Burj Al Arab hotel

Reflection

In this chapter, Burj Al Arab is a luxury hotel type that located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It was
the word's only 7 star hotels since 1999 until 2008. And also it is the fourth tallest hotel in the world.
Burj Al Arab stands on an artificial island which has 280m (920ft) from Jumeirah beach and is
connected to the main land by private curving bridge. The shape of structure is designed to mimic
the sail if a ship.

Burj Al Arab was designed by architect Tom wright of WKk architect. The design and construction
were managed by Canadian engineer Rick Gregory of WS Atkins. Construction of the island began in
1994.It built to resemble the sail of a dhow, the two type of Arabian vessel are "wings and mast”,
wings is a spread in a V to form a vast mast, while the space between they is enclosed in a massive
atrium. This building was made and designer had more control of the form of the site as well as the
building. The building was elevated relatively low on the man-made island because the architect
wanted to provide the illusion that the building was floating right above the sea level, and also the
client wanted a building that would become an Ionic or symbolic. This building is a hybrid V shape
structure constructed in concrete and blended with structural steel. Also there is a concrete core at
the back of the building which forms the base of the V-shape and the trusses are connected to it.
They use concrete blocks worked like sponge to protect on wave that hit the block, and water pass in
side to turn around. The five materials and structure are; Cores connecting the two cores with cross
bracing of fabricated box section and imparting stability. The V shape form of prefabricated concrete
is hold in place with cross brace frame and a gigantic still structure known as exoskeleton and made
of two legs on each side of structure. Façade is the fabric wall stretched between the horizontal
beams. Sky View is a series of steel trusses and 20mm thick plates. The total dead loads is 2850,
000,000lbs, and the live load is 86,160,000lbs then, the total load on foundation is 150,000lbs/SF
and the maximum horizontal wind load is 2,366,000lbs.The trusses act as across bracing to wind and
earth quake forces in lateral load. The shape of Burj Al Arab lowers wind forces more effectively than
a square building because of the stream line V and curved fabric atrium wall. Also the structure
transfer to the vertical loading through the large spine. This is the most direct way for the vertical
loads to reach the ground.

I learned that the legendary hotel of Burj Al Arab constructed in the form of sail is much than simply
a beautiful architectural sight of the city. It is a symbol of modern Dubai and its integral part. All
inhabitants and city visitors are delighted with the building of the hotel. Its construction material
used, architectural style, and design usually location attract tourist from all over the world. And this
kind of project it required a lot of work or a lot of professionals that related to the construction, not
only a combination of the architect that is reflected on the building, it also perspective of what the
clients wanted. Architect and engineers had to work together in order to make the building. When I
watched the video, I have learned and observed that, all Engineers and the Architects, they was
agree in all the decisions that they were going to make, especially by talking about the structure. In
this kind of big project, if I’m Engineer soon I well use this kind of strategy and we need to cooperate
at all times to make a good and successful project.

Agas-agas Bridge

Reflection

As a mighty and impressive structure, the Agas-agas Bridge is an achievement of modern

engineering. Being the highest bridge in the Philippines, it has since been groomed to be venue for
extreme sports as the altitude and the natural setting are ideal for exciting, and environmental-
friendly activities.

Agas-agas Bridge in southern Leyte is the highest bridge ever built in the Philippines. The bridge
straddles between two mountains and Traverses along the mahaplag- sogod (south-central) section
of the maharlika highway. It provides a significant link to motorist traveling from Luzon to Mindanao.
This bridge is by far the tallest pier that the Philippines department of public works and highway
(DPWH) has constructed with a help from Japanese government and our president that time is Gloria
Macapagal Arroyo that leads the unveiling of the marker during the inauguration. It involves the
construction of a 350-linear-meter bridge (1,150ft) and a height of 89 meters (292ft) above the
ground, the center span of the structure measures in 177 meters (581) in length supported by two
piers measuring 73 meters (240ft) and 75 meters (246ft) from the ground with a mix of steel and
concrete.
They constructed in 2006 and they opened in 2009. Agas-agas Bridge is a prestressed concrete beam
bridge that connects the provinces of Leyte and southern Leyte that I said before. Beam bridge, also
known as Stringer Bridge, are the simplest structural forms for bridge spans supported by an
abutment or pier and materials use timber, iron steel. Reinforced concrete and also the prestressed
concrete.

I learned some more, some ideas how to build bridge someday and i will attach this for the future
engineer. And I observed while I'm watching this video is more traditional or beliefs that the long
span bridge usually takes a long time and is risky for inspectors. I know ,there so many challenges
and struggles when it comes to build this bridge, sometimes or more than happened to bridge will
broke but it is depend how the foundation strong. But in this bridge I'm so amaze.

Since it is situated in a mountainous area, it is regularly reported that movements of loose soil or
landslides take place whenever it rains heavily, much more when a typhoon strikes the province. I
great full and thankful for the support of being provided by the Japanese government in our effort to
incorporate technology in improving and preserving structural integrity of our public infrastructure.

More people and tourist visit in this bridge during summer day. I think it’s a good place for those
people needs to relax and people having stress in their lives to feel the air of environment. Especially
to me, I think I want to jump from a height of this bridge because of stress, but it’s a joke sir.
