Lesson 5 – Spot the differences between 2D shapes & 3D objects February 24, Wednesday, 2021
Learning Objectives:
E1.1 sort 3D objects and 2D according to one attribute at a time, and identify the sorting rule being used
Mental set:
- Students look at the picture of multiple shapes and sort by attributes (e.g., what belong and what does
not belong in a group)
- Definition learning: attributes are characteristics or features of an object or shape (e.g., length, area,
colour, texture, ability to roll)
- Definition learning: geometric prosperities: used to identify 2D shapes & 3D objects
Practice(breakout rooms):
Worksheet: Venn diagram
- Teachers will provide pictures of 2D and 3D shapes, students will need to use Venn diagram to sort and
classify those shapes by their attributes
- Write one sentence about their differences and similarities
Consolidation:
Students share their worlds and explain
- Why did you think this way?
- How do you know?
Learning Objectives:
E1.1 sort 3D objects and 2D shapes according to one attribute at a time, and identify the sorting rule being used
E1.2 Construct 3D objects and identify 2D shapes contained within structures and objects
Mental set:
- Nearpod racing game : what are the names of the shapes?
Input:
- 3D virtual tour and recognize shapes in the structure
- Introduce the building activity
Practice:
- Breakout rooms (building with blocks)
Consolidation:
Students share their worlds and explain
- What did you build?
- What are the shapes can you recognize in your structure? How do you know?
- What attribute of the shape helped you build your structure? Corner? Curved surface? Flat surface?
Consolidation:
- Share works and explain
- Students can explain to the class what they have and why?
Learning Objectives:
E1.5 Give and follow directions for moving from one location to another
Mental set:
- Math talk which one doesn’t belong (look at the shapes that are different sizes)
Input:
- Introduce length of the shape (2D shapes)
Practice (breakout rooms):
- Use Jamboard to measure shapes based on the length. Teachers will provide noun standard measurement
tools, e.g., image of paper clips/stickers
- Students aline measuring tools to measure the length of the shapes and record how many stickers/paper
clips does the shape have
- Compare two shapes and circle the shape with the longer length
Consolidation (breakout rooms):
- Share works and which shape do you think with the longer length?
Mental Set:
- nearpod game (which one is taller, longer, bigger, smaller etc…)
Input: demonstrate water filling in thin glass, wide glass etc…= showing greater or lesser capacity (3 containers)
- Have them make predictions
- Purpose is for them to observe that different objects can have lesser or greater capacities
Consolidation:
- discussion
Mental set:
- Discuss: how can we create 3D figures?
Practice:(breakout rooms)
- Toothpicks/pasta/thin lego/q-tips and marshmallows/playdough (can have students make home-made
playdough beforehand) to build 3D shapes (activity) / or Origami folding/ or Drawing (3D figures)
Consolidation:
- Students share structures with the class and explain what shapes/figures they have created
