MULTISTAGE AND MULTILEVEL POWER

ELECTRONIC CONVERTER-BASED POWER SUPPLY

FOR PLASMA DBD DEVICES
INTRODUCTION:

OVER the past few years, dielectric barrier discharge

(DBD) devices have become popular in several industrial sectors
for applications in the generation of ozone gas, gas flow control,
aerodynamic control, light emission for plasma displays, and
CO2 lasers. Among the growing applications of DBD devices
are aeronautical systems, where DBD devices have
demonstrated remarkable capabilities to control the aerodynamic
flow. Several research works have shown a promising potential
for DBD devices to replace hydraulic and/or mechanical parts in
aeronautical systems. The interests in DBD devices for
aeronautical systems have arisen from the fact that a DBD
device can be used to control the boundary layer profiles, and
minimize the turbulence and drag. Moreover, DBD devices have
shown other advantages in such applications, including the low-
power requirements, fast responses, and reduced mechanical
vibrations . The use of DBD devices in aeronautical systems,
especially in flight controllers, faces challenges due to the need
for compact and lightweight high-voltage and high frequency
power supplies that can offer controllable body force or plasma
velocity. Such requirements have introduced challenges in the
design and operation of the required power supplies, where
meeting size and weight constraints can degrade the production
and control of body force and plasma velocity.

EXISTING SYSTEM:
The employment of resonant PECs has offered eliminating
the need for transformers, thus, reducing the size and weight of
power supplies for DBD devices. Resonant PECs have shown
several advantages, including the reduction of voltage stress
across switching elements by allowing soft switching, reduction
of harmonic distortion on the terminals of DBD devices, and
limited levels of EMI . Such advantages have made resonant
PEC’s popular in constructing power supplies for DBD devices
to generate plasma for different applications, including
aeronautical systems. However, resonant PEC’s generally
require complex control schemes (to allow continuous
adjustments of the produced plasma body force), have a narrow
range of output frequencies and do not offer simple adjustments
in their output magnitudes The employment of resonant PECs
has offered eliminating the need for transformers, thus, reducing
the size and weight of power supplies for DBD devices. Such
advantages have made resonant PEC’s popular in constructing
power supplies for DBD devices to generate plasma for different
applications, including aeronautical systems.
DRAWBACKS:
However, resonant PEC’s generally require complex control
schemes (to allow continuous adjustments of the produced
plasma body force), have a narrow range of output frequencies
and do not offer simple adjustments in their output magnitudes.

PROPOSED SYSTEM:
The introduction of multilevel dc–ac PECs has provided a
new avenue for designing power supplies to feed DBD devices,
where the output voltage can be controlled over a wide range of
frequencies . The multilevel dc–ac PEC-based power supplies
have demonstrated good abilities to facilitate adjusting the body
force and plasma velocity, while maintaining the overall system
stability. This paper presents a multilevel dc–ac PEC-based
power supply for feeding DBD devices without the need for
high-frequency transformers.
The developed power supply is constructed for light weight and
compact size, which are key requirements for application in
aeronautical systems. The weight and size constraints are met by
designing the power supply using multistage and multilevel
structure, where multiple dc–dc boost PECs are used to supply
the different levels of a multilevel dc–ac PEC. The output
voltage produced by the multilevel dc– ac PEC feeds the DBD
device.

ADVANTAGES:
 A voltage-source,CHB multilevel dc–ac PEC can be used
to supply a DBD device for generating and adjusting a
plasma body force.
 The use of switch-mode dc–dc boost PECs can further help
in meeting the size and weight requirements for application
in aeronautical systems.
 The use of the multilevel dc–ac PEC can be advantageous
in accommodating reduced switching frequencies, while
producing output voltages with a low harmonic content.
 ability of the developed power supply to produce stable
high voltage at different high frequencies, which are
required for operating DBD devices.

APPLICATIONS:

 Power supply to dielectric barrier discharge devices

 Aero dynamic applications
