What should do you do to effectively manage the boss?
ANS:
The primary strategy for managing the boss is to help him be a good boss. In order to do this, there are
4 main tactics: help your boss be a good boss, be a resource, see your boss realistically, and build a
relationship.
In order to help your boss be a good boss, you should initiate discussion of the boss’s goals and needs,
do a good job, ask for advice and assistance, tell the boss what you think, and confront the boss when
necessary.
In order to be a resource, you should tell your boss your strengths and weaknesses, understand your
boss’s pressures, zig where the boss zags, and come up with solutions, not just problems.
To see your boss realistically, you need to give up idealized expectations, not hide anything, not
criticize the boss to others, and disagree occasionally.
To build a relationship, you need to learn to listen, ask for feedback, find things to compliment, and tell
your boss of your accomplishments.
3. Many people are afraid to manage up because they feel they have no power, but this is
not true. An employee’s relationship with his boss is one of mutual dependence. What are the personal
and position sources of power that employees have, and how can they use these sources of power?
ANS:
Personal sources
Knowledge- A subordinate with useful knowledge is a real benefit to the boss. A record of successes
and a history of contributions can gain you expert status.
Effort- By demonstrating a willingness to learn, to accept difficult projects, and to initiate activities
beyond the scope of expected effort, you can increase your power.
Persuasion- Rational persuasion is typically the most effective approach when trying to influence
upward.
Speaking truthfully- Someone willing to speak truthfully to higher-ups will have increased power
Position sources
Flow of information- If a subordinate has a position that is critical to the flow of information, he can
influence the people who need the information.
Central location- A central location provides influence because you become known to many people
and contribute to the work of many.
Network of relationships- With a network of relationships you will have more clout with your boss and
more opportunity to persuade and make significant contributions.
