For any right triangle,there are six trigonometric ratios . Three common ratios are the sine (sin) ,
cosine (cos),and tangent (tan) ,cosecant (csc), secant (sec),and cotangent (cot) .Below are the formula :

opposite adjacent opposite

sin  cos  tan 
hypotenuse hypotenuse adjacent

1 hypotenuse 1 hypotenuse 1 adjacent

csc   sec   cot  
sin opposite cos adjacent tan opposite
Examples 1: Example 2 :

In the right triangle PQR shown below, find the In triangle ABC, right angled at B, 15sin A = 12.
six trigonometric ratios of the angle θ.
Find the other five trigonometric ratios of the

angle A.

Solution : In the above right angled triangle, note

that for the given angle θ, PQ is the ‘opposite’ opposite
sin( A)  12
side and PR is the ‘adjacent’ side.
15sin A = 12, then  hypotenuse =  15

Then,  If

 By Pythagorean theorem,

opposite PQ 5
sin θ  =  hypotenuse   =    QR   =  13 AC2  =  AB2 + BC2

adjacent PR 12 152  =  AB2 + 122

cos θ  =  hypotenuse  =  QR   =  13

225  =  AB2 + 144

opposite PQ 5 Subtract 144 from each side.

θ  =  adjacent   =  PR   =  12
tan  81  =  AB2
