CCI RESIDENTS' INTERESTING CASE PAPER CONTEST

GUIDELINES 2021

I. OBJECTIVE: To promote interesting case paper writing among OB-


GYN residents-in-training

II. GENERAL RULE: The contest is open to all OB-GYN residents-in-


training from accredited training hospitals of the CCI.

III. SPECIFIC RULES:


1. The subject matter of the scientific paper should be relevant to the science or practice of
obstetrics and gynecology.

2. The paper should not have been published in full in any local or international publication.

3. The paper should not have been presented in a previous CCI (and POGS) interesting case
paper contest.

4. Re-submission of previously submitted papers to the CCI Interesting Case Contest/s of


the previous year/s is discouraged.

4. The principal author MUST BE A RESIDENT-IN-TRAINING. One of the authors MUST BE A


CONSULTANT of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the same institution.

5. If the submission is selected for presentation, the principal author must be the one to
present the paper orally. He/She must be a resident-in-training at the time of presentation.

6. Cash and Certificates of Participation will be awarded to qualifying papers.

IV. MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION


1. Patient identifiers should be removed. Anonymity must be upheld.
2. Inclusion of a copy of a de-identified Patient Informed Consent in the manuscript is
highly encouraged.
3. The manuscript should be written in the English language with American English
spelling.
4. The use of Word and its tool (i.e., Spelling and Grammar Check) is encouraged.
5. The use of Plagiarism Detection Software is highly encouraged.
6. The main document with manuscript text and tables should be prepared in MS Word
(Docx).
7. The manuscript should be double spaced with 3.0 cm margins at the top, bottom,
right, and left margin.
8. All manuscript pages are numbered at the bottom consecutively, beginning with the
abstract as page 1.
9. Neither the author's names nor their affiliations should appear on the manuscript
pages.
10. Authorship should be based on the following criteria (International Committee on
Medical Journal Editors, ICMJE): (1) substantial contributions to conception and
design of the work; AND (2) drafting the work and revising it critically for important
intellectual content; AND agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in
ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work
are appropriately investigated and resolved; AND (4) final approval of the version to
be published.
11. The authors should express all measurements according to International System (SI)
units, with exceptions such as seconds, mmHg, or °C.
12. Only standard abbreviations should be used. Abbreviations should be avoided in the
title of the manuscript. Abbreviations should be spelled out when first used in the
text. For example, extensible markup language (XML) and the use of abbreviations
should be kept to a minimum.
13. Parts of the manuscript:
a. Title page; Abstract (an unstructured abstract with a maximum of 150 words)
with 3-5 keywords for indexing;
b. Introduction;
c. Case Report;
d. Case Discussion (in paragraph form);
e. Summary/Conclusion;
f. References (Vancouver style);
g. Appendix with Tables, Figures, Illustrations (with legend), and Photographs
14. Appendix: If any materials are not enough to be included in the main text, such as
de-identified patient consent, Tables, Figures, etc. should be included here.
15. Supplementary materials: If there are any supplemental materials to help understand
readers or too much data to be included in the main text, they may be placed as
supplementary data. Not only text, audio, or video files, but also data files should be
added here.

17. When quoting from other sources, a reference number should be cited after the
author's name or at the end of the quotation.
V. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
1. The manuscript must be submitted in the following format

a. PDF form (online )

b. Microsoft word format ( online )

c. Item a & b must be in a Virtual File folder. The label must contain:
CCI_IC_title_Date of submission (i.e.,
CCI_IC_Angelmans_Syndrome_Case_Series_022121)

d. One(1) copy of the manuscript in Microsoft word format in USB with a title
label.

2. The author/s, institution and index case's identity should not be mentioned anywhere
in the paper. Noncompliance may be grounds for disqualification of the paper.

3. A hard copy of written certification by the Department Chair of the principal author's
training status at the time of submission AND another page containing the following
information: a) title of the paper, b) name, email, and contact number(s) of the
principal author, c) name, email and contact number(s) of the supervising author, d)
institution of origin of the author(s) in a sealed letter envelope.

4. The USB and the sealed letter envelope must be must be submitted to:

5. Because of the pandemic, online submission of the manuscript will be accepted.


Soft copy submissions must be emailed to : mcdtria@gmail.com;
6. A hard copy of the manuscript will be requested from the participant if a judge
prefers a hard copy. If such is the case, then it must be printed on a 21.0×29.7 cm (A4)
paper bound together in a sliding folder. Scanned photographs should be at least
300 dpi resolution for hard copies.
7. Software for plagiarism may be used for this purpose. Should it be feasible, a
similarity index threshold of 30% will be applied.
8. Failure to comply with the manuscript Rules and Guidelines may be grounds for
automatic disqualification from the contest.
9. Deadline: April 30, 2021

VI. PROCEDURES FOR JUDGING:


1. A panel of three consultants will screen all interesting case papers submitted on or
before the deadline from the institutions in charge of the CCI Interesting Case Paper
Presentation Contest (St. Luke's Medical Center, QC, Valenzuela Medical Center,
Fatima University Medical Center, and Quezon City General Hospital). The
manuscript evaluation's top ten scorers will be chosen as finalists to present at the
Oral Interesting Case Paper Presentation.
