A. Use the Venn Diagram below to write words or phrases to compare and contrast
endocytosis and exocytosis.

ENDOCYTOSIS EXOCYTOSIS

- cell takes in molecules - cell secretes molecules

- transport across
plasma membrane
- forms new vesicles from - fusion of vesicles with
- large amount of molecules the plasma membrane
the plasma membrane are transported

- provide mechanisms for - many secretory cells uses exocytosis to

- has 3 types: phagocytosis, pinocytosis, rejuvinating or remodeling export product.
and receptor-mediated endocytosis plasma membrane

- requires energy

- involves packaging in
vesicles

- uses transport
proteins

B. Complete the table below.

Type of Bulk Transport Description Examples

Cell engulfs a particle and packaging it within
Phagocytosis a membranous sac called “food vacuole”. - An Amoeba eating bacterium.
The particle will be digested when the food
vacuole fuses with the lysosome. - White Blood Cells
Also known as “cellular eating.”

Pinocytosis Cell continually “gulps” droplets of extracellular - microvilli in a small intestine

fluids into tiny vesicles. Also known as “cellular - cells in the ducts of the kidneys
drinking”.
during the formation of urine

Receptor Mediated Specialized type of pinocytosis that enables the cell to
acquire bulk quantities of specific substances even if the - transport of glucose on us humans
substances are not that very concentrated in the extra-
endocytosis cellular fluid. It has receptor that binds with the solutes. - import of iron in mammalian cell
Endocytosis A process where molecules or substances are taken leucocytes, neutrophils, and monocytes
inside the cell. engulfing foreign substances like bacteria.
C. Guide Questions

Answer the following questions in 2-5 sentences only.

1. Why is it important that there are different types of proteins in plasma membranes for the
transport of materials into and out of a cell?

It is vital that there are different types of proteins in plasma membranes because the proteins is the one
who permits a cell to choose what compound will be transported into and out of the cell. This helps the cell
meet its needs without bringing in anything else that can cause harm to the cell.

2. Why do ions have a difficult time getting through plasma membranes despite their small
size?

Ions have difficult time getting through plasma membranes despite them being small because as we know, Ions are
charged. They are hydrophilic and can’t be with the lipid portion of the membrane because this part of membrane is
known as hydrophobic. As a result, Ions must be transported by carrier proteins or ion channels.
