The comparison between classicism, medieval art, renaissance art, mannerism,


baroque, and neoclassicism art styles are that all of them are styles of western classical art
from 600 BC to 1800’s. All these styles encompasses the cultures of Greece and Rome and
endures as the cornerstone of western civilization. In the same way, all of them are
renowned for its harmony, balance, and sense of proportion. In its painting and sculpture, it
employs idealized figures and shapes, and treats its subjects in a non-anecdotal and
emotionally neutral manner. Color is always subordinated to line and composition.

Each art styles are different in a manner that first, classicism started during the
beginning of 600 BC, this is the style found in the ancient Greek and Roman sculptures. It
is an idealist imitation of the beauty and perfection of the human body. In architecture,
classicism is found in the 3 Greek orders (Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian), and the additional 2
Roman orders (Tuscan and Composite), indicated by the designs of columns.

In Medieval Art, the style has religious subjects and applies flat projection. The
church is the patron of art. The art forms are mosaic, stained glass paintings, illuminated
manuscripts and calligraphy. It started during the beginning of 300 AD. While in the
Beginning of 1450 marks the renaissance art style, the revival of ancient Greek and Roman
art discovery and application of perspective applied chiaroscuro and sfumato triangular
composition religious and secular subjects’ patrons of art: the church and wealthy families,
the highest development of art in the western world.

On the other hand, precisely in the beginning of 1520, blooms the mannerism style of
art, this is an alternative style to renaissance art. Representations are stylized with
elongated figures and usually religious subjects. Whereas baroque, in the beginning of 1550,
various subjects presented in highly realistic way. Application of deep chiaroscuro and
dominance of curve lines to suggest motion. Finally on the contrary, is neoclassicism art style
in the beginning of 1700, neoclassicism is a term used to describe artistic trends that are
influenced by the classical art and culture of ancient Greece and Rome which invokes
harmony, clarity, restraint, universality, and idealism. Neoclassicism style is the revival of
renaissance and classical style.
Each and every styles of western classical art varies from genre to genre, and they all came
from different period, time, and era.
