Topic 6: When choosing a job, the salary is the most important consideration. To what extent
do you agree or disagree?

I would tend to agree with this at first glance. However, when I take into account factors such
as job compatibility – i.e. my physical or technical skill in relation to the job in mind; personal
preferences; working environment; and working hours, the salary seems overshadowed.
The first factor is straight-forward: No matter how well it pays, I can’t get a job that I don’t have
the physical and/or technical skills required. The second factor somewhat relates to the first, as
both are subjective. A high-paying job that absolutely fits my capabilities may sound like a non-
question. But being good at something doesn’t necessarily mean being content with it. If that
job isn’t engaging, tedious or otherwise doesn’t give me a sense of self-accomplishment, it
would quickly turn me off. On a similar note is working environment. Annoying colleagues with
no respect for privacy or unsupportive managers with no constructive criticism are deal-
breakers for me. Last but not least is working hours as it directly affects my scheduling and time
allocation. Making money is important, but managing my personal relationships is even more
so. A round-the-clock job certainly won’t help me achieve a preferable work-life balance.
In conclusion, I would rank salary on the scale from 1 (least important) to 10 (most important)
at 7. The salary is an influential, but not a decisive factor for me.
