New Friends
Jane is a new student at Community Elementary School in Bristol, a small city
in the west of England. Now, she is meeting new friends.

Gemma: Why did you leave London, Jane?

Jane: My dad got a job here in Bristol. I didn’t want to move


because I had a lot of good friends there and I really
liked my school.

Gemma: Was it difficult to leave all your friends?

Jane: Yes, it was.

Gemma: Look, I’m going swimming at the sports centre this


evening. Would you like to come, too?

Jane: Yes, please. I like swimming.

Teacher’s notes
I. Encourage students to describe the pictures without reading the dialogue so you can set the context of
the lesson.

II. Explain the situation – Jane left London and now she is attending a new school in Bristol. Show
students on a map where Bristol is, so they can understand the situation better.

III. Students read the 1st. part of the dialogue. Elicit - Is Jane happy to move to Bristol? - Why?

IV. Students read the 2nd part of the dialogue. Elicit - Do you think Jane is happier now? - Why?

V. Students do exercise 1. Check orally and ask for the evidence of their answers.

VI. Students do exercise 2. Check orally. Use this activity to make students aware of the functions which
