Title of lesson: Protein Synthesis

Your Name: Amber Corwin

Length of lesson: 1 class period, 115 minutes

Context of Lesson: Before studying protein synthesis, students learned about DNA
structure and then DNA replication. The day before this lesson, the students
watched a video and completed a worksheet introducing them to RNA as well as
protein synthesis. After this lesson, students will be reviewing DNA structure, DNA
replication, and protein synthesis and then will be taking a test.

Overview: Students will be given notes on RNA & protein synthesis which will be
gone over in class. Students will practice finding RNA base pairs as well as practice
using a codon table. At the end of the lesson, students will complete an exit ticket.

Central problem/ Essential question:

● DNA is the instructions for making any living thing… How does it do this?
● How do errors in DNA code lead to inheritable disorders?

Scaffold Questions:

● What is a protein?
● What is RNA? What is its structure? How is it produced?
● How does the structure of DNA and RNA connect to their function of
producing proteins?

Learning Goal:

Students will be able to:

● Describe the process, locations, and results of protein synthesis

Anticipated student conceptions or challenges to understanding: I expect students

to get translation and transcription confused. I will share 2 ways in which to
remember which comes first (one introduced from the video and the way that I
always remembered). I also expect students to get easily confused about all the steps
of protein synthesis. I will continuously ask students where things are taking place,
what is being made, and who the key players are in both translation and
transcription. That way, they will keep being reminded and if they don’t remember
every little step, they will at least take away the main points. I also expect students to
have a hard time visualizing the process of protein synthesis so I will show them a
video of the process.
Materials/Evidence/Sources:

● RNA & Protein Synthesis PPT

● Transcription & Translation Practice Worksheets
● Exit Ticket

Instructional Sequence:

1. Show students and read outloud schedule for the class day as well as the
learning goal.

2. Go over PPT up until the “Transcription Practice” slide.

3. Give students transcription practice worksheet. Give students time to

complete and then go over as a class.

4. Go through the rest of the PPT.

5. Give students translation practice worksheet. Give students time to

complete and then go over as a class.

6. Show students protein synthesis video (found on the last slide of PPT).

7. Give students exit ticket.

Assessment: I will be assessing student understanding during the lecture through

the use of choral response and random selection. I will stop and check for
understanding frequently throughout the lesson. As students work on their
translation and transcription practice, I will walk around the room to see who is
understanding and who needs extra help. When going over the transcription
practice, I will expect everyone in the class to shout out the complementary bases
together. If I hear a lot of responses, I will be able to tell that the class is
understanding. Finally, I will assess student understanding after the lesson is over
by reading through student answers on the exit tickets.
