REFLECTION OF FUNCTIONAL NOTIONAL APPROACH LESSON PLAN

Preaparing a lesson plan is tiring process because we have to define our activities, learner’s
level, duration , objectives, etc. Our topic was functional notional approach. Firstly, for
preaparing a presentation, we came together with our group’s member. We tried to choose
appropiate topic for FN approach. We had to decide function and Notion. I think that deciding
function and Notion takes hours because of level and objectives. However, after searching, we
chose function as ‘indicating agreement and disagreement’. Our Notion was ‘opinion’. We
thought that this topic was appropiate for learners with intermediate b1 level. Because we had
to use ppp model for processing the lesson, we divided our lesson plan to presentation,
practice and produce stages. Our aim was to develop speaking, listening and grammar skills
of language. We decided to use images, video clip, role play activity because we wanted to
make our students enjoy and interest.

At the begining of the lesson, we prefered to make an interesting entrance to the topic by
some specific sentences which are related with our topic. Then, for introduction stage, we
showed an ad to interpretation. By this way, i think that learners could use the form of
indicating agreement and disagreement unconsciously. Next, in my opinion, playing a scene
from a real life situation can help our learners to see gammer items in a meaningful context.
That’s why, we played a video. I think that using authentic material is so interesting and
enjoying.

Secondly, for presentation stage, we prefered to display a conversation which includes in the
form of our topic. Thanks to the this activity, i think that our learners can identify the
sentences that express opinions about the situation. Then we expect our learners to say us the
sentences of indicating agreement and disagreement. For me, this helps the students to talk.
For practice stage, we prefered to maket he fill in the blank activity. In my opinion, students
skills of finding coherence and cohesion can be fostered. After that, we made scrambled
sentence activity. I can say that this improves students’ discource coherence. That’s why,
teachers should use this activity for their learners.

Finally, for production stage, we gave some time to our learner for produce their role play
activity. I can say that learners can have a great time and improve their sociolinguistic
competences by the help of role play activity. After that, we finished our lesson by giving
homework.
