A CHANGE FOR A CHANGE: WAKE UP CALL

A Reflection Paper on the “Ten Lessons for a Post-Pandemic World:
Life is Digital”

The Coronavirus or COVID-19-pandemic has made numerous turns of events and has

affected many of our daily patterns and presumption. It has dramatically changed our lifestyle and

the whole world. The book entitled “Ten Lessons for A Post Pandemic World (Life is Digital)

written by Fareed Zakaria. The book discussed various related scenarios that are relatable in our

current situation of today, few of It are the devastating political, social, technological, and the

economical consequences that occurred during the pandemic and has/will greatly affect the future

outcome of our world and most importantly our well-being.

In terms of political aspect before the pandemic struck our lives various neighboring

nations and countries are open for each other and always willing to help each other but now during

the pandemic each country are on their own, closing their boarders and limiting access of entry

towards their country or nation in order to limit the spread of the virus. Closing their boarders and

focusing on their own countries’ survival made a chain reaction to many aspects. For instance, in

the economical aspect, in fact history filled with years of war and peace over the last century

countries spend more time at peace and war trade travel and investment across borders soared high

and beyond profitable. the strong bonds of interdependence built with economic integration made

competitors rose to become geopolitical challenges along with everything good, services, culture,

and ideal moved around and warp speed all over the world as well as the virus. Everything was

connected, a country cannot be connected alone in similar with a man cannot live being alone or

the saying “No man is an Island”.

In the socio, technological and economic aspect, more and more technologies have been

developed in order to coop with the tragic scenarios due to the virus. Many individuals have lost

their jobs, many business owners have lost their companies and begun to cease operations. But due

to the rampant development of the technology and the way most people must stay within the safety

of their home, with the use of technology some are still connected with each other. Most of the

social and economic transactions have been still possible despite of the pandemic thanks to

technology.

Despite of those socio-economic effect, we still cannot say that their still alarming decrease

of our economic rate and a lot of people are losing their jobs, income, limiting their funds in

providing for themselves and their family, and not even knowing when will everything go back to

normal before the virus even came to light. For example, Small and developing countries that

depends on their tourism for their country’s GDP but as of now most of the tourist spot are almost

like a ghost town with no tourist lingering the area. According to the International Labor

Organization, approximately more than 400 million could be lost or have already lost their jobs.

The World Bank also forecasts a rampant decline in remittances this year 2020 and more at least

800 million individuals and families will have to deal the effect of the pandemic and will have a

hard time to be able to cope and meet their basic needs for themselves and for their family.

In Fareed’s book it does not specifical tells about the Covid-19 specifically but rather the

result and outcome made due to the pandemic. Hence the title of the book “Ten Lessons for A Post

Pandemic World” the word ”post” defines as a final result of something, and the book clearly

specified the post effect of the pandemic especially in political, social, technological, and the

economical aspects. In the book COVID-19 is merely acting as an accelerator to existing global

trends. Therefore, the book is “not about the pandemic, but rather about the world that is coming

into being as a result.”

In conclusion and realization of the book I’ve read entitled Ten Lessons for a Post-

Pandemic World: Life is Digital” written by Fareed Zakaria I think it is safe to conclude that this

COVID-19 will mot be the last pandemic we human kind will face, and this book is not a story

that foretells the result of the virus but rather a wake-up call for all of humanity and realize it is

time to change our ways because the ways we are doing right know, all our current lifestyle and

even the way of productions for multiple items just for the sake of our survival and luxury will

eventually become the sole reason for our extinction. The way we have all been living is way to

risky and it could easily cause our downfall. As Covid-19 carved and change our lives, we must

change for the better and not for the worse, that’s why my title in this reflection paper is “A Change

for a Change: Wake - Up call”.
