. Now these [are] the

and·these names-of sons-of Israel the·ones-coming Egypt·ward with Jacob man Israel, which came into
Egypt; every man and his

ֵ ‫ָּבאּו‬ : household came with Jacob.

1:4 ‫ָּדן‬ ‫ְונ ְַפ ָּת ִלי‬ ‫ּגָד‬ ‫ְואָ ׁשֵ ר‬ :

Dan, and Naphtali, Gad,

1:5 ‫וַיְ ִהי‬ ‫ּכָ ל‬ ‫נֶפֶ ׁש ־‬ ‫י ְֹצאֵ י‬ +‫י ֶֶר‬ ‫קב ־‬

ֹ ‫ע‬
ֲ ‫ַי‬ ‫ִׁש ְב ִעים‬ ‫נָפֶ ׁש‬

And all the souls that
u·iei kl - nphsh itzai irk - ioqb shboim nphsh came out of the loins of
and·he-is-becoming all-of soul-of ones-coming-forth-of thigh-of Jacob seventy soul Jacob were seventy souls:
for Joseph was in Egypt
‫י סף‬
ֵ ‫ְו‬ ‫ָהיָה‬ ‫ְב ִמ ְצ ָריִ ם‬ : [already].

ָ ‫ַוּי‬ ‫י סף‬
ֵ ‫ְוכָ ל‬ ‫אֶ ָחיו ־‬ ‫ְוכֹל‬ ‫ַהּד ר‬ ‫ַההּוא‬ :

And Joseph died, and all
u·imth iusph u·kl - achi·u u·kl e·dur e·eua : his brethren, and all that
and·he-is-dying Joseph and·all-of brothers-of·him and·all-of the·generation the·he generation.

1:7 ‫ּובנֵי‬
ְ ‫יִ ְׂש ָראֵ ל‬ ‫ּפָ רּו‬ ‫וַּיִ ְׁש ְרצּו‬ ‫וַּיִ ְרּבּו‬

And the children of Israel
u·bni ishral phru u·ishrtzu u·irbu were fruitful, and increased
and·sons-of Israel they-were-fruitful and·they-are-roaming and·they-are-increasing abundantly, and multiplied,
and waxed exceeding
‫ַוּיַעַ ְצמּו‬ ‫ִּב ְמאֹד‬ ‫ו ִַּת ָּמלֵ א ְמאֹד‬ ‫ָהאָ ֶרץ‬ ‫ֹתם‬
ָ ‫א‬ : ‫פ‬ mighty; and the land was
filled with them.

and·they-are-being-staunch in·very very and·she-is-being-filled the·land with·them

1:8 ‫ָקם‬
ָ ‫ַוּי‬ + ֶ‫ָח ָדׁש ־ ֶמל‬ ‫עַ ל‬ ‫ִמ ְצ ָריִ ם ־‬ ‫י ַָדע ־ ל ֹא אֲׁשֶ ר‬ ‫י סף ־ אֶ ת‬
ֵ :

. Now there arose up a
u·iqm mlk - chdsh ol - mtzrim ashr la - ido ath - iusph : new king over Egypt, which
and·he-is-rising king new over Egypt who not he-knew » Joseph knew not Joseph.

1:9 ‫ֹאמר‬
ֶ ‫וַּי‬ ‫עַ ּמ ־ אֶ ל‬ ‫ִהּנֵה‬ ‫עַ ם‬ ‫ְּבנֵי‬ ‫יִ ְׂש ָראֵ ל‬ ‫ַרב‬ ‫ְועָ צּום‬

And he said unto his
u·iamr al - om·u ene om bni ishral rb u·otzum people, Behold, the people
and·he-is-saying to people-of·him behold ! people-of sons-of Israel many and·staunch of the children of Israel
[are] more and mightier
‫ִמ ֶּמּנּו‬ : than we:

1:10 ‫בה‬
ָ ‫ָה‬ ‫נִ ְת ַח ְּכ ָמה‬ ‫ל‬ ‫ּפֶ ן‬ ‫יִ ְר ֶּבה ־‬

Come on, let us deal
eb·e nthchkme l·u phn - irbe wisely with them; lest they
grant-attention-you ! we-shall-show-ourselves-wise to·him lest he-is-increasing multiply, and it come to
pass, that, when there
‫ְו ָהיָה‬ ‫ִּכי‬ ‫ִת ְק ֶראנָה ־‬ ‫נ סף ִמ ְל ָח ָמה‬
ַ ‫ְו‬ ‫ּגַם‬ ‫ֹׂשנְ אֵ ינּו ־ עַ ל הּוא ־‬ falleth out any war, they
join also unto our enemies,
u·eie ki - thqrane mlchme u·nusph gm - eua ol - shnai·nu
and fight against us, and
and·he-becomes that they-shall-proclaim war and·he-is-added even he on ones-hating-of·us
[so] get them up out of the
land.
‫ְונִ ְל ַחם‬ ‫ָּבנּו ־‬ ‫ְועָ לָ ה‬ ‫ִמן‬ ‫ָהאָ ֶרץ ־‬ :
u·nlchm - b·nu u·ole mn - e·artz :
and·he-nfights in·us and·he-ascends from the·land

1:11 ‫ָׂשימּו‬
ִ ‫ַוּי‬ ‫עָ לָ יו‬ ‫ׂשָ ֵרי‬ ‫ִמ ִּסים‬ ‫ְל ַמעַ ן‬ ‫עַ ּנֹת‬

Therefore they did set
u·ishimu oli·u shri msim lmon onth·u over them taskmasters to
and·they-are-placing over·him chiefs-of tributes so-that to-mhumiliate-of·him afflict them with their
burdens. And they built for
‫תם‬5
ָ ‫ְּב ִס ְב‬ ‫וַּיִ ֶבן‬ ‫עָ ֵרי‬ ‫ִמ ְס ְּכנ ת‬ ‫ְלפַ ְרעֹ ה‬ ‫ִּפתֹם ־ אֶ ת‬ ‫ְואֶ ת‬ ‫־‬ Pharaoh treasure cities,
Pithom and Raamses.

1:12 ‫ְוכַ אֲׁשֶ ר‬ ‫יְ עַ ּנּו‬ ‫אֹת‬ ‫יִ ְר ֶּבה ּכֵ ן‬ ‫ְוכֵ ן‬ ‫יִ ְפרֹץ‬

But the more they
u·k·ashr ionu ath·u kn irbe u·kn iphrtz afflicted them, the more
and·as·which they-are-mhumiliating »·him so he-is-increasing and·so he-is-breaching-forth they multiplied and grew.
And they were grieved
‫ַוּי ָֻקצּו‬ ‫ִמ ְּפנֵי‬ ‫ְּבנֵי‬ ‫ יִ ְׂש ָראֵ ל‬: because of the children of
Israel.

and·they-are-being-irritated from·faces-of sons-of Israel

1:13 ‫ֲבדּו‬
ִ ‫ַו ַּיע‬ ‫ִמ ְצ ַריִ ם‬ ‫ְּבנֵי ־ אֶ ת‬ ‫יִ ְׂש ָראֵ ל‬ +‫ְּבפָ ֶר‬ :

And the Egyptians made
u·iobdu mtzrim ath - bni ishral b·phrk : the children of Israel to
and·they-are-cmaking-serve Egyptians » sons-of Israel in·rigor serve with rigour:

1:14 ‫מ ְררּו‬
ָ ְ‫וַי‬ ‫ֵיהם ־ אֶ ת‬
ֶ ‫ַחּי‬ ‫עב ָֹדה‬
ֲ ‫ַּב‬ ‫ח ֶמר ָקׁשָ ה‬
ֹ ‫ְּב‬ ‫ּוב ְל ֵבנִ ים‬
ִ

And they made their
u·imrru ath - chii·em b·obde qshe b·chmr u·b·lbnim lives bitter with hard
and·they-are-membittering » lives-of·them in·service hard in·clay and·in·bricks bondage, in morter, and in
brick, and in all manner of
‫ּובכָ ל‬
ְ ‫עב ָֹדה ־‬
ֲ ‫ַּבּׂשָ ֶדה‬ ‫אֵ ת‬ ‫ּכָ ל‬ ‫עב ָֹד ָתם ־‬
ֲ ‫אֲׁשֶ ר‬ ‫עָ ְבדּו ־‬ ‫ָב ֶהם‬ service in the field: all their
service, wherein they made
u·b·kl - obde b·shde ath kl - obdth·m ashr - obdu b·em
them serve, [was] with
and·in·all-of service in·the·field » all-of service-of·them which they-served in·them
rigour.

ֶ ‫וַּי‬ + ֶ‫ֶמל‬ ‫ִמ ְצ ַריִ ם‬ ‫לַ ְמי ְַּלדֹת‬ ‫ָה ִע ְב ִרּיֹ ת‬ ‫אֲׁשֶ ר‬ ‫ׁשֵ ם‬

. And the king of Egypt
u·iamr mlk mtzrim l·mildth e·obrith ashr shm spake to the Hebrew
and·he-is-saying king-of Egypt to·the·ones-mbeing-midwives the·Hebrews(f) whose name-of midwives, of which the
name of the one [was]
‫ָהאַ ַחת‬ ‫ִׁש ְפ ָרה‬ ‫ְוׁשֵ ם‬ ‫ַהּׁשֵ נִ ית‬ ‫ ּפּועָ ה‬: Shiphrah, and the name of
the other Puah:

the·one Shiphrah and·name-of the·second Puah

1:16 ‫ֹאמר‬
ֶ ‫וַּי‬ ‫ְּביַּלֶ ְדכֶ ן‬ ‫ָה ִע ְב ִרּי ת ־ אֶ ת‬ ‫יתן‬
ֶ ‫ּור ִא‬
ְ ‫־ עַ ל‬
16
And he said, When ye do
u·iamr b·ild·kn ath - e·obriuth u·raithn ol - the office of a midwife to
and·he-is-saying in·to-mbe-widwife-of·you(p) » the·Hebrew-women and·you(p)-see on the Hebrew women, and see
[them] upon the stools; if it
‫ָהאָ ְבנָיִ ם‬ ‫ֵּבן ־ ִאם‬ ‫ה ִמ ֶּתן הּוא‬
ֲ ‫ַו‬ ‫אֹת‬ ‫ְו ִאם‬ ‫ַּבת ־‬ ‫ִהיא‬ [be] a son, then ye shall kill
him: but if it [be] a
e·abnim am - bn eua u·emthn ath·u u·am - bth eia
daughter, then she shall live.

1:17 ָ ‫יראן‬
ֶ ‫ו ִַּת‬ ‫ַה ְמי ְַּלדֹת‬ ‫הים ־ אֶ ת‬5ֱ
ִ ‫ָהא‬ ‫ְול ֹא‬ ‫עָ ׂשּו‬ ‫ּכַ אֲׁשֶ ר‬
17
But the midwives feared
u·thiran e·mildth ath - e·aleim u·la oshu k·ashr God, and did not as the king
and·they-are-fearing the·ones-mbeing-midwives » the·Elohim and·not they-did as·which of Egypt commanded them,
but saved the men children
‫ִּד ֶּבר‬ ‫יהן‬
ֶ ֵ‫אֲל‬ + ֶ‫ֶמל‬ ‫ו ְַּת ַחּיֶין ָ ִמ ְצ ָריִ ם‬ ‫ַהיְ לָ ִדים ־ אֶ ת‬ : alive.

1:18 ‫וַּיִ ְק ָרא‬ + ֶ‫ֶמל‬ ‫ִמ ְצ ַריִ ם ־‬ ‫לַ ְמי ְַּלדֹת‬ ‫ֹאמר‬
ֶ ‫וַּי‬ ‫לָ ֶהן‬

And the king of Egypt
u·iqra mlk - mtzrim l·mildth u·iamr l·en called for the midwives, and
and·he-is-calling king-of Egypt to·the·ones-mbeing-midwives and·he-is-saying to·them said unto them, Why have
ye done this thing, and have
‫ּדּוע‬
ַ ‫ַמ‬ ‫יתן‬
ֶ ‫ֲׂש‬
ִ ‫ע‬ ‫ַה ָּד ָבר‬ ‫ַהּזֶה‬ ָ ‫ו ְַּת ַחּיֶין‬ ‫ַהיְ לָ ִדים ־ אֶ ת‬ : saved the men children
alive?
mduo oshithn e·dbr e·ze u·thchiin ath - e·ildim :
for-what-reason you(p)-do the·thing the·this and-you(p)-are-mkeeping-alive » the·boys

1:19 ָ ‫ֹאמ ְרן‬

ַ ‫וַּת‬ ‫ַה ְמי ְַּלדֹת‬ ‫ּפַ ְרעֹ ה ־ אֶ ל‬ ‫ִּכי‬ ‫ל ֹא‬ ‫כַ ּנ ִָׁשים‬ ‫ַה ִּמ ְצ ִרּיֹ ת‬
19
And the midwives said
u·thamrn e·mildth al - phroe ki la k·nshim e·mtzrith unto Pharaoh, Because the
and·they-are-saying the·ones-mbeing-midwives to Pharaoh that not as·the·women the·Egyptians Hebrew women [are] not as
the Egyptian women; for
‫ָה ִע ְב ִרּיֹ ת‬ ‫ִּכי‬ ‫ָחי ת ־‬ ‫ֵהּנָה‬ ‫ְּבטֶ ֶרם‬ ‫ָּתב א‬ ‫אֲלֵ ֶהן‬ ‫ַה ְמיַּלֶ ֶדת‬ they [are] lively, and are
delivered ere the midwives
e·obrith ki - chiuth ene b·trm thbua al·en e·mildth
come in unto them.
the·Hebrew-women that lively-ones they(f) in·ere she-is-coming to·them the·one-mbeing-midwife

‫ְויָלָ דּו‬ :

and·they-give-birth

1:20 ‫ַוּיֵיטֶ ב‬ ‫הים‬5ֱ

ִ ‫לַ ְמי ְַּלדֹת א‬ ‫וַּיִ ֶרב‬ ‫ָהעָ ם‬

Therefore God dealt well
u·iitb aleim l·mildth u·irb e·om with the midwives: and the
and·he-is-cdoing-good Elohim to·the·ones-mbeing-midwives and·he-is-increasing the·people people multiplied, and
waxed very mighty.
‫ַוּיַעַ ְצמּו‬ ‫ ְמאֹד‬:

1:22 ‫וַיְ צַ ו‬ ‫ּפַ ְרעֹ ה‬ ‫ְלכָ ל‬ ‫עַ ּמ ־‬ ‫לֵ אמֹר‬ ‫ּכָ ל‬ ‫ַה ֵּבן ־‬

And Pharaoh charged all
u·itzu phroe l·kl - om·u l·amr kl - e·bn his people, saying, Every
and·he-is-minstructing Pharaoh to·all-of people-of·him to·to-say-of every-of the·son son that is born ye shall cast
into the river, and every
‫ַהּיִ ּל ד‬ ‫ַהיְ א ָֹרה‬ ‫ַּת ְׁש ִליכֻ הּו‬ ‫ְוכָ ל‬ ‫ַה ַּבת ־‬ daughter ye shall save alive.
