Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the background of the study, review

of related literature, conceptual framework, statement of the

problem, hypothesis, significance of the study, and scope and

limitation

Background of the Study

Transportation is a public conveyance of passengers or

goods from one location to another, especially as a commercial

enterprise (Barnes 2005 & Amegashie 2010)

Transportation is defined as the activity which primarily

is concerned with providing an increasing human satisfaction

through the changing of geographical location and the position

of people and goods. Transportation is considered a key factor

in the socio-economic growth of any country (Oduro 2012)

In the face of transport advancement coupled with

increasing technological as well environmental concerns and a

drive towards sustainable transportation, the issue is whether

the presence of innovative modes of local public

transportation like the tricycles are to be encouraged. This

is especially highlighted in the case of the Philippines that

has recently enacted a landmark environmental legislation, the

Clean Air Act of 1999 and has highlighted that one of the

causes of road- based pollution are the tricycles

The tricycle is considered the most important means of

transport here in Surigao. They are the medium of

transportation for many travelers and commuters; with the help

of tricycle it can be easier for us to go to somewhere.

Tricycles are here to stay, at least in the medium term. They

are there because they fulfill the last mile demand of the

Filipino commuter.

The tricycle in every barangay in the Philippines is very

helpful. Another proof of the Filipinos’ remedyo creativity,

the tricycles can be seen in all sorts of terrain,

transporting people and carrying cargo that carrying up to 10

passengers at one go.

Review of Related Literature

In this paper, several studies were mainly examined about

tricycle transportation. Tricycle transportation provides

great help for humans.

Cabanatuan City prides itself as the Tricycle City of the

Philippines (Dayang, 2018). In fact, tricycle operation in

this city is a source of livelihood for around 10,000 families

(Balaria, Pascual, Santos, Ortiz, Gabriel and Mangahas, 2017).

Tricycle transport

Tricycles, which are made by attaching a sidecar to a

motorcycle, are one of the means of public transportation in

the Philippines (Nguyen, 2020). Since tricycle is a three

wheeled vehicle, it is said to be more accident-prone compared

to fourwheeled vehicles, this is also the reason why senior

administration lawmaker in the Philippines are proposing

safety and professional training for drivers and operators of

tricycles (Romero, 2015).

Unfortunately, despite the city claim and arrogance for

being the Tricycle City of the Philippines, many local

tricycle drivers seem hell-bent in making Cabanatuan as the

City of the Most Notoriously Opportunistic and Abusive

Tricycle Drivers in the country (Dayang, 2018).

Needless to say that they are also the number one

violators of traffic rules and many of the tricycle drivers

are becoming a source of stress to other motorists and

travelers. It is a sad reality that many tricycle drivers seem

to think that for the reason that their vehicles are small,

they can blatantly ignore rules—going against traffic on one–

way streets, squeezing between cars, even trucks, and making

turns whenever they feel like it—putting their passengers’ and

their own lives at risk (Bolido, 2014).

Statement of the Problem

Surigao Del Norte, Surigao City, is one of the most

commonly used public transport modes. But this study is not

friendly at all in terms of environmental protection

management. All the passengers using the tricycle

transportation in Surigao Del Norte, Surigao City, are prone

in accident and have difficulties which may lead to injuries.

In terms of the environment there are many factors that can

affect to us when it comes to tricycle those are the energy

consumption, pollution emission, noise pollution and air

pollution. This study will help us in order to aware that not

all things are good, but there are things that can affect to

all the environment and people also. The study will sustain

and developed the tricycle transportation in terms of

environmental management.
Objectives of the Study

This study aims to determine the tricycle transport

industry in Surigao Del Norte, Surigao City. Specifically,

this aims to;

1. Determine the relation to a process of tricycle transport

industry in terms of;

1.1 gasoline

1.2 service

1.3 travelers and commuters

2. Determine the tool of industrial technology in tricycle

transport industry in terms of;

2.1 input

2.2 output

2.3 process
Significance of the Study

The tricycle is one of the most

commonly used public transportation
modes in the Philippines. People from
different social strata use the tricycle
on multiple occasions per day at most.
Due to its popularity, it is important to
create an ergonomic assessment of
different tricycle designs. According
to recent surveys conducted by the
group
itself and from various sources
surrounding the topic, majority of the
commuters complain about the overall
ride
comfort and experience when riding a
tricycle. [1] (See Table 3)Therefore,
the safety and comfort of the
passengers
should be assessed in order to prevent
injuries from prolonged exposure to
awkward postures and cramped
conditions. Recommendations for the
improvement of the tricycle design
would lead to a more comfortable and
safer experience for the passengers

This study in Surigao Del Norte, Surigao City will serve

as a guide to the service providers and policy in terms of

tricycle transport. The tricycle is one of the most commonly

used public transport modes here in the Surigao Del Norte,

Surigao City. People from different social that can use the

tricycle on multiple occasions per day at most. Due to its

popularity, it is important to create a survey questionnaire

in order to know the current problem about the tricycle

transportation and also their safety and comfort of the

passengers should be assessed in order to prevent injuries.

In general the result of the study may serve to improve

of the tricycle transport here in Surigao Del Norte, Surigao

City. It would lead to a more comfortable and safer

experience for the passenger.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study will focus to determine the tool of industrial

technology which is the Inputs, Outputs in a relation to a

process in terms of tricycle transport industry. It will

include the gasoline of the tricycle industry, the services of

the tricycle, and also the travelers/commuters. This study has

a questionnaire in order to determine the tool of industrial

technology.

Chapter 2

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the locale of the study, data

gathering procedure, and data analysis.

Locale of the Study

The study area is located at Surigao City, Province of

Surigao Del Norte. Surigao City is popularly known as

the City of Island Adventures. Positioned at a geographic

coordinates: Latitude: 9°47′20″ N Longitude: 125°29′42″

Surigao City has a 17 panoramic islands with long stretches of

pristine white sand beaches, mystical caves, vast mangrove

forest and under water sceneries and other leisure. The

tricycle transport industry is a fit here in Surigao City,

they are the medium of transportation for many travelers and

commuters; with the help of tricycle it can be easier for us

to go somewhere.

Data Gathering Procedure

This study has a questionnaire for the management in

obtaining how to get the tools of industrial technology. The

Inputs, Outputs, in relation to a process of the tricycle

transport industry in Surigao City. The gasoline, which is the

inputs including the tricycle, while the service is the

outputs and the process are those travelers or going to their

destination. Tricycle drivers play a significant role in the

lives of passengers every day. They are the medium of

transportation for many travelers and commuters; with the help

of tricycle it can be easier for us to go somewhere.
