II. Writing Introduction

An introduction is the first paragraph of a written research paper, or the first thing you
say in oral presentation, or the first thing people see, hear, or experience about your study.
Introduction is overview of the topic.
Without an introduction, it will be very difficult for the readers to figure out what you
are trying to say. There is a need to create a thread of an idea that they will follow through your
paper presentation. The introduction gives the reader the beginning of the piece of thread so
they can follow it.
If your study changes in process, it is important to make sure that your introduction
accurately reflects what you will be saying. If, however, you have written a good outline and
stick to it, then it is fine to start writing your introduction first. Just make sure in your
proofreading that you have kept the thread consistent throughout the paper. Start with a
couple of sentences that introduce your topic to your reader. You do not have to give too much
detailed information; save that for the body of your paper. Make these sentences as interesting
as you can. Through them, you can hook a reader and get them very interested in the line of
thinking you are going to develop in your study. You may establish the connection of your study
in the field of education. The length of your introduction depends on the length and complexity
of your study, but generally it should not exceed two pages.

Sample Introduction of a Research Paper:

Title: Communicative Competence and Communication Involvement of the Selected Students

in Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Muntinlupa

INTRODUCTION

English has become the language of science and technology and is used by scientist
throughout the world to communicate. It is also the most exact language in the world; it is
possible misinterpretation of its meaning. English also has the largest vocabulary of any
language and so it has the greatest descriptive power.
According to Chomsky (1965) competence is the perfect knowledge of an ideal speaker-listener
of the language in a homogeneous speech community, thus, individuals in the whole world
tend to develop themselves just to gain competence in speaking and writing.
Communicative competence extends to both knowledge and expectation of who may or may
not speak in certain settings, when to speak and when to remain silent, whom one may speak
to, how one may talk to persons of different statuses and roles, how to ask for and give
information, how to request, how to give commands, etc. in short, everything involving the use
of language and other communicative dimensions in particular social settings. It needs to be
pointed out that cultural differences can and do produce conflicts or inhibit communication. For
example, certain family groups are accustomed to waiting several minutes in silence before
responding to a question or taking a turn in conversation, while the other families, they may be
talking to have very short time frames for responses or conversational turn-taking, and find
silences embarrassing. In this way, the concept of communicative competence must be
embedded in the notion of cultural competence or the total set of knowledge and skills which
speakers bring into a situation, The dynamic interpersonal nature of communicative
competence is very useful in day to day lives of every individual, the reason to understand and
be understood during the process of communication has a great deal in everyday existence
since man by nature is always on the go, he is involved in day to day exposure, experiences in
various group conversation, thus, man never stops linking with others, and for this reason, he
should be equipped with communicative competence to be at his best while with the group.

III. ESTABLISING THE BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The researcher should bear in mind that this is the portion where in the readers will
absorb the origin of the problem by describing the circumstances which suggested the
research. This presents the main reasons for the conduct of the study and the discussion of the
main topic leading to the problem identification and definition. This serves as the continuation
of the thread after the piece was introduced, thus, the interest of the readers should be
maintained burning.
Background of the study is the in depth discussion about the topic.
By answering the questions in the Practice Task you will easily construct your own
background of the study. Just make sure that you will use your observation and readings to
construct the details needed in the provided spaces.
Practice Task
By Focusing on your topic make sure to answer the following statements to establish the
Background of the Study, provide your answer in a narrative form so that this will already serve
as your background of your study.

IV. Writing the Objectives of the Study
The OBJECTIVES of a research study summarize what is to be achieved by the study.
Objectives should be closely related to the statement of the problem. For example, if
the problem identified is low utilization of child welfare clinics, the general objective of the
study could be to identify the reasons for this low utilization, in order to find solutions.
The general objective of a study states what researchers expect to achieve by the study
in general terms.
It is possible (and advisable) to break down a general objective into smaller, logically
connected parts. These are normally referred to as specific objectives. Specific objectives
should systematically address the various aspects of the problem and the key factors that are
assumed to influence or cause the problem. They should specify what you will do in your study,
where and for what purpose.
By enumerating the questions that you want to answer through your research, you have
to generally state your problem through your title and specifically identify the objectives of
your study.
For example: Based from the Title "The Classroom Discipline and the Health Condition of
the Grade 6 Teachers in Bayanan Elementary School: Basis for a Teacher's Guide in the
Classroom"
Then, the general objective will be;
General Objective: To determine the classroom discipline and health condition of
theselected Grade 6 Teachers in Bayanan Elementary School.
Specific Objectives:
1. To define classroom discipline needed by Grade 6.
2. To determine the health condition of the Grade 6 teachers.
3. To cite articles on classroom discipline and health condition.
4. To conduct a survey on the issue.
5. To develop a teacher's guide in handling classroom discipline based on the
findings of this study.
Objectives are set to establish what the researcher is trying to attain, through research
he will answer whatever questions may arise incorporated in the study.
To validate each objective, it has to be within the following characteristics:
1. Answerable though research, interviews, observations and survey.
2. Never answerable only by "yes or no".
3. Controversial but legal, safe to public knowledge.
4. Need factual bases before it can be attained.
5. Aimed for common good.
6. Promoting change for better situation.

VII. ILLUSTRATING CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
This part is the illustration of the statement of the problem, to let the researcher
creatively design the concept map of his study.
This provides the actual content of the statement of the problem which may be
presented in an Input-Process-Output form or the so called IPO or it may be presented in an
Independent-Dependent Variable form commonly called IVDV Format.
In the Input Box the variables in the statement of the problem are listed, in the Process
Box everything that the researcher will conduct during the actual research will be stated like
data gathering, survey, interview and observation, and in the Output Box, the expected project,
proposed or seminar-workshop will be placed here.

Hypothesis is the prediction that there will be a relationship between two variables. The
hypothesis will be accepted or rejected in the findings of the study. You may use only
one among the following or both.
Alternative Hypothesis:
There is no significant relationship between the classroom discipline and health
condition of the respondents.
Null Hypothesis:
There is no significant relationship between the classroom discipline and health
condition of the respondents.
IX. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
This part of the study serves as the support for all the facts to be searched and placed in
the study, this part explores on the different books and journals which contain the variables
(important words) found in the introduction and objectives of the study.

Communicative Competence
As stated by Lee and Van Paten (2003) the language a child heard/ spoken in his
immediate environment and the way his family, friends, teachers, relatives responded in him as
he experimented with works are of equal importance to him in learning the language. The more
language experiences a child has, the grater the opportunities for developing a rich vocabulary,
just the same with developing his communicative competence.
Yasukata Yano (2001) suggested that the English language for international
communication must be simple, plain, and regular in their linguistic forms and structures. Also,
he mentioned that successful language use for communication presupposes the development
of communicative competence in the users of that language and that the use of language is
constrained by the socio-cultural norms of the society where the language is used.
The educated person is an articulate speaker and discriminating listener. The vital
functions of communicative competence in people's lives have been acknowledged not only by
experts in the fields of researchers, practitioner in second language acquisition. He also
reiterated that speaking a language is especially difficult for foreign language learners because
effective oral communications requires the ability to use the language appropriately in social
interactions involves not only verbal communication but also paralinguistic elements of speech.
(Wolfson, 2001)
According to Jenkins (2000) Language is the center of human life. It’s one of the most
important ways of expressing love hatred for people; it is vital in achieving many of man's goals
and careers, it is the source of artistic satisfaction of simpler pleasure. Furthermore, it was
emphasized that language as a measure of communicative competence, is used for planning
one's lives and remembering one's past; people exchange ideas and experiences through
language, they likewise identify themselves with people who speak the same language, some
people are able to do this in more than one language.
However, Berns (1999) cited to consider language for communicative competence, as
the important instrument of social communications. Furthermore, he stressed that language is
the means through which are express his ideas and influences others. The development
parallels the growth of the child's idea. In fact, language is considered one of the most
important indices of mental development.
As stated by Lee and Van Paten (2003) the language a child heard/spoken in his
immediate environment and the way his family, friends, teachers, relatives responded in him as
he experimented with works are of equal importance to him in learning the language. The more
language experiences a child has, the grater the opportunities for developing a rich vocabulary,
just the same with developing his communicative competence.
Learning a second language which is part of developing the communicative competence
is entirely different from the perspective of learning one's native language which starts from
birth. Learning second language always goes with difficulties which increasingly diminish as one
obtains greater mastery of the second language. (Geest, 1999)
Try to notice that each paragraph presented above has a source and they came from
related literatures such as books and journals, in short the first important words from the
sample introduction has been researched from various sources which will be placed in your
related literature.

XI. Unders
tanding Methodology
This part contains the process of preparing the research instrument called survey questionnaire
as well as the presentation of tables based from the results of the survey.
Identifying the Respondents
Take note that after researching from books and journals, you need to support your data with
actual results from people who may be involved or affected with the problems you would like
to research, we call them respondents, thus, it will be very helpful if you will get actual data
from them.
For example: In achieving your objectives above, you may survey on the teachers in grade 6
from Bayanan Elementary School. Since the experience that you will encounter is the first
priority of this subject, you may be allowed to have 15 respondents, it will be the least number
to be used in this task.
XII. Writing the Conclusion
Conclusion
The conclusion of the research paper is the most valuable single part of it. All the
material you have gathered means nothing to your reader until you present the conclusion you
have reached as a result of your research. Analyze and evaluate your main points for your
reader, also consider the consequences and general implications of them to your conclusion.
Although no actual new information is usually introduced in the conducting paragraphs, the
conclusion is the only original contribution you offer in your paper. It manifests the value of
your research as well as your understanding of the material that you have presented. It should
be a strong recapitulation of your major ideas.
Remember, you need to match your conclusion with the member of problems.

XIII. Writing the Recommendation
Recommendation

 Include concrete suggestion which is something “doable”.

 Remedial action to solve the problem.
 Further research to fill in gaps in our understanding.
 Directions for further investigation on this or related topics.
This is your chance to help the people in-charge, the beneficiaries, and the possible
carriers of the problem by giving them inputs based from your finding.
The input must be achievable, inexpensive, useful, functional and legal.
It has to be stated in a manner that will help solve the problems encountered.
Before you could recommend, there is a need to know the pros and cons of what you
want to happen, that’s why brainstorming with some experts will be very much needed.
A devil’s advocate (the person who will antagonize the statement) is also needed in the
brainstorming so that the output will be more accurate and realistic.
Arrange your recommendation based on the items addressed to the same person or
organization, for example:
To the Dean of the College, To the English Teachers,

XIV. Constructing the Survey Questionnaire

Consider your objectives to productively accomplish the survey. As a reminder it will be very
hard to construct the survey questionnaire unless you are done with your research for related
literature, because the statements to be done in the survey has to be realistic and sensible.
For Example: Let’s consider the 1st objective above:
