Introduction of Netflix

● Netflix is a media streaming and video rental company which is founded in 1997
● Corporate headquarters are in Los Gatos, California
● In 1999 netflix began offering an online subscription service through internet
● Netflix had ten thousands movie title in its catalog
● In 2006 Netflix launched the $1 million Netflix price contest to improve its recommendation
system
● In 2007 Netflix began offerings subscribers option to stream one of its movies and televisions
● Netflix introduced a streaming-only plan that offered unlimited streaming services and no DVD’s
● Netflix expanded beyond the US by offering the streaming only plan in canada in 2010
Success of Netflix
● The Success story of Netflix is an inspiring tale for many young entrepreneurs
● Bringing a peppy and energetic notion in the streaming industry, Netflix becomes a craze in the
digital revolution center
● Netflix started increasing its online library for subscribers with a series of superhit videos, movies,

Reasons why Netflix is not able to establish in China:

○ Netflix will incur losses if they compete with Chinese streaming platforms

○ Streaming platforms get high revenue but the profits come from ads

○ East culture and men are displayed as lesser ones to the Western culture
Expansion Strategy
● Adjacent markets- Netflix first expanded to the countries which are geographically situated
near the USA, such as Mexico and Canada. Then the countries which were similar in
regulations and culture were pursued.

● Localisation- Netflix started by localizing its marketing campaign. It went out of its way to
design a localized user interface for new markets and to produce quality subtitles in local
languages.
● Gathering Insights- Netflix does extensive research into the new target market. But it also
uses data analytics to gather valuable insights after it starts operating in the new market.
