GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS: Read the problems carefully, show the solutions and box the final answers. Strictly
NO CHEATING.
I. Find the molar mass of the following:

1. RbOH . 2H2O (2pts)

2. KAl (SO4)2 . 12H2O (4pts)

3. Na2CO3 (2pts)

4. Cr4 (P2O7)3 (2pts)

II. A. Calculate and find solutions in each problem: (3 pts each)

1. How many moles of CdBr2 are in 39.25 gram sample of CdBr2 ?

2. What is the percent by mass of ethanol in a solution containing 2.3g of ethanol (C2H5OH) dissolved in
10.0g of water?

B. What MASS OF SOLUTE is needed to prepare each of the following solutions? (3 pts each)

3. 1.00 L of 0.350 M K2SO4

4. 125 mL of 0.010 M NaF

5. 200 mL of 0.420 M C6H12O6

C. Calculate the MOLARITY of each of the following solutions: (3 pts each)

6. 5g of NaBr is dissolved in 400ml of solution

7. 1.25 m C6H12O6 aqueous solution with a density of 1.09g/ml

D. Calculate the MOLALITY of each of the following solutions: (3 pts each)

8. If we dissolve 0.75 mol of a solute into 2.50 L of water; the density of water is 1.00 g/ml

9. 1.80 mol KCl in 16.0 mol of H2O

E. Calculate for the NORMALITY: (3 pts)

10. The mass (g) of H2SO4 in 200ml of the 2.5 normal (N) solution.

III. Find the solutions for the following COLLIGATIVE PROPERTIES problems: (5pts each)

1. Heptane, C7H16 and octane, C8H18 form an ideal solution. At 40o C, the vapour pressure of pure heptane is
0.522 atm, and the vapour pressure of pure octane is 0.238 atm. A solution is made of 5.32 g heptane and
8.80 g octane. Calculate the mole fraction of octane in the vapour at the above temperature.

2. A solution consists of 3.88 g benzene, C6H6, and 2.45 g toluene, C6H5CH3. The vapour pressure of pure
benzene at 20 o C is 75 mm Hg and that of toluene at 20 o C is 22 mm Hg. Assume that Raoult’s law holds for
each component of the solution, compute the mole fraction of benzene in the vapour. (molar mass of
benzene= 78.0 g/mole and toluene = 92.0 g/mole.)
