Q) Describe some barriers to communication that you personally
experienced as a student of the university.Share the communication
barriers with your teachers, peers and any person serving in your
university.

Communication is the process of sending information through the exchange of

views, feelings, intentions, expectations, thoughts, or rights by talking, writing,
signaling, and by other means between two or more members. The process
requires a sender who encodes information in the form of a message which is
conveyed through a medium to a receiver who then decodes the message and
gives the required response. Effective communication happens when messages
are not deformed during the communication process and communication assists
the purpose for which it was intended or meant. However, when the desired
outcome is not attained, factors that act as barriers need to be explained to
explore why the communication has been ineffective.
Communication barriers in the classroom make it challenging for
students to get the most out of their education. Students with language
difficulties often have difficulty communicating with their teachers and
classmates. Personality variations and peer pressure are major factors that make
classroom interactions quite awkward. Some frequent barriers to effective
communication in the classroom are silence, communication anxiety, gender
difference, listening difficulties, perception limitations, verbal barriers,
emotions, and many other factors. These communication barriers may occur at
any stage in the communication process. Barriers may cause your message to
become disfigure and thus causing confusion and misunderstanding.
As far as me, I also face a lot of communication barriers while talking to
my classmates and teachers which I am discussing under:

Lacking confidence:
I don’t have enough confidence to speak out in the
classroom which comes out as a major barrier in communication. Shyness,
difficulty being outspoken, or low self-worth always hinder me to make others
known my needs and opinions. Also, a lack of information on a particular
opportunity or right can prevent me from expressing my needs openly.
Whenever my teacher asks me to share my views on a particular topic, I just
remain quiet and can’t speak out even though I know the answers and want to
speak. This is a huge hindrance in communication while talking to teachers in
the classroom.

Criticism:
Whenever I gather enough courage to speak out in the classroom i.e
while giving some presentations, I got criticized by the other classmates on my
way of speaking or presenting. This criticism creates a barrier that demoralizes
me to communicate in the classroom. Whenever I get dejected for an action or
behavior, it creates a wrong feeling of disheartening, which refrains me from
interacting with other fellows and teachers.

Stereotyping or generalizing:
The barrier which hinders my communication
with my classmates is gender stereotyping. For instance, a cooking competition
took place in my university on world egg day and most of the participants were
girls. I heard my male classmates imitating us upon being asked by one of our
sirs that why weren’t they participating. Their answer was stereotypical and
impolite in the sense that they had a perception about women that they only
belong to kitchens and cooking is what they have to do all their lives. This is
just an example, there are many other incidents when they hold their
preconceptions about other people and things. Also, assume highly
representative of the whole situation. For these particular reasons, I avoid
communicating with my male fellows resulting in miscommunication.

Lack of attention or interest:

I always deal with this obstacle of diverting my
attention somewhere else during the lecture. I usually diverted in the middle of
the lecture because of a lack of interest due to which I am unable to answer
most of her questions which she asks me during the lecture resulting in
ineffective communication.

Speech difficulties:
Speech disability or the difficulty in understanding
unfamiliar accents as a barrier tops the list of factors that affect effective
communication in the classroom. I can completely understand how different
dialects cause hindrance while listening and communicating. I also faced a
listening hindrance as one of my teachers has a somewhat different accent and
also misses some words in their speech. His oral communication is not clear.
Not only did I feel difficulty comprehending but my other classmates also
faced them. My whole lecture passed in this dilemma and after the lecture over,
I with my friends discuss it with to understand the lecture what we read today.
So this speech or language difficulty causes ineffective communication.

These are some communication barriers that I faced as a student of the

university. The first and crucial part is analyzing these different types of
obstacles that affect learning and teaching. It is quite challenging and
complexing for me to overcome them. But I tried my best to overcome these
barriers while communicating so that I would develop a healthy environment
in the classroom with my teachers, other classmates or any person of the
university.
