

1. Think about blowing out birthdaycandles.

2. Begin to blow and then turn the breath into an "ooo" sound on a
comfortable pitch. Feel the tone begin in the breathing muscles.
3. Repeat.

Resonator

The voice produced in phonation isweak. It becomes strong and rich onlywhen
amplified and modified by thehuman resonators. Resonation is theprocess of voice
amplification andmodification.

 Articulation occurs when the tone produced in the larynx is changed into specific
sounds. This is the result of the movement of the articulators towards the points of
articulation.

2. The Importance of speech in human communication and relationship

• Communication facilitates the spread of knowledge and information among people;

Page14

• It forms relationships between people.

Speech is shared experience. When we speak, we give; we also receive. We get something out
of speech; others are able to get something out of our speech, too. As sender of a message, we
encode, meaning that we transform message into information. And, as receiver, we decode, or
interpret message into meaning.

LIBERAL ARTS AND EDUCATION

Technical Writing
Many people believe that the significance of communication is like the importance of
breathing. Indeed, communication facilitates the spread of knowledge and forms
relationships between people.

In human communication, there is nothing with comparable power except some

instinctive expressions of emotions. Speech can enable us to communicate these
emotions more clearly. It allows us to speak of the real things, things which are born in
our imaginations, that sometimes cannot be expressed by writing or drawing or dancing
etc.. It is aptly said words describe thousands of emotions and feelings.

First of all, communication helps to spread knowledge and information among people.

• Undoubtedly, the sharing knowledge and information process cannot function

without communication. As a result, companies cannot operate, and humanity will
be drowned in the abyss of ignorance.

For example, authors write books to impart knowledge to the World, and teachers share
their experience with their students. Also, friends or co-workers discuss their ideas with
each other, and companies exchange information with their subsidiaries and customers.
Besides, the advent of the Internet not only allows people to have better access to
knowledge and information in all fields, but also makes it easier and faster to contact
with people around the World.

Moreover, communication is the foundation of all human relationship.

• Communicating helps people to express their ideas and feelings, and it, at the same
time, helps us to understand emotion and thoughts of the others. At first, strangers
start talking and getting to know each other, and then the relationships are formed
when they have more interaction and communication. Communicating helps people
to express their ideas and feelings, and it, at the same time, helps us to understand
emotion and thoughts of the others.
Page15

• As a result, we will develop affection or hatred toward other people, and positive or
negative relationships will be created.

It is no doubt that communication plays a vital role in human life. It not only helps to
facilitate the process of sharing information and knowledge, but also helps people to
develop relationships with others. Therefore, the importance of communication cannot
be underestimated. Every day, we communicate with a lot of people including our

families, our friends, our colleagues, or even strangers. We should learn how to
communicate effectively to make our lives better.
