SIKA AT WORK 1
PROJECT BACKGROUND
LARGEST AUSTRALIAN
GOVERNMENT FUNDING
COMMITMENT TO A SINGLE ROAD
PROJECT IN QUEENSLAND’S HISTORY.
́́The Toowoomba Second Range Crossing is the largest Australian Government funding commitment to a
single road project in Queensland’s history. The $1.6 billion project is a 41km road bypass route to the north
of Toowoomba. When finished, it will connect the Warrego Highway at Helidon Spa in the east to the Gore
Highway at Athol in the west via Charlton.
́́Approximately 30-metre deep cutting at the top of the Toowoomba Range was the alternative to the tunnel
́́solution planned initially.
́́The Project is being carried out using cut and fill process, whereas controlled blasting has been used for most
hard rocks once all other excavation methods exhausted.
́́Building the 800m long viaduct over the existing rail line is one of the iconic locations of the project.
PROJECT REQUIREMENTS
́́The excavated or blasted face should be sloped back to set an angle to prevent collapse. The critical slopes should be
protected with coloured shotcrete to match the surroundings.
́́The coloured concrete batter wall protection should be used for minimal surface cracking and higher toughness.
́́Concrete should be easily mixed, transported and sprayed into the batter walls without complex procedures.
́́Fibres should be used to reinforce the shotcrete as the installation of steel mesh is problematic in irregular slopes.
́́Rebound wastage should be reduced and faster construction

SIKA SOLUTION
́́SikaFiber PPM 48/19 was proposed as the flexible reinforcement for the shotcrete mix to reduce the incidence of
plastic shrinkage cracking, reduce the rebound wastage and also to achieve higher toughness.
́́The PPM 48/19 and Confiber 51F fibre concrete mixes were supplied with Sika Plastiment BV 35 (water reducer) and
Sika Retarder N (set-retarder) to achieve maximum two hours of travel time for FRC.
́́Sika Confiber 51F was specified by TMR for machine placed barrier kerbs to reduce the incidence of plastic shrinkage
cracking.
́́Concrete slump was maintained around 60mm for shotcrete and 20mm for barrier kerbs.
́́Grade of the concrete was 32-40MPa for barrier kerbs and 32MPa for barrier Kerbs.
́́Concrete was supplied by Boral and fibre has been added to the truck at the batching plant.

SIKA PRODUCT USED:
SIKAFIBER® PPM 48/19
SIKA® CONFIBRE 51F
SIKA® PLASTIMENT BV 35
SIKA® RETARDER N
Over 60,000kg of SikaFiber PPM 48/19 has currently been mixed, placed and
finished so far for this project without a single complaint from engineers,
PROJECT SIZE & OUTCOME contractors or concrete placement team.
Over 14,000 bags of Confiber 51F have been used for Barrier Kerbs and over 100,000
litres of admixtures have been used for the project to date.
