Instruction: Analyze and solve each problem. Write your final answers on answer sheet provided.

Problem # 1: Three wires supporting the stiff bar ABC is made from the same material. Wire at B has a cross-
sectional area which is equal to half the cross-sectional area of the other two wires. Calculate the axial force
exerted by the three wires. ( 15 pts )

Problem # 2: The composite bar is subjected to a normal force P = 7500 lb as shown in the figure. The section of
the composite bar is composed of two hollow tubes and a solid steel core. Determine the axial stress developed in
each bar. Use Ecu = 18 x 106 psi, Est = 30 x 106 psi, and Ebr = 16 x 106 psi. ( 15 pts )

Problem # 3: The steel bars are firmly attached to rigid supports. Initially the temperature is 840F. Determine the
stress in bars AC and CB when the temperature becomes -600F. Use E = 29 x 106 psi and α = 6.50 x 10-6/ 0F. (
10 pts )
Problem # 4: Three links are used to support load P = 10.25 kips. Disregarding any deformation for horizontal
bar BD, calculate the stress developed in links AB ( A = 0.35 in 2) and EF ( A = 1.15 in2 ). What is the value of
axial strain sustained by link CD? Use E = 29 x 10 6 psi for all the steel links. Assume that link AB is identical to
link CD. ( 15 pts )

Problem # 5: The horizontal member shown in the figure is loaded by 25 kN at E. It is supported by steel
connector AB ( E = 200 GPa, A= 620 mm2 ) and aluminum connector CD ( E = 70 GPa, A = 530 mm 2 ).
Determine the deformation incurred by connectors AB and CD. Also, calculate the vertical displacement of E.
( 15 pts )

Problem # 6: The truss is loaded by two concentrated forces as shown in the figure. Use E = 30 x 10 6 psi and A =
0.60 in2 for all the members. Determine the deformation sustained by members CG, AF, and FG. ( 15 pts )
Problem # 7: A rectangular steel block is 4 inches long in the x direction, 2 inches long in the y direction, and 3
inches long in the z direction. The block is subjected to a triaxial loading of three resultant forces as follows: 72
kips compression in the x direction, 60 kips tension in the y direction, and 56 kips tension in the z direction. If ν
= 1/3 and E = 29 x 106 psi, ( a ) determine the single resultant load in the z direction that would produce the same
deformation in x direction as the original loadings. ( b ) determine the single resultant load in the y direction that
would produce the same deformation in x direction as the original loadings. ( 15 pts )
