and English)
5. How did you prepare for your university application? (audition, portfolio, etc.)
Korean and Canadian teaching styles are completely different. Korea’s
teaching style focuses on more skill-basis and pursuing perfectionism, but
Canada’s teaching style is more likely to focus on understanding the concept
of music and how the music has to be expressed.
For me, when I was taking lessons from the Canadian professor, I learned
more about how to deliver my interpretation to the audience rather than
having a perfect technique of playing piano. It was the hardest thing to
completely change the learning and performing style. But it was good to have
more chances to learn both styles. In Canada, I could learn about more
composers and their music style by my professor, beyond what I've learned in
South Korea.
8. Did you face any obstacles before/during/after your study? If so, how did you
overcome the challenges?
As I grew up in South Korea, to learn English as a second language is the
most challenging one. Even though music studies is the subject that uses less
English than the other studies, I needed to continue learning English by using
my extra time. I have a tutor who helped me a lot with my English. For music
studies, I try not to lose my passion, and thought, "This is the only path I could
go. Because I cannot do anything other than playing piano." Also, I was
mentally demotivated. I feel like I'm doing nothing and not improving by myself
compared to my friends in South Korea. Because the Korean lifestyle is rapid
and hectic, whereas the Canadian lifestyle is steady and flexible. But now, not
many people choose their career path based on their major. Most of my
friends are working other than music-related jobs, or just becoming
housewives. I am proud of myself to be a piano teacher and accompanist as I
can use the concepts and strategies that I learned from my music studies.
10. Which moment do you believe that you can show out your potential for the
most?
When I feel like I'm going to give up something, I can show off my potential.
As a Christian, I pray and find a way to deal with my obstacles.
11. Which skills are more important? Practical skills? or Theory skills?
Both are important. I don't think one should be missed.
12. Tell me about your company and which position you are in now.
I teach students in my private lessons, and am a mother/wife and
accompanist.
14. Are there any pros or cons for your job field?
Advantages: It's a flexible schedule when you are working from home(such as
private lessons) and a better option to raise children.
15. What do you need to prepare before applying for this job?
I majored in music and Canada, and learned piano since I was young. Also, I
have continued to teach piano since university.
16. What are the best three soft/hard skills to be in this field?
Soft skills are for understanding and empathizing with children with
compliments. Hard skills are usually studying accompaniment, theory skills,
and practical piano skills.
