POSITIVE MATERIAL IDENTIFICATION (PMI)
PROCEDURE

I. Scope
This document describes the requirements for the Positive Material Identification (PMI) of Buckling Pin
Devices and its components
II. Introduction
PMI testing shall be performed at a point in time that ensures proper alloy materials have been used in
the fabrication of an identifiable assembly. Usually, this is before Buckling Pin Devices assembly.
Buckling Pin Valves and its components requiring PMI testing shall be noted on a Purchase Order,
approval drawing or proper specification.
BS&B Safety Systems Customer may choose to have a third-party inspector present at or perform of all
PMI testing
III. Test Equipment
Test equipment or methods used for PMI testing shall be the following types, as applicable:
a) Portable X-Ray Emission Analyzer, also known as X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) analysis with a
calibrated portable instrument.
b) PMI Testing by Optical Emission Spectrometry.
IV. Personnel Qualification
PMI testing shall be performed only by personnel trained in the techniques of material identification of
the test equipment listed on Section III of this document. Training documents shall be provided for
review (PMI operators qualification certificates shall be submitted to demonstrate ability and experience
with the PMI equipment and Testing Procedure)

PROCEDURE

V. TESTING PROCEDURES
The surface to be analyzed shall be clean bare metal, free of grease or oil
Valve components to be PMI tested shall be only list below as required by Customer. Each single Buckling
Pin Device shall be PMI tested.

ITEM DESCRIPTION
1 MAIN BODY
2 PLUG
3 DRIVE END SHAFT
4 FREE END SHAFT
5 SEAL RETAINER RING
6 SHOULDER BOLTS

PMI TESTING BY PORTABLE X-RAY EMISSION ANALYZER

The instruments and methods used for PMI testing shall be suitable for identifying the material by
quantitative measurement of the major alloying elements required in the applicable material
specifications

PMI testing shall be performed in accordance with written operating procedures. Operating procedures
shall ensure PMI testing is performed in accordance with proper method.

Instrument operator shall work to a written procedure and shall have been trained to use the instrument
in accordance with that procedure. Training shall be documented

The person(s) performing PMI testing shall calibrate and/or verify the test equipment performance as
specified by the equipment manufacturer. Calibration shall be carried out on a standard calibration alloy
sample, representative of the base material being tested.
All verified materials with an acceptable analysis shall be marked with proper Part Number and the
letters “AV” (Alloy Verified) using an electric engraver pen or a suitable marker; any other marking
used for identification shall not contain any substances detrimental to the corrosion resistant materials.
All PMI results (“Accepted” or “Rejected”) shall be recorded on a proper Form.
PMI TESTING BY OPTICAL EMISSION SPECTROMETRY
PMI testing by Optical Emission Spectrometry Method shall be performed only when there is a Carbon
content measurement requirement or required by Customer.
PMI testing by Optical Emission Spectrometry Method may be performed by an external Laboratory,
such Laboratory shall be included on BS&B Premco Latinoamerica Approved Vendors List and if
required, approved by BS&B Safety Systems Customer.
PMI requiring Carbon content measurement shall be performed before machining of Buckling Pin
Devices Components and before assembly of Buckling Pin Devices components.
PMI testing shall be performed in accordance with written operating procedures. Operating procedures
shall ensure PMI testing is performed in accordance with proper method.

Instrument operator shall work to a written procedure and shall have been trained to use the instrument
in accordance with that procedure. Training shall be documented

POSITIVE MATERIAL IDENTIFICATION (PMI)
PROCEDURE

The person(s) performing PMI testing shall calibrate and/or verify the test equipment performance as
specified by the equipment manufacturer. Calibration shall be carried out on a standard calibration alloy
sample, representative of the base material being tested.
All verified materials with an acceptable analysis shall be marked with proper Part Number and the
letters “AV” (Alloy Verified) using an electric engraver pen or a suitable marker; any other marking
used for identification shall not contain any substances detrimental to the corrosion resistant materials.
All PMI results (“Accepted” or “Rejected”) shall be recorded on a proper Fo rm.

VI. ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA

- PMI results shall be verified against Customer material requirements or proper Customer material
specification, PMI results shall not be approved if results are not in compliance with Customer
requirements.
- Besides Customer material requirements, all tested materials shall comply with the requirements of
ASTM, ASME Section II and if applicable, Part C.
- If any of the major alloying elements are below material specifications or if the portable analyzer
indicates an incorrect match the component shall be rejected. In case laboratory analysis is required,
the laboratory analysis will determine aceptance or rejection of the material.
- If any of the major alloying elements are above material specifications, the alloy content must be
reported for acceptance or rejection.

VII. NON-CONFORMING RESULTS

If the PMI testing results fall outside the acceptable range, BS&B Safety Systems has the option to
conduct a more accurate analysis to determine the component acceptance such as obtaining a chemical
analysis performed by an independent approved testing laboratory. The alternative test method or
independent laboratory must be accepted by BS&B Safety Systems Customer. The results of the more
accurate test method or independent chemical analysis shall govern.
If any component is found unacceptable, it shall be replaced and PMI shall be conducted on all replaced
components in accordance with this procedure, rejected components are segregated and properly
identified to prevent reuse.

VIII. PMI TEST REPORT

PMI testing results shall be properly recorded on a PMI report form. Report shall indicate for each item
the following information as minimum:
a) BS&B Safety Systems Customer name
b) BS&B Safety Systems Customer PO Number
c) BS&B Safety Systems Customer Valve Tag number
d) BS&B Lot Number
e) BS&B Part Number and description
f) Raw Material Heat Number
g) A statement that the material has been tested in accordance with proper material specification.
h) Date of test
i) PMI test result
j) Name of Technician performing test
k) Identification of PMI equipment used
l) Element range according to material specifications
m) Any other relevant information as applicable.
