CHIMING OF THE HOUR

GREETING Dr. Jan Davis

OPENING VOLUNTARY Rejoice, the Lord Is King arr. Dan Forrest

Frode Gundersen, piano

* CALL TO WORSHIP (Psalm 95:1-2, NIV) Dr. Steve Pulliam

Pastor: Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord;
let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.
People: Let us come before him with thanksgiving
and extol him with music and song.

* OPENING HYMN 61 Come, Thou Almighty King ITALIAN HYMN

1. Come, thou almighty King, help us thy name to sing,
help us to praise! Father all glorious,
o'er all victorious, come and reign over us, Ancient of Days!
2. Come, thou incarnate Word, gird on thy mighty sword,
our prayer attend! Come, and thy people bless,
and give thy word success; Spirit of holiness, on us descend!
3. Come, holy Comforter, thy sacred witness bear
in this glad hour. Thou who almighty art,
now rule in every heart, and ne'er from us depart, Spirit of power!
4. To thee, great One in Three, eternal praises be,
hence, evermore. Thy sovereign majesty
may we in glory see, and to eternity love and adore!

* AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (The Apostles’ Creed)

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth;
and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead;
he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

* GLORIA PATRI 70 MEINEKE

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen. Amen.

CALL TO PRAYER Dr. Steve Pulliam

We give you thanks, great God, for the hope we have in Jesus,
who died but is risen and rules over all. We praise you for his presence with us.
Because he lives, we look for eternal life, knowing that nothing past, present, or yet to come
can separate us from your great love. For it is in Christ’s name that we pray.
CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Lord, bring new life where we are worn and tired;
new love where we have turned hard-hearted;
forgiveness where we feel hurt and where we have wounded;
and the joy and freedom of your Holy Spirit where we are prisoners ourselves.
Help us to trust your power to change our lives and make us new,
that we may know the joy of life abundant given in Jesus Christ, the Risen Lord. Amen.

PASTORAL PRAYER

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil,
for Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

* DOXOLOGY 95 OLD 100th

Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise Him, all creatures here below.
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host. Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

* HYMN 700 Abide with Me EVENTIDE

1. Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;
the darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide.
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.
2. Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day;
earth's joys grow dim; its glories pass away;
change and decay in all around I see;
O Thou who changest not, abide with me.
3. I need thy presence every passing hour.
What but thy grace can foil the tempter's power?
Who, like thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.

* SCRIPTURE LESSON Luke 24:13-35

This is the Word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

* CLOSING HYMN 700 Abide with Me EVENTIDE
4. I fear no foe, with thee at hand to bless;
ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.
Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if thou abide with me.
5. Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes;
shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.
Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee;
in life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.
