PICTURE SHOWING THE BONES OF A CHICKEN WING

Shoulder joint-connects the humerus to the vertebrae. This

joint allows the chicken to flap its wings.

Humerus- is attached to muscle to be used to control

the movement in the upper arm. Has cartilage at the
end to form joints
Radius-is one of the arms that make up the forearm. It
connects to the humerus at the elbow joint
Ulna- the other bone apart of the forearm. The ulna stabilizes
the lower arm with the radius to produce movement
Carpal joint- These joints between the bone increases mobility and
freedom of movement in the hand wing. Know as wrist joint.
Metacarpals- The metacarpals connect the carpal
bones of the wrist with the phalanges
Alula- connects the hand wing and the arm wing

Phalanges- aids in flexibility. Connected to the metacarpal. In

humans these would be the fingers

Elbow joint-contains cartilage to connect the upper

arm(humerus) to the lower (ulna and radius)

1. Name three different functions of the bones shown.

(A) Shoulder joint
- It is a ball and socket joint so it allows for 360 degrees motion
- The joint contains cartilage that holds the bones together
- The joint also has synovial fluid that aids the lubrication that allows better motion
(B) Humerus
- Is attached to muscles that control movement of the upper arm
- Has a ball shape at the end that connects to the shoulder joint to allow a large amount of motion
- Also had cartilage at both ends to attach the bones in order to form a join
(C) Elbow Joint
- It is a hinge joint so it allows the lower arm to move up and down
- It also has cartilage that holds the bones together
- Has ligaments that connect the bones together
(D) Radius
- It forms a joint with the ulna and the radius
- It also forms a joint a joint with the lunate and scaphoid to allow wrist movement
- It allows supination and pronation
(E) Ulna
- The ulna stabilizes the lower arm with the radius to produce movement
- It articulates with the radius to form the distal radio- ulnar joint
- It also articulates and forms a joint with the humerus at the elbow
(F) Carpal Joint
- The individual joints in the bone increases mobility and freedom of movement in the hand wing or the wrist in humans
- It works with muscles for the flexing and the extending of the arm wing in birds or the forearm in humans
- It aids in the proper positioning of the hand wing
(G) Alula
- It joins the hand wing and the arm wing
- It is used for specifically when they want to land where they need slow flight with a high angle
- It also allows the bird to increase lift

(H) Meta Carpals

- Facilitates the muscles, tendons and nerves
- Allow manipulation
- Also forms a joint with the upper part of the hand
(I) Phalangles
- Aids in the flexibility of the whole hand
- Allows fingers to flex
- Allows person to be able to pick things up
2. Similarities between the bones
- The chicken bones are similar because as you can see the radius and the ulna serve the same purpose in humans allowing movement of the
wrist
- The shoulder joint in a human is also a ball and socket that allows freedom of motion
- The chicken bones also have cartilage that allow the bones to be held together and lubricated when moving.
