Yet (halbuki)
.

ama yarışı kazanamadı)
- The trade union asked for a twenty percent increase in wages and salaries and the
company management accepted it.
kabul etti.)
“and” “but ve “so” bağlaçlarında genellikle özne ortak olduğu için genelşlikle özne
tekrar yazılmaz. İlaveten, bu kısaltmalarda virgul kullanılmaz.
- The commander was tired but confident (Komutan yorgun ama kendinden emindi.)
Yet = halbuki, oysa demektir ve “but” gibi zıtlık bildirir. Bu arada not edelim ki: günlük
konuşmalarda daha pratik olduğundan “but” tercih edilir.
- I was expecting him to be a great man, yet he amounted to nothing. (Onun büyük
bir adam olmasını bekliyordum halbuki o hiçbirşey olmadı.)
- You must love family life or never get married.
- He didn’t contact his doctor nor did he call his family. (Doktoruyla temasa geçmedi.
Ne de ailesini aradı.)
- I don’t want to visit anybody nor do I want anybody to come to me. (Kimseyi ziyaret
- I have seen her several times, but I can’t recognize him now. (Onu bir kaç
kez gördüm ama şimdi kendisini tanıyamam.)
Bu yapılarda iki cümle vardır. Birinci cümle bitmiş, noktalanmıştır. Ama ikinci cümle
birinci cümleyle ilişkilidir. İşte bu cümle bağlayıcıları ikinci cümlenin başında,
ortasında veya sonunda olabilirler.
- We have welcomed our guests. Furthermore, we sent them back their home at our
expenses.
(Misafirlerimizi ağırladık. Ayrıca, masrafı üstlenerek onları evlerine geri gönderdik.)

ya da kredi kartına ihtiyacınız olur.)
“also” de, da, ayrıca anlamına gelir. “as well” sözcüğü de aynı anlamdadır fakat
daima cümle sonuna konulur.
* Not only ..........but also bağlacının kullanımında “not only” kısmı cümlenin başına
alınarak da yazılabilir. Bunun nedeni, cümleciğe vurgu yapılmak istenmesidir.
- I not only want to make money (=not only do I want to make money), but also earn
respect. (Ben sadece para kazanmak değil, aynı zamanda saygınlık kazanmak
istiyorum.)
conjunction” olur.
