Look up the meanings of the following words and phrases that you are going to encounter later on the
selection you are going to read.

PHRASES DEFINITION
1. Take for granted It is where people doesn’t care for you or the other person
that gives him importance or time.
2. Cultural biases Cultural biases is where people idolizes international artist
than our own artist. It is also where people rather do our
country lifestyle or cute than ours.
3. Domestic Workforce This is a illegal way to have work in other country without
any legit or legal papers. We call them TnT.
4. Durable Bond able to exist for a long time without significant deterioration in quality
5. Grossly Disloyal It is something that very unacceptable manner of a person
that is really bad.

That it is hard to communicate with other culture but with proper knowledge and determination to

1. How does each of the items in the following contrasting pairs differ from the other?
a. High-context vs. Low-context
High context is where people observe strictly your body language, facial
expression or your tone. Unlike low context is more in direct communication and
clear.
b. Sequential vs. Synchronic
Sequential is where people on the community or country strictly follows times
and rules, for them time is very Important that it should spend on useless things.
While in synchronic people of this country tends to do their priorities regardless
of time they spend on this thing.
c. Affective vs. Neutral
Affective person is where people do extra or sometimes exaggerated facial
expressions or body language they are carried by their feelings. While in neutral is
where people are very chill and they talk smoothly because they can control their
emotions.
2. What does the author recommend that we do to be successful in cross-cultural
communication?
Understanding each other and respecting different beliefs will be surely always successful
by communicating with others cultures.
3. In what ways can you enhance your ability to communicate with people from diverse
cultures?
By searching to internet what that cultures beliefs and try to apply for my self in time
where I will be visiting other cultures. If it’s funny to do, do not laugh at it and try to
respect them.

PART 2
Write a letter to a non-Filipino who plans to reside in the Philippines someday. In this letter, give
this person some advice about how to communicate with the Filipinos. (20 points)
Hey people. Yes you, I wouldn’t say anything good in Philippines for you to stay. But what we are
going to do when you visit Philippines is to make your visit very unforgettable in good terms. I will show
you around what things we are doing on our daily basis. And will make sure you wouldn’t resist the
beauty of Philippines.
