Course Description:
This course explains the basic nutritional guidelines throughout the human lifecycle and how
requirements vary at different stages. Different nutritional needs during specific stages,
preconception, pregnancy, infancy, childhood, adulthood, and geriatric are examined.
Physiological changes and nutritional assessment for each population as well as strategies for
attaining optimal nutritional status at each stage are discussed. Obesity throughout the different
stages is examined and some of the most common chronic diseases.
Course Objectives: By the end of the course students will be able to:
1) Describe physiological changes at each stage of life.
2) Differentiate nutritional needs of each population.
3) Select appropriate techniques and strategies for optimizing nutritional status at each
stage.
4) Differentiate factors that influence food choices and behaviors at different stages of the
life cycle.
5) Identify the common nutrition related issues associated with each stage
The final exam is mandatory. If you do not take the final when scheduled you will receive
an ABS. as your grade.
There are no extra credit projects or assignments. PLEASE do not ask!
Your letter grade for the course will be derived from the sum of the total points earned on the
midterm, assignment and final. If you are on the borderline of a letter grade, a final decision to
move forward to the next grade,or back to the previous will be determined based on your
attendance and arrival to class on time. There will be no movement back or forward if the
attendance was average.
Behavioral Expectations
(1) Cell phones are to be shut off or put on vibrate.
(2) If you are absent, You are responsible for making up the notes that you have missed. Please
do not e-mail/text/ask me what you have missed. You must make up what was missed by your
classmates.
(3)Assignments are to be handed in on time. You will not have an opportunity to revise a paper
once handed in. We will carefully go over the directions of the assignment. If you follow the
directions there will be no need for revision. If you do not hand in your assignment by the day of
the final, you will receive a grade of INC. which you must follow up with.
(4) If you are not able to take the midterm exam with the class you must notify me ahead of time
or as soon as possible by e-mail and have a justifiable excuse. I will then decide if and when a
makeup is possible.
(5) No Texting during class.This too is disturbing and shows a lack of regard for the class, the
subject and the instructor.
(6) No taking out or looking at cell phones during an exam. Additionally any conduct during an
exam that appears inappropriate (conversing with other students, holding up exam or looking at
other exams) will have consequences that will affect grade.

NOTE: Course packet should be brought to class daily. Each lecture topic will correspond
to the topic in the packet in the order it is presented.
