You are on page 1of 3

Part 1

1. Determine the average value of ø for the entire boring under footing level. Use the data from
boring B-4, equation 3.30, and the reference in the Bb. Assume the footing elevation is 143.7.

2. Using the information from Step 1, plot a curve showing allowable bearing capacity (FS = 3)
vs. width of a square footing

3. Assuming ht critical section is at the distance d/2 from the face of the column, determine the
depth of the concrete footing. (fc' = 3000 psi)

4. Expand on your report from Phase 1, to include Phase 2

Part 2

Given the boring logs:

1. Draw site cross section along B1-B4-B-9

2. Draw cross section along B6-B4-B5

3. A short technical report including a cover page, a cover letter summarizing the information
from the boring logs and description of the project based on the cross section, and a sketch of
the cross section. A sample report is included for your reference (the sample report is 40 pages,
yours will be one page write up)
Project Phase 3
The following sketch which is superimposed on the boring plan:
Red line represents the outer limits of excavation and blue line represents the basement
concrete wall which is rigidly connected to the basement floor slab. The distance between the
walls

(Blue line) and the outer extent of excavation (red line) is 5 ft in all directions. The subgrade for
the basement slab is at Elv. 125. Using the given skecth, and infromation from Phase 1 and
Phase 2, complete the following tasks:

Excavation
1. Divide the surface area into grids of appropriate size (say 10 ft by 10 ft)
2. Determine an average depth for the grid based on the information from Phase 1
3. Determine the volume of each grid by multiplying the surface area of the grid by its average
depth.
4. Determine the total volume of excavation by adding the volumes of grids obtained from step

By the end of this task you will have an site where the bottom of excavation is at Elev. 125. The
slope of excvation at this stage will be steep and will call for special precaution which will not be
part of this phase of the project.
Hauling
1. How many truck load of a 25 ton/18 cy rear dump truck, will be needed to haul the excavated
material.
2. If the cost of moving soil is $50 per cy, how much will be the total cost of hauling the soils.

Basement wall
1. Using appropriate backfill material (https://constructionmentor.net/backfilling-foundation-
wall- 2/), plot the at-rest lateral earth pressure diagram for basement walls and calculate the
active force for North, South, East, and West basement walls.

Final Product
1. Report including Phase 1, 2, and 3 of the project.

Due Date
The due date for this project will be flexible and will range for December 10 to December 14.
The sooner you submit the project, the earlier you will get a presentation schdeuled. Remmebr
that the finla submittal will include all sbumittals in a professional format.
