Q.No.1 Describe some barriers to effective communication that you personally faced as a
child while interacting with your parents and teachers. (3+3)
Answer:
There are many barriers while communicating which make it ineffective. These
barriers may be physical, emotional, social, physiological, lingual, cultural, and many others.
Following are the barriers to effective communication that I have experienced with parents
and teachers:
I was emotionally disconnected from my parents because they have very tough job
hours. We hardly got some time to sit together. I mostly spend my time with my
siblings. Unintentionally, the fear from my parents started to reside inside me. I was not
frank with them which causes communication barriers between us because I was not
able to convey my feelings to them. I was very reserved and afraid to do a discussion
with them. Thus this emotional dis-attachment proves to be a barrier while
communicating with them.
Another barrier that I faced while communicating with my parents is the generation
gap. Which results in the opposition and differences of the thoughts of my parents and
mine. This causes sometimes many problems. Once I said to them that I wanted to go to
Murree along my college trip. But they opposed according to them, girls could go
anywhere alone without their parents. I tried my best to convince them but in vain.
Most common problem that I faced while communicating is the language difference.
Our biology teacher delivered us a lecture in complete English language. Besides, she
also spoke very fast. So, it was very hard to understand her. I tried my best but until I
would understand something she has completed her lecture. My whole 10th class
passed in this scenario which results in my poor biology result along with my other
fellows too. Thus this language difference is another barrier to effective communication
with teachers as school students are unable to speak the English language fluently.
I face a lot of communication barriers while talking to my classmates and teachers, but
one that has stuck with me over time while talking to the teachers is my lack of
attention towards the lecture. I usually zone out in the middle of the lecture because of
a lack of interest due to which I am unable to answer most of her questions which she
asks me during the lecture resulting in miscommunication.
I was a very shy student till 10th class. I did not have enough confidence to talk in front
of a group of people or a presentation leading to students falling behind. Once our
Chemistry teacher was giving us a lecture on Molarity topic. I could not understand its
one word. I wanted to ask the questions from teachers to make my concepts clear but
because of my low confidence, I could be able toask from them. Our teacher was asking
again and again if there’s is anyone who could not understand, tell me I would explain
to her because this chapter is very important regarding exams. As she said, the same
topic came to the exam and I could be able to attempt this question which led me
towards poor performance. This all happens due to the lack of confidence.
These are some examples of my life when I faced barriers while communicating.
Q.No.2. Compare and contrast linear model with the transactional model of
communication. Which model is better in your view? Justify your answer. (3+3)
Answer:
The comparison between linear and transactional model of communication is as
follow:
Linear model of communication Transactional model of communication
1. In this type of communication, the In this type of communication both the
sender plays a significant role in sender and the receiver plays a significant
communication by putting thoughts and role by putting their collective ideas into
ideas into message and transmit them. same page and discussing the matter on
both sides.
4. In linear model we are left to presume The Transaction Model also includes a
that the receiver either successfully more complete understanding of context.
receives and understands the message or
does not.
8. Linear model always ignore non-verbal Transactional model always keep non-
communication. verbal communication into consideration.
According to my views, the transactional model of communication is better than the linear
model of communication.
Justifications:
Communication is all about giving and take; that the transactional model
provides, unlike the linear model which is just a one-way passage leaving the other person
confused or increases the barriers of communication. In the transactional model, both the
sender and the receiver can justify their thoughts and share their field experiences. The
person involved in the transactional model reacts depending upon its background, cultural
beliefs, attitudes, etc. They can carry out effective communication and transactional analysis
based on their critical thinking by discussing the matter without any delay. For example, the
people who recognize each other will have more effective communication than between
unknown people.
