Five Things to Do on Your Layover at:
Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson
Where: Atlanta, GA, United States

June 23, 2010 at 9:52 AM | by kjb | Comments (0)

We’ve all had layovers that were a little longer than initially expected. Mechanical delays, weather

emergencies, and all kinds of other issues make that tight 45-minute connection turn into something

extraordinary. We can’t get promise your flight will depart on time, but we can offer some time killers

at the airport.

Five picks for spending a few extra hours at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International

Airport:

· Grab A Gourmet Meal:

One Flew South is definitely a little more pricey than the usual food court options, so it would be

ideal to visit when traveling with a colleague responsible for picking up the bill. The place bills itself as

having a “Southernational” menu, but some of their stronger points are their cocktails and sushi.
We’ve enjoyed their “Crunch Roll,” and have to say that the rice wine poached shrimp, cucumber,

and bourbon eel sauce was delicious. The crunch comes from the puffed rice—AKA rice krispies—stuck

to the outside. If you’re stuck at the airport and in need of a decent meal—with homemade chicken

soup available during weather delays—this is the place. It’s in Concourse E.

· Take A Nap:

For the times in which the layover is extended beyond your level of comfort, it might be worth it to

grab a quick nap. Skip lounging across of row of terminal chairs and head to Minute Suites within

Concourse B. We’ve mentioned them before, and as of now the little slices of rest and relaxation are

only available at the world’s busiest airport. Each suite comes with a daybed sofa, fresh pillows and

blankets, HDTV, and of course WiFi for when you just can’t get to sleep. As of late last year, rates

were running around $30 for the first hour, and you could start booking your much needed break

online. However, it appears that now reservations must be made in person or over the telephone.

· Go Shopping:

We’ve seen all kinds of weird vending machines during our airport travels, so if you’re stuck in Atlanta

you might as well bring something good back for friends and family. Skip the Hotlanta shirts and shot

glasses and head straight for the iPod vending machines. There seems to be like one per

concourse, so you won’t have to go far to cross a few people off your holiday gift list—you can never
start too early! Sure it might be a little expensive, but you can always just window shop. We can

assure you that there won’t be any high-pressure sales. You might even learn a new language.

· Hit Up The Clubs:

This airport is known for one airline and one airline only—Delta. You can’t go too far without running

into a Delta Sky Club, and visiting the airport lounge might be the best way to turn an otherwise

unfortunate delay into a relaxing experience. The clubs have free booze—both hard and soft varieties

—and there’s usually a generous assortment of cheese, crackers, carrots, and cookies. It’s not a

gourmet meal but it’s something to help wash down all that alcohol.

Day passes to the club are available for $50, and if you have certain credit cards you might be able to

sneak in for a few dollars less. We’d pick the club in the middle of Concourse A upstairs near

the Chili’s, or either club in Concourse E.

· Grab A Not-So-Gourmet Meal:

We thought Chick-fil-A was one of the best options at the airport, but we forgot about another

regional fast food location that might be worth a visit if the airport’s fine dining is just a little too much

for you this trip. Krystal is like the South’s answer to White Castle, so expect a bag or tray filled

with plenty of baby burgers. We’re not promising that this is going to be a life-changing experience,
but you can at least try a burger near gate A28 in Concourse A to cross the restaurant off your fast-

food bucket list.
