ABSTRAK
Aisyah Dayu Suci. Analisis Konflik pada Sybylla Melvyn dalam Novel
My Brilliant Career Karya Miles Franklin. (Dibawah bimbingan Fathu
Rahman dan A.St. Aldillah Khaerana).

kuat Sybylla Melvyn mengenai feminisme.
Melvyn.

Kata kunci: Brilliant Career, konflik, solusi.

ABSTRACT
Aisyah Dayu Suci. Conflict Analysis in Sybylla Melvyn of Franklin's
Novel My Brilliant Career. (Under the guidance of Fathu Rahman and
A.St.Aldillah Khaerana).

The aims of this study are to analyze the conflict that occurred in the
main character, named Sybylla Melvyn and the solutions to resolve the
conflict. Conflict within the main character divided into internal conflict and
external conflict.
The approach used in this thesis is a structuralism approach in analyzing
conflict. The structuralism approach focuses on the intrinsic elements in the
novel, which are the theme, plot, setting and characters. In conflict analysis,
the writer focuses on the main character who experiences many conflicts in
the story. The aim is to determine the influence of other characters who are
involved in the conflict and also participate in the conflict solved process. The
primary data used in this thesis is the text from the novel My Brilliant Career
by Miles Franklin.
After conducting the analysis, the writer found that the conflict between
Sybylla Melvyn and the people around her was caused by the poverty that hit
Melvyn's family and Sybylla Melvyn's strong stance on feminism. The
solution to the conflict that occurred made Sybylla Melvyn have to give up
her love for the position that Sybylla Melvyn had and felt that she should be
more grateful because she was still surrounded by people who loved Sybylla
Melvyn.

Kata kunci: Brilliant Career, conflict, problem solve.

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Backgrounds

Literature is an overflow or realization of thought and feeling, and the author’s

experiences. In other words, literature is simply another way for the reader to

experience the world around their imagination (Jones, 1968:1). Literature could be

from the human daily life, in every time and situation. It can be assumed that

literatureis the portrait of human life, imaginatively or in accordance with thought

and experiences. In addition, literature is human expression psych. It apply truth

fact; the basic of human feeling such as, fear, anger, disgust, joy, sorrow,

disappointment, etc.

Literary work can be form poetry, novel, or drama. A literary work is called

a masterpiece if it contains a certain meaning, uses a beautiful language, and

presents a best feelings to the readers (Wellek & Warren, 1990: 25). Poetry uses

beautiful words to convey a deep meaning, including metaphore and ironic. Novel

shows us a complicated scenario of life and blow a huge imagination. Then drama

is a life show that presents a live action with a great performance.

In literature, there are two constructive elements, namely external elements

and internal elements. External elements are elements related to conditions outside

the literary work, such as social, economic, political, cultural, and historical

conditions at the time the work was made. The external elements can also be related

to the author's experience and the biography of the author of the work. The intrinsic

elements of a work, they can be categorized into themes, lines, settings, characters,

characterizations, and moral messages ( Nurgiyantoro, 2010: 23-25). In addition,

1
Saad (1966) in Sukada (2013: 62) said that the important elements of fictional

structure of story includes theme, characterization, setting, and narrative point.

By reading a literary work, especially a novel, people may get experience

similarities through the story. As been previously mentioned, novel is one literature

outputs that plays an important role in providing a view to addressing the artisically

imaginative life. One of the problems in human life is called conflict, which

emerges from people’s interaction. Sometimes, the conflict that roled by the

character of the story brought the reader to build imagination, feeling, and emotion

from fiction to reality.

A problem can be interpreted as a conflict due to a gap in thought between

one individual and another or one opinion with another (Nurgiyantoro 2002 : 122).

Conflict also can be categorized into several problems, such as, social conflicts,

conflicts in the family, conflicts with themselves, conflicts with nature, also

conflicts with fate. One of literary works that discussed an interesting conflict is a

novel which written by Miles Franklin entitled My Brilliant Career. This research

emphasizes the conflict within Sybyllia, a women character in this novel. Sybylla

Melvyn is the image of an Australian woman who is strong and struggling with all

the trials she has faced in her life. Sybylla Melvyn's family begins to fall apart since

her father bankruptcy. Her family considersher as a burden to her family, so she is

sent to her grandmother's house. In her grandmother’s house, Sybylla Melvyn meets

a rich young man who then wants to marry her.But Sybylla Melvyn refuses on the

grounds that she wants to become a writer to be able to be independent without the

help of others. Although it is not easy, Sybylla Melvyn is willing to do anything

2
from breeders to caregivers in order to meet her family’s daily needs and reach her

dream.

This novel chosen as a work to be discussed because this novel is inspired by

Miles Franklin’s life. This novel brought a big award to Miles Franklin in young

age even though the novel was previously rejected by several local publishers. The

writer also wants to dig deeper intothe conflicts that experienced by the main

character in the novel and how Sybylla Melvyn's so struggle in facing the conflicts.

1.2 Identification of Problems

After reading My Brilliant Career written by Miles Franklin, the writer has

identified some problems that can be analyzed:

1. Women stereotype that makes a women feel depressed

2. Personality of the main character that change her mindset

3. The struggled of the main character that lead a psychological problem

4. External and internal conflict of the main character

1.3 Scope of the Problem

In analyzing My Brilliant Career novel, the writer limits the discussion into

the conflicts of the main character. The writer sees the conflict that arises from the

environment around her has changed Sybilla’s character. Beside that, the writer

intends to find out the main character's motivation to persist in principle, which

basically at that time women must always obey the rules of society.

1.4 Statement of problem

Based on explanation above, there are two research questions that would be

elaborated by the writer :

3
1. What conflicts do Sybylla Melvyn as the main character experience?

2. How does Sybylla Melvyn to solve the conflicts that she experiences ?

1.5 Objective of Writing

Based on research qusetion, the objectitive of writing are formulation as

follows,

1. To find out the conflict that Sybylla Melvyn experiences.

2. To elaborate how Sybylla Melvyn solve her conflicts.

1.6 Significant of the study

In this study, the writer expects to provide theoretical and practical

significance. Theoretically, this study is expected to bring any benefits for the writer

and readers who study literary works particularly character’s conflict in literary

works. It is also expected to make a contribution to enrich the understanding to the

literary matter.

1.7 Sequence of the Study

This Research consists of five chapters. The chapters areorganized as follows:

1. The first chapter consists of background of research, which contains

several explanations of the reasons in choosing the novel and the title of

the research, identification of problem, statement of problem, the

objectives of problem, significance of writing, and the sequence of writing.

2. The second chapter presents the previous related studies of the research,

theoretical background which consist of the previous related studies and

theoretical background.

4
3. The third chapter involves the reserach methodology, which consists of

research methodology, data sources, method of collecting data, and

method of analysing data.

4. Chapter four is that the data analysis elaborated in findings and

discussions.

5. Chapter five is the last chapter which concludes the whole analysis and

provides suggestion for further research.

CHAPTER 2
LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 Pevious Study

Previous study is used to know that the other studies that related or relevant

with this research. The writer has found some thesis that related with conflict

analysis. The studies conducted by Angelika Arif Margiharjo, dkk (2016), Maryana

Bulu (2018), and Helda Ari Kurniawan (2019).

Angelika Arif Margiraharjodkk (2016) on their journal aims to explained that

the internal and external conflict also psychological aspects on a novel “The Fault

in Our Star” by John Green. The data was taken by a documenter like a novel and

author biography and other literature review. the writer of this research used a

conflict teory by Kenney (1966) and character analysis theory by Bernhardt (1953).

The Fault in our Star is a story that a sixteen-year-old cancer patient named Hazel

Grace Lancaster, who is forced by her parents to attend a support group where she

subsequently meets and falls in love with the seventeen-year-old, Augustus Waters,

an ex-basketball player and amputee. This research conclude that problem need a

good conflict manajement to solved.

Second is Maryana Bulu (2018) her study aims todescribe the types of

conflicts of the main characters in short stories by Edgar Allan Poe and describe the

effects of conflicts of the main characters in short stories by Edgar Allan Poe.This

thesis explained that types of conflicts of the main characters in short stories by

Edgar Allan Poe also describe the effects of conflicts of the main characters in short

stories by Edgar Allan Poe. Maryana Bulu used theory by Nurgiyantoro (2002)

6
which separated the conflicts with two types, internal conflict and external conflict.

She divides the external conflict into social conflictand physical conflict. The short

story were choosen are The Tell-Tale Heart (2017), The Black Cat (2017), and The

Hop Frog (1849). Then, the details of the results on the affects experienced by the

main characters areenjoyment or joy, interest or excitement, and surprise or startle,

anger or range, disgust, distress or anguish, fear or terror, and shame or humiliation.

The last is Helda Ari Kurniawan’s study (2019) that internal conflict and

ambition in the novel The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. This study aims to

describe Amir's character and Amir's life, his mistakes against Hassan, and

ambition to make up for all his mistakes with Hasan in the novel. Internal conflicts

are evaluations that contain both positive and negative feeling that objects. From

the data analysis, the result shows that the main character’s psyche can be explained

by using psychological model by Sigmund Freud called tripartite model which

consists of id, ego and superego. The results of the study show that Amir is one of

the main characters in the novel who has a developing character.

In terms of the object research, the differences between the studies above with

this research is the method of analysis and the literary work that used, which in this

study the writer analyzees the conflict within the main character in the novel using

structural approach and conflict analysis. In other words, the previous studies

focused use a different conflict in their research. Otherwise, the writer more focus

in character analysis.

The similiarity of this study and the previous studies mentioned above is the

theme of the study. This study and the previous studies analyze the conflict in the

7
novels, but the novel that is studied in this undergraduate thesis is different from

the previous studies. This study takes Frasnklin’s My Brilliant Careeras the object

of study.

2.2 Structuralism approach

Saussure (1959) in ( Carol 2006 : 14) Given the wide range of meanings

which the term ‘structuralism’ it is originally received in the course of the 20th

century, a clear-cut definition of linguistic structuralism is problematic. Strictly

speaking, it refers to a set of general principles shared by prominent European

linguists of the inter-war period who were all deeply influenced by Ferdinand de

Saussure’s Course de Linguistique Générale. In reference to an emerging new

method that was being used at the time in linguistics, as well as other disciplines

such as literary studies, psychology, sociology, and anthropology.

The structuralism of thought developed by the French anthropologist Claude

Lévi-Strauss, in which cultures, viewed as systems, are analyzed in terms of the

structural relations among their elements. According to Lévi-Strauss’stheories,

universal patterns in cultural systems are products of the invariant structure of the

human mind. Structure, for Lévi-Strauss, referred exclusively to mental structure,

although he found evidence of such structure in his far-ranging analyses of

kinship, patterns in mythology, art, religion, ritual, and culinary traditions.

In analyzing kinship terminology and kinship systems, the accomplishment

that first brought him to preeminence in anthropology, Lévi-Strauss suggested that

the elementary structure or unit of kinship, on which all systems are built is a set of

four types of organically linked relationships: brother/sister, husband/wife,

8
father/son, and mothers brother/sister’s son. Lévi-Strauss stressed that the emphasis

in structural analysis of kinship must be on human consciousness, not on objective

ties of descent or consanguinity. (Britanica Ensiclopedia, 2014). The basic

Structuralism approach is an approach which focuses on the intrinsict elements of

literary works. Furthermore, the author just focuses on how the novel is built by

using the intrinsic elements and the facts of story analysis. According to Teeuw

(1984:135), structuralism approach tries to describe the function of each element of

literary work as structural unity that produced a comprehensive meaning.

Literary works have several intrinsic elements called as the structure of story

text such as character, plot, setting, and theme. Wellek and Warren (1949:140)

explain structural approach, consists of material and structure of the text of the

literary works. It can be said that the structure of literary works is composed by

form and content. The form is the way of the author writes, while content is the idea

that an author expression in writing.

Tyson (2006:210) states that, in literature structuralism has very important

implications. Applying structuralism does not mean to judge whether a literature

work is good or not; structuralism means to discover the underlying principles that

govern their composition short. Structural approach focuses on the intrinsic

elements of the literary works as the center assessment and attempt to understand

the meaning of literature.

9
Based on structuralism approach by Tyson, the author only focuses to the

intrinsic element of the novel which consist with character, plot, setting, and theme.

In this research, the author specially focuses on the main character’s conflict that

faced by the Sybylla Melvyn character.

A. Plot

According to Wellek ( 1948: 224-225), plot is the narrative structure of play,

tale, or novel. The plot (or narrative structure) is composed of smaller narrative

structures (episodes, incidents), and it customary to speak of all plots as involving

conflicts (man against natures, man against other man, or man fighting with

himself).

Events that are sequenced and construct a story is called plot. The plot

explained that is a series of events that take place in a work of fiction (Alexander

2019). Stanton (2007: 26), explains that the plot is a series of events that are

interconnected and cause an impact on literary works.

According to Perrine (1993: 41), the plot is the sequence of events or events

which the story is composed and it may conclude what the character says or thinks,

as well as what he does, but it leaves out a description and an analysis and

concentrates ordinarily on major happening.

Plot is the movement structure in fiction. Fiction must move from the

beginning through the middle to the ending, which in literature is known as

exposition, complication, climax and denouement (Sujiman, 1988:27). Plot is one

of intrinsic element of fiction. The other elements are character, setting, incident,

point of view, etc. These intrinsic elements are related to each other. So that, when

10
describing and analysis plot, the analysis is also connected to other relevant

elements.

Plot is the sequence of events that connected with the law of cause and effect.

Could be said that the plot is the storyline of literary work. The most important

thing is to express the thoughts in the form of problems, opinions, and messages.

Besides its main function to express thoughts, plot has another function, which is

capturing, guiding, and directing the attention of the audience or reader to be

interested in the story.

Plot can be named as a way of the story. Plot is a basic frame of the story. The

components of a plot contain exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and

resolution (Tasyrik, 2019:18). According to Sujiman (1988), exposition is the

condition at the beginning of the story whenthe setting is identified. The exciting

force or initial conflict is introduced. The next component of plot is Rising Action

as the series of events, conflicts, and crises in the story that lead up to the climax,

providing the progressive intensity, and complicates the conflict. Next is climax.

Climax is the turning point of the story. A crucial event takes place and from this

point forward. Sometimes, when climax, protagonist will in the lower side and try

to find the preblem solved for their self. The event may be either an action or a

mental decision that the protagonist makes. Falling Action is the events occurring

from the time of the climax to the end of the story. The main character may

encounter more conflicts in this part of the story, but the end is inevitable.

Resolution is the tying up of loose ends and all of the threads in the story. The end

11
of a story could happen in three ways, they are happy ending, unhappy ending, or

twisted ending.

B. Characterization

According to Nurgiyantoro (2002: 164), characters are displayed in the story,

or players in the fictional story, in the form of humans, animals, trees, or other

beings. Character is an important element that build the literature. Without character

the story cannot be told. Character in a literary work could be an animal, people,

plant, or any noun. As long as the character can speech, tought, or act in a literature.

Character can be categorized into several naming types at once.

Based on Stanton (2007:35), characters aredivided into main and minor

character. Main character is the center of the story because the main character

dominatesa story and has an important role in the story. Sometimes, the main

character appears in most part of the story. Although main character dominates the

story in literary works, the main character also needs another character as minor

character. Minor character has a role to create situation and provoke conflict

happened to the main character. Usually, minor character is only present in some

parts of the story and appears if the role is related to the main character. The second

category of character is a protagonist and antagonist character. Quite similar with

main character, protagonist character is the central person of the story. Protagonists

always have a problem that must be solved. Otherwise, antagonist character is a

contra character of protagonist. Antagonist always make a problem for protagonist

and sometimes appear around the antagonist. Based on Hynes (2014:38), characters

are also divided into dynamic and static character. Dynamic character is

12
character who change from the begining of story until the end. Its is usually called

a role or central character. On the other hand, a static character is a character who

does not change over time. The personality does not evolve or change. Similiar to

dynamic and static character, there is round and flat character. Round character

always imagines as a complicated character or personality. A flat character is the

opposite of a round character. That are of personality trait or characteristic.

Character and characterization are a unity that build each other of someone

who appears as a character story. Characterization is a tool to help readers to know

the characters. Characterization is a name for the methods an author uses to reveal

a character’s values, feelings, goals, or other.

C. Setting

Setting is the information that the space, time and atmosphere of events in a

literary work that can affect the situation. There are two elements of the setting are

interrelated and interact with each other (Nurgiyantoro, 2010: 227-234). The setting

of a narrative or dramatic work is the general locale, historical time, and a social

circumstance in which its action occurs; the setting of an episode or scene within a

work is the particular physical location in which it takes place (Abrams, 1988:172).

1. Setting of Place

Setting of place usually leads to the location of events that are told in a

work of fiction. Place that exist in real life but there are also places that are

not in real world but the place is created in the story. Setting of place is also

usually explained in detail but there is also place that is only mentioned name.

That is because the place is less affect the development of plot and character.

13
2. Setting of time

Setting of time is the time when the story in the literary work happened.

Typically, the time is associated with a factual time or the time related with a

story. The connection between time and historical events can make the reader

more interested and feel the atmosphere at a certain time. In some literary

works, setting of time seems vague and is not show clearly.

D. Theme

According to Sujiman (1988) Theme is main point that build the story. Theme

are basic ideas and have a dominant position that can unite the element in a literary

work. The existence of the theme is depending on the various other element in the

literary works. Thats why they build together. It was in the cause of the theme,

which in fact only in the form or meaning of the general basic idea of story, cannot

be presented without uncertainty of the form that holds it. Theme can be identified

by the conflict that happen in the story.

2.3 Definition of Conflict

There are some definitions about conflict but actually they have same

meaning and purpose. Conflict is one universal case that usually happens in

theworld and it much aspect that should be to influence for example in

environmentas human interaction in society. Another opinion about conflict

(Kenney, 1996:19) stated, a story may deal with a conflict within a single man, a

single man, aconflict between man, a conflict between man and society, a conflict

between manand natural.

14
Conflict is a chaos, a clash, a problems, or any struggle that faced by human.

In literature, conflict is the central issue and makes the story move. Conflictin

literature is a part of intrinsic elements. Conflict could be a theme or a plot as

situation. Short stories have one conflict, while novels have many. It other words,

novel have a more complicated conflict for the whole story.

Conflict is viewed as natural due to life’s uncertainty. Conflict is good and

necessary because conflict can stimulate innovative thinking when it is managed

in the right way. Lacking conflict, thoughts and actions are performed because

they are habitual. Conflict allows an examination of the necessity of these

thoughts and actions. The third assumption points out that people find it easier to

live with unresolved misunderstanding than facing the fact that fundamental

differences do exist, they demand recognition and appropriate management (Deetz

& Stevenson, 1986).

In longer stories, there could be several conflicts. Conflict adds excitement

and suspense to a story. The conflict usually becomes clear to the beginning of a

story. As the plot unfolds, the reader starts to wonder what will happen next and

how the characters will handle the situation. Many readers enjoy trying to predict

the final outcome. The excitement usually builds to a high point, or climax. The

climax is the turning point of the story. Something has happened to resolve the

conflict. From the explanation above it can take conclusion that conflict mostly is

caused by the different opinions, limited skills, unfulfilled desires, dissatisfaction

and frustration. Conflict is one of the important elements of novel.

Without conflict, the story will be flat and will be less interesting. Based on

15
the conflict people can learn about life and it will grow their maturity when she or

he can solve the conflict

Based on (Nurgiyantoro,2010:124) conflict in literay works includes internal

conflict, also called man versus self-conflict, and external conflict which includes

man versus man, man versus nature, man versus society and man versus fate. The

way conflict is used and how the conflicts are resolved are all determined by the

type of story being told.

Kenney states that sorts of conflict during a novel are divided into two

categories; external conflict and internal conflict.

A. Internal conflict

Internal conflict is the conflict that happens in fighting together with his

conscience or words to affect the guts of this conflict arises it soul. In forces

in one's inner conflict, courage against fear, honesty against generosity against

avarice then forth Internal conflict is that the source of serious character

growth. The character must fight his or her own demons and either win

(resulting during a change) or lose (resulting in no change). Every character

has an indoor life.

B. External conflict

The main character fights against something or struggles to beat

something outside of him self. External. The conflict appears due to suspense

emotion and problem. Besides, conflict occurs between the characters of story

with something outside of him perhaps with environment or other character.

16
External conflict deal with: person-against-person, Person-against-society,

Person-against-nature.

1. Person-against-person

Someone is fighting against another citizenry because there's a dispute

both of them.

2. Person-against-society

Is a fighting against another person or against the environment or some

community because there's a difference of business

3. Person-against-nature

It is a struggle which administered a person's figure or individually or

together against the forces of nature that threaten human life its self.

The external conflict provides plot and moves the story forward, additionally

to solving the conflict (finding the killer), the external conflict offers a chance for

the protagonist to find out something they have to understand to resolve the conflict.

In other words, conflicts are that the most vital element within the novel,

because the story won't be interesting without presenting conflict. The writer

concludes that conflict happen due to an unsatisfied factor of that can't be achieved.

CHAPTER 3
METHODOLOGY
3.1 Research Design

Research design is all strategy that used to integrate the difference of the study

in a logical way. In this research, use a methodology. Methodology is a scientific

knowledge that lead between theory and analysis. There are two methodological

design, qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative method is a method used to find the

deep meaning of the problem. The aim from this method to understand broadly and

deeply that a problem in detail on a problem being studied. In other hand,

quantitative method is a method more emphasis on numbers to make more detail.

The writer use a qualitative method as a way to analyze My Brilliant Career

by Miles Franklin. Qualitative research is more subjective because it is only done

by writers and related to search some samples to gain the result. With this method,

the writer can identify the conflict that the main character faced.

3.2 DataSources

Data sources is data that is collected based on previous studies that have a

relationship with the issues discussed by the writer. This data is used as a reference

and theoretical basis to help solve and answer problems that arise. In order to

collecting data the writergathered the data from many sources, such as from related

thesis, books, articles, and journal. The data can be divided into two categories:

Primary of data and secondaryof data.

Primary data were obtained from Miles Franklin novel My Brilliant Career.

This book edition was published in 2019 and has 456 pages. The writer reads the

novel several time and also watching several clips of the movie to learn more that

18
the main character and her problems. The secondary data are obtained from articles,

journal, thesis, and internet. Secondary data are any sources that related in analyzing

the topic of this study.

3.3 Research Procedures

In order to process the analysis, the reseacher applies certain procedures

toarrange this thesis as follows:

1. Reading the novel My Brillian Careerby Miles Franklin several times to

collect primary data

2. Identifying the main characters in the novel

3. Identifying and classifying the conflict problem inside the novel

4. Collecting the secondary data, including texts, thesis and some others

sources.

5. Collecting data in the form of paragraphs, sentences, or words

encountered in the novel as well as related theories found in books,

journals, and other reference which relate to the object of the research

6. Writing the result of analysis using Structuralism approach and definition

of confict.

7. Drawing conclusion as result over the research of this analysis.

19
CHAPTER 4
ANALYSIS

In this fourth chapter, the writer analyzes and elaborates the results of analysis

into intrinsic elements and the conflict that experienced by the main character and

how the main character solves the conflict.

4.1 Intrinsic Elements

In analyzing the literary work, the writer uses structuralism approach and

divides the intrinsic elements into several parts as in plot, character, settings and

theme.

A. Plot

1. Exposition

At the beginning of the novel's, is described the life of a brave and happy little

Sybylla Melvyn in a beautiful village called Bruggabrong. Accompanying her

father to walk twelve miles away to look for salt and it becomes a special

entertainment for Sybylla Melvyn to be able to enjoy the beauty of nature by picking

flowers, inhaling the aroma of pine fruit, passing through ravines, surrounded by

forests of rubber trees and small rivers where the water is very clear . That is kind

of a perfect life for little Sybylla Melvyn in her memories. Sybylla Melvyn is a

sweet little girl that has a close relation with her father which stated in the quotation

that:

“In all probability it was the burning of my fingers which so indelibly

impressed the incident on my infantile mind. My father was accustomed
totake me with him, but that is the only jaunt at that date which I remember,
and that is all I remember of it. We were twelve miles from home, but how
we reached there I do not know“ (Franklin, 2019: 4-5).

20
The quotes tells how Sybylla Melvyn got a love and affection from her lovely

father and how Sybylla Melvyn always accompanied him for deposit salt. In all

probability that was the burning of Sybylla Melvyn’s mind which so indelibly

impressedd on her life.

2. Rising Action

When Sybylla Melvyn was almost nine years old, Sybylla Melvyn's father

suddenly thought of making their life more developed by moving from where they

had been. Even though Mrs. Melvyn had prevented him, but her father managed to

convince them to move. In the novel ( Franklin, 2019 : 8 ), stated that when Sybylla

Melvyn nearly nine her father conceived the idea that he was wasting his talents by

keeping his family rolled up in the small place like Bruggabromg and Bin Bin

Stations . Therefore, he determined to take up his residence in a locality where he

would have more scope for his ability. When giving his reason for moving to my

mother, he put the matter before her thus: The price of cattle and horses had fallen

so of late years that it was impossible to make much of a living by breeding them.

From the quotation above, we know that Sybylla Melvyn's father’s decision

to move was a big mistake. They will not have time to return what they have even

to feed the cattle because at that time summer causes the price of livestock to drop

dramatically while they only rely on livestock to survive.

Her father still felt that what he had done was right. Based on the business

experiences he had and his belief in what he knew that stocks, he participated in

several auctions to expand his wealth. With her Father confidence, he wanted to try.

Which is stated in the following quotation :

21
“A man of his intelligence, coupled with his wonderful experience among
stock, would, they averred, make a name and fortune for himself dealing or
auctioneering if he only liked to try. Richard Melvyn began to think so too,
and desired to try. He did try. He gave up Bruggabrong, Bin Bin East and Bin
Bin West, bought PossumGully, a small farm of one thousand acres, and
brought us all to live near Goulburn. Here we arrived one autumn afternoon.
Father, mother, andchildren packed in the buggy, myself, and the one servant-
girl, who had accompanied us, on horseback” (Franklin, 2019: 8-9).

Their family was slowly going bankrupt. They were forced to exchange all

the assets they owned to be replaced with 1000 hectares of barren dry land which

was very incomparable to what they had before. The first thing that came to Sybylla

Melvyn's mind was the disappointment and feeling of the monotonous life she was

going to live. The move was a sadness that made Sybylla Melvyn cry until she felt

asleep. She really hopes that she can still return to her old life in Bruggabrong. As

worried as Sybylla Melvyn, Mrs. Melvyn felt that her husband would find it

difficult to make a living in such an area even though he had so much to plan that

he could sell Possum Gully back

3. Climax

The climax begins when Sybylla Melvyn's father once again tries his luck in

stocks. He entrusted the Possum Gully with their only property they had to the

bishop of a church to start life as a dairy farmer and butter maker. Sybylla Melvyn's

father was also an honest person, so he was easily fooled by those around him.

Unfortunately, within four or five years the stock price had fallen again, making

them losing hope once again. Father stressed out. He began to gamble frequently

and became addicted to drunk while his mother grew emaciated and lost her

gentleness. It describes in tne novel (Franklin, 2019: 15-16) that he need not

necessarily be downright unscrupulous, but if he wishes toprofit he must not be

22
overburdened with niceties in the point of honour. That is where Richard Melvyn

fell through. He was crippled with too many Utopian ideas of honesty, and was too

soft ever to come off anything butsecond-best in a deal. He might as well have

attempted to make his fortuneby scraping a fiddle up and down Auburn Street,

Goulburn. His dealing career was short and merry. His vanity to be considered a

socialistic fellow, who was as ready to take a glass with a swaggie as a swell, and

the lavish shouting which this principle incurred, made great inroads on his means.

When he losing money every time he sold a beast, wasting stamps galore on

lettersto endless auctioneers, frequently remaining in town half a week at astretch,

and being hail-fellow to all the spongers to be found on the trail ofsuch as he,

quickly left him on the verge of bankruptcy.

For a couple years they was in Possum Gully, the problems then grew. Many

of the livestock owned by Melvyn’s family ended up dying from drought and a

shortage of green grass. The bishop they had deposited the money had fled. Until

the interest payments are taken away. Their belongings then began to be

confiscated. Even though they have sufficient evidence, their family does not have

enough funds to win in court. In the novel (Franklin, 2019: 29), However, with a

little help from more fortunate relatives, and with the money obtained from the sale

of the cowhides and Sybylla Melvyn’s mother poultry, they managed to pay the

interest on the money borrowed from the bishop, and keep bread in their mouths.

Unfortunately for them, at theat time the bishop's agent proved a scoundrel and

absconded. Her father held receipts to show that to this agent he had regularly paid

the interest of the money borrowed.

23
Melvyn's family going stricken with poverty and when Sybylla Melvyn's

parents are no longer able to accommodate Sybylla Melvyn and feel that Sybylla

Melvyn will only be a burden in the family. Sybylla Melvyn then proposed by her

mother to come to her grandmother's house so that their family's load is slightly

lighter. But at that time, the nearly sixteen year old Sybylla Melvyn refused. An

argument then ensues which in the end Sybylla Melvyn accepts that she has to leave

home to find work. The quotation below is a conversation between Sybylla Melvyn

and her mother: It describes in ten novel (Franklin,2019 : 30-31) that when Sybylla

Melvyn’s mother want to talk with her, and said that Sybylla Melvyn need to go

out from the house looking for any job and help her father who cannot finance them

anymore. Sybylla Melvyn was denial that she still too young for go out from home.

Sybylla Melvyn think that every children whom go far from the family will have a

different character. It make Sybylla Melvyn and her mother debated. Sybylla

Melvyn said that their relations to each give a little towards setting us up again, than

to be burdened with the whole responsibility of rearing a child and Sybylla Melvyn

sure they had much prefer it.

After that Granny sent a letter for Sybylla Melvyn’s mother, as stated in the

following quotation:

“My dear daughter,

Lucy,
Only a short letter this time. I am pressed for time, as four or five strangers
have just come and asked to stay for the night, and as one of the girls is away,
I have to get them beds. I am writing that Sybylla Melvyn. I am truly grievedto
hear she is such a source of grief and annoyance to you. The girl mustsurely
be ill or she would never act as you describe. She is young yet, andmay settle
down better by and by. We can only entrust her to the good Godwho is ever
near. Send her up to me as soon as you can. I will pay allexpenses. The change
will do her good, and if her conduct improves, I willkeep her as long as you

24
like. She is young to mention in regard to marriage, but in another year, she
will be as old as I was when I married, and it might be the makings of her if
she married early. At any rate she will be better away from Possum Gully,
now that she is growing into womanhood, or she may be in danger of forming
ties beneath her. She might do something good for herself up here: not that I
would ever be a matchmaker in the least degree, but Gertie will soon be
coming on, and Sybylla Melvyn, being so very plain, will need all the time
she can get.
Your loving mother,
L. Bossier” (Franklin,2019: 36-37)

Then a letter from Sybylla Melvyn's grannie was sent telling her how worried

she was that her daughter. Previously, Mrs. Melvyn had also sent a letter to Sybylla

Melvyn's grandmother that how Sybylla Melvyn's behavior made her mother feel

burdened. So that the grandmother agreed to send Sybylla Melvyn to Caddagat and

would be taught how to behave like a good adult woman and as much as possible

to immediately find Sybylla Melvyn a mate.

What bothered Sybylla Melvyn is how her own mother said bad things that

her to her grandmother whom she loved, as well as to neighbors that how much her

mother was suffering because of Sybylla Melvyn. Another thing that the marriage

described by her grandmother was just as disturbing for Sybylla Melvyn. She has

absolutely not interest in marriage. In fact, she felt that she was not so valuable to

be juxtaposed with other people. She felt ugly, and bad. She does not like marriage

because she thinks marriage is the first step before women are tied up. Her freedom

was taken over in the hands of her husband. Again, Sybylla Melvyn's heart became

slices by that fact.

Now Sybylla Melvyn in her Grannie’s house. When Sybylla Melvyn has

begun to enjoy what she has been unable to do at home, and Everard Gray's which

Grannie’s adopted son, decides to bring Sybylla Melvyn to Sydney to study thatart,

25
her grandmother forbids her. Her grandmother thought Sybylla Melvyn's hobby of

singing was very dishonorable for a woman, Grannie think the idea of becoming an

actress saw as a lowly job. She would rather make Sybylla Melvyn a nun more than

drained her talents to be an actress. Her grandmother believes, what God wanted a

women is to be good to take care of the house and the children. Not even destroying

theirself with what is called a career. Sybylla Melvyn's first troubles at her

grandmother's house had started. Her grandmother, who was never mad

immidiately get angered with the idea of a career began to be discussed.

Meanwhile, Mr Hawden, which the trusted Jackeroo of her Grandmother,

suddenly have a feeling from Sybylla Melvyn. Once again Sybylla Melvyn faced

the problem in Granny house with sarcastic. She did not want have any relation

with the men especially marriage. Sybylla Melvyn said to Mr. Hawden that she

disgust with a love. The next problem came up when Sybylla Melvyn refused Mr.

Hawden and he got anger. As said in the following quotation:

“Miss Melvyn," he began, when we were left alone, I want to apologize toyou.
I had no right to plague you, but it all comes of the way I love you. Afellow
gets jealous at the least little thing, you know."
"Bore me with no more such trash," I said, turning away in disgust.
"But, Miss Sybylla Melvyn, what am I to do with it?"
"Do with what?"
"My love."
"Love!" I retorted scornfully. "There is no such thing."
"But there is, and I have found it."
"Well, you stick to it—that's my advice to you. It will be a treasure.
If yousend it to my father he will get it bottled up and put it in the Goulburn
museum. He has sent several things there already."
"Don't make such a game of a poor devil. You know I can't do that."
"Bag it up, then; put a big stone to make it sink, and pitch it in the river."
"You'll rue this," he said savagely.
"I may or may not," I sang over my shoulder as I departed” (Franklin,2019:
79)

26
From the quotation above Sybylla Melvyn rudely refused Mr. Hawden. She

doesn't want to get involved in a love affair with anyone not even Everard Grey.

But Frank Hawden who felt insulted said that Sybylla Melvyn would rued what she

said to Hawden.

Not long after that, Sybylla Melvyn's grandmother asked Sybylla Melvyn to

meet her again. Then she said that Frank Hawden had asked permission to marry

Sybylla Melvyn. Her grandmother also confirmed this. Sybylla Melvyn is still

trying to refuse, she says that Frank Hawden is not old enough to marry. But her

grandmother said that Hawden was old enough just like her grandfather was when

he married her grandmother. Grannie believes that when Sybylla Melvyn going to

20th years old in the next three years she will be ready. She will be happy with

Hawden because Hawden was well-established, has good character, and is healthy

to be able do any job. Her grandmother's trust in Hawden disgusted Sybylla Melvyn.

Her grandmother did not know yet Hawden's bad attitude. Her grandmother even

thought that if Sybylla Melvyn really cared that her grandmother then she would

obey her grandmother's suggest.

Further said in the quotation (Franklin, 2019 : 84-85) that Sybylla Melvyn is

not married even if it is the king of England but of a stature like Hawden. Sybylla

Melvyn then went berserk saying when she had ever teased Hawden. Instantly

Sybylla Melvyn felt grateful that she had seen Hawden's true behavior that no one

else knew. Her grandmother then understood why Sybylla Melvyn refused.

The problem then continued when Harold Beecham also started to like

Sybylla Melvyn. Harold even gave Sybylla Melvyn a ring to tie her and as proof

27
that his love for Sybylla Melvyn was sincere. However, Sybylla Melvyn's is

principle, she does not want to be tied down in a marriage relationship and feel

constrained by marital matters. In the novel ( Franklin, 2019 : 163), Sybylla Melvyn

said that not because the social laws are so arranged that a woman's only sphere is

marriage, and because they endeavor to secure a man who can give them a little

more ease, the man must not run away with the idea that it is theiself they are

angling for, when they are only the bothersome appendage with which they would

have to put up, for the sake of their property. The man must not think that because

some women will marry for a home they all will. That what Sybylla Melvyn believe

of marrige.

4. Falling Action

Sybylla Melvyn finally admitted that she loved Harold too, but she couldn't

just ignore her principles. Then Sybylla Melvyn had to be transferred to Mr

M’Swat’s house as a Nanny in return for his father's debt. At the same time Harry

also had to return to Five Bob Downs for four years on duty and made a promise to

Sybylla Melvyn that when he returned Sybylla Melvyn would marry him and

Sybylla Melvyn would not be tempted by any man. Sybylla Melvyn later confirmed

that she was not married because that person had a lot of money, but that she chose

someone who could understand herself. Which stated in the quotation below:

“Only that I was queer and different from other women. But he was waiting
for me to speak. I had put my hand to the plough and could not turn back. I
could not use the word wife, but I put my hand in his, looked at him steadily,
and said—"Harold. I meant what I said last Sunday. If you want me—if I am
of any use to you—I will marry you when I attain my majority.” (Franklin,
2019 : 174-176).

28
Based on quotation above, Harold asked Sybylla Melvyn for waiting for

almostfour years. Sybylla Melvyn accepted that idea but Sybylla Melvyn still give

harold a freedom for choosed any girl while they were in long distance relationship.

Sybylla Melvyn never want to break her principal event she is feel in love with

Harold too.

5. Resolution
Sybylla Melvyn finally had to return to her own house after that three months

of working as a nanny at Mr. M'Swat’s House. She felt grateful that she was sick

make her sent home. However, the gap between Sybylla Melvyn and her mother

has not improved. Her mother felt that Sybylla Melvyn was deliberately hurting her

self because she no longer wanted to help her family. In the novel (Franklin, 2019

: 221) when June gave place to July and July to August, that Sybylla Melvyn could

bear it no longer. Sybylla Melvyn would go away even if she had to walk, and she

would did not know or care. One of her idea being to leave Barney's Gap far behind.

The next thing she knew was that Mrs. M'Swat was shaking me vigorously with

one hand, holding a flaring candle in the other, and saying that she was sick. The

situation make Sybylla Melvyn can turned back home.

The situation at home has also changed. Gertie now lives at her grandmother's

house to replace Sybylla Melvyn. Sybylla Melvyn was no longer too worried that

the news of Harry Beecham, even though they had promised before, but during that

time they never communicated again. Sybylla Melvyn believes that Gertie will

replace herself for Harry.

29
B. Characterization

1. Sybylla Melvyn

Sybylla Melvyn is the main character of this story. She was a happy brave and

boyish girl who lived in Possum Gully. She is also a typical ignorant, impolite, but

adorable child who is often the entertainment of those who see her. As described in

the quotation below

”I am the same to this day. My organ of veneration must be flatter than a

pancake, because to venerate a person simply for his position I never did or
will. To me the Prince of Wales will be no more than a shearer, unless when
I meet him, he displays some personality apart from his prince ship—
otherwise he can go hang...Authentic record of the date when first I had a
horse to myself has not been kept, but it must have been early, as at eight I
was fit to ride anything on the place. Side-saddle, man-saddle, no-saddle, or
astride were all the same time. I rode among the mutterers as gamely as any
of the big sunburnt bushmen.” (Franklin, 2019 : 5- 6)

The quotation above shows that eight years old Sybylla Melvyn was a boyish

and a brave little girl. She could ride a horse with any positions on the place, like

side saddle or girl posission when get a ride on a sit side vehicle. Man saddle, when

you ride a horse truly like a man posision with standing body up there. She also

could ride without saddle, like a pro horse rider. The other qoutation in this novel,

( Franklin, 1999 : 6) stated that Sybylla Melvyn’s mother said that Sybylla Melvyn

should be a boy not a girl. Her mother prostrated, opined I would be a great

unwomanly tomboy. Her father pooched the idea to llet her alone. The rubbishing

conventionalities which are the curse of her sex will bother her soon enough.

Since childhood, Sybylla Melvyn had been accustomed to male nature. She

was able to horse riding without being taught at a very young age. Sybylla Melvyn

also dared to come to admonish her father in the pub when he was drunk. Even

30
though she looks like a little girl, she doesnot care. Sybylla Melvyn is a girl

characterized by her uncontainable mind and distaste for marriage and the limits of

womanhood. Sybylla Melvyn has become an angry, frustrated teenager, seeing life

as a curse and unable to believe in God or love. In the novel (Franklin,2019 : 39-

44), Sybylla Melvyn said that she don't believe there is a God, and if there is, He's

not the merciful being He's always depicted, or He wouldn't be always torturing

Sybylla Melvyn for His own amusement. Syblla keep saying that there was no God.

She was an unbeliever. It was not that she sought after or desired atheism.

Sybylla Melvyn is a diligent, hard worker and cares that education. She also

very fonds of music and is capable of playing the piano and writing. Sybylla Melvyn

had to do her job like feed thirty calves and wash the breakfast dishes. She also need

to prepare the school things of her and her sister However, her busy life takes up

Sybylla Melvyn's time to do her hobby.

Sybylla Melvyn cries easily. A girl who is very fragile but also stubborn. But

she is too embarrassed to show her sadness, or too sad to cry. Sybylla Melvyn also

sometimes doesnot feel confident in herself. She felt insecure of her physical

appereance. Even though many people said that Sybylla Melvyn has a unique

beauty, she still doesnot feel confident. One thing that is hidden from Sybylla

Melvyn after various arguments with those around her is the fact that she loves

everyone, despite her rude attitude towards them. “I was ugly! That truth has

embittered my whole existence. It gives me days and nights ofagony. It is a sensitive

sore that will never heal, a grim hobgoblin that nought can scare away” (Franklin,

2019:42)

31
The quotation above tell that how Sybylla Melvyn feels inside and how her

mother think of her. Kind like she need to do other people expectation of her and it

make her feel not confident of her self. Sybylla Melvyn need to be understood too.

Even the tears did not enough to shows her feeling inside. It means that Sybylla

Melvyn not bold at all. She still have a warm heart that to think that.

2. Harold Augustus Beecham

Harold as known as Harry is a rich man from the Beecham family who owns

the same power in the Five Bob Downs as Caddagat. One of the influential family.

The Bossier and Beecham families were well known and familiar with each other

they were firm and a intimate friends. Harry is a very rich man. He came and went

with the pleasant familiarity practised between congenial spirits among

squatterdom. Harry always visited Bossier family at Caddagat because he is as

comfortable as in Five Bob Downs. As told in the following quotation:

“The Bossiers and Beechams were leaders of swelldom among the

squattocracy up the country, and firm and intimate friends. The
Beechamsresided at Five-Bob Downs, twelve miles from Caddagat, and were
a familycomposed of two maiden ladies and their nephew, Harold. ... he was
nearly as much at home at Caddagat asat Five-Bob Downs. He came and went
with that pleasant familiaritypractised between congenial spirits among
squatter Dom.” (Franklin, 2019: 60)

Harry has another level sense of humor. He makes a joke with Sybylla Melvyn

but sounds like a flirting. He was tought that Sybylla Melvyn is a new assistent in

that house so Harry tried to test her. Harry could controlled his emotion, but when

he got a mad he really could became a lion.

32
3. Dick Melvyn

He was Sybylla Melvyn's father whom Sybylla Melvyn had a great admiration

for at first. Little Sybylla Melvyn thought her father as a hero, a good friend to

Sybylla Melvyn and even an encyclopedia of anythings that Sybylla Melvyn wanted

to know. “Richard Melvyn, you were a fine fellow in those days! A kind and

indulgentparent, a chivalrous husband, a capital host, a man full of ambition and

gentlemanliness” (Franklin, 2019:7).

Little Sybylla Melvyn really liked her father. So she entrusted everything to

her father, even it a religionuntil she was ten years old. Richard Melvyn is a very

ambitious and gentleman. He was also known for his kindness and was rich in

Bruggabrong. In the novel, (Franklin, 2019: 5), quotations stated that her father was

a swell in those days to held Bruggabrong, Bin Bin East, and Bin Bin West, which

three stations totalled close on 200,000 acres. Father was admitted into swelldom

merely by right of his position. His pedigreeincluded nothing beyond a grandfather.

My mother, however, was a fullfledged aristocrat. She was one of the Bossiers of

Caddagat, who numberedamong their ancestry one of the depraved old pirates who

pillaged Englandwith William the Conqueror."Dick" Melvyn was as renowned for

hospitality as joviality, and ourcomfortable, wide-veranda'ed, irregularly built, slab

house in its shelterednook amid the Timlinbilly Ranges was ever full to

overflowing.

Dick Melvyn is a father and a husband who have extraordinary optimism that

the future. Strongly believe in himself and dare to start new things to make his

33
dreams come true. In addition, everything changes when Dick Melvyn have been a

breeder.

“Dick Melvyn being my father did not blind me to the fact that he was
adespicable, selfish, weak creature, and as such I despised him with
therelentlessness of fifteen, which makes no allowance for human frailty
andweakness. Disgust, not honour, was the feeling which possessed me when
Istudied the matter” (Franklin, 2019:19).

He became messier, dirty drunken, even rougher. The impression of a head

family who is responsible and has a future has suddenly disappeared. Dick Melvyn,

was once as famous as a ruler in Bruggabrong, has now become a shabby dairy

farmer, dirty and even has no love for his family. He ignored the environment

around him. It is also explained in another quote that he often goes out of town to

sell his butter but only comes home 2-3 days later because he uses the money to

gamble.

4. Mrs. Bossier

Mrs. Bossier is a Sybylla Melvyn’s Grandmother which is the mother of Lucy

and Helen Bossier. She is very affectionate and cares for her children. She even sent

a letter indicating that she was concerned that what happened to her son at this time.

So he decided to take Sybylla Melvyn to live with him and tried to turn Sybylla

Melvyn into a polite and graceful girl.

From Sybylla Melvyn's grandmother's letter, as said in the previous pages, it

can be seen that her grandmother was a religious person. His mind, which was still

contaminated with the general rule of society that an adult girl should be married

off immediately, she really wanted to do to Sybylla Melvyn. It is also a form of love

for a grandmother for her grandchild.

34
5. Frank Hawden
A tall, lanky young man who worked for Sybylla Melvyn’s grandmother. At

the start of his meeting with Sybylla Melvyn, he was a kind man who was very

polite. He is also a Jackeroo on the farm that Sybylla Melvyn‘s grandmother has

and is in charge of taking care of the horses. A young man who is friendly and able

to break the ice between him and Sybylla Melvyn.

Similar with the most men, Frank Hawden is also good at flirting. He was

always trying to win Sybylla Melvyn's heart. Once he tried to propose to Sybylla

Melvyn, telling her that he liked Sybylla Melvyn, she unfortunately refused.

Sybylla Melvyn really didnot want to get involved in a relationship. Instantly Frank

Hawden revealed his true nature. He became even more rude when Sybylla Melvyn

refused him and it made Sybylla Melvyn awkward. He also tried to make Sybylla

Melvyn look like the meanest person to his grandmother.

In otherwise, the bad version of Frank Hawden shows in this quotation:

“You infernal little vixen! What are you laughing at? You've got now.
"You are not going to escape me like that, my fine lady. I will make you
listento me this time or you will hear more that it," and he seized me angrily
bythe wrist.I cannot bear the touch of any one—it is one of my idiosyncrasies.
With mydisengaged hand I struck him a vigorous blow on the nose, and
wrenchingmyself free sprang away, saying, "How dare you lay a finger on
me! If youattempt such a thing again I'll make short work of you. Mark my
words, oryou'll get something more than a bleeding nose next time, I promise
you.” (Franklin, 2019 : 82)

From the quotation, it can be seen that Frank Hawden, who has been rejected

by Sybylla Melvyn, is still trying to get Sybylla Melvyn. Sybylla Melvyn who has

35
no feeling for Hawden feels uncomfortable and annoyed by Hawden's treat at her.

Sybylla Melvyn tried to defense her self then hit Frank Hawden until his bleeding.

Hawden, who did not accepted it, then told the incident to Sybylla Melvyn’s

Grannie and playing victim, so that Sybylla Melvyn was guilty. Mr. Hawden said

to Mrs. Bossier that Sybylla Melvyn was flirted him and the thoughts of Frank

Hawden were the reverse of flaterri.

6. Everard Grey

In ( Franklin, 2019 : 63) of the novel, Everard Grey describe as a young

gentleman who always spent his Christmas at Caddagat, but as he had just recovered

from an illness he was coming up for a change instead. He was Sybylla Melvyn’s

grandmother adopted son, and was the orphan of very aristocratic English parents

who had left him to the guardianship of distant relatives. They had proved

criminally unscrupulous. Grannie had discovered, reared, and educated him.

Among professions he had chosen the bar, and was nowone of Sydney's most

promising young barristers. His foster-mother was noend proud of him, and loved

him as her own son.

Although he was an orphan, he came from an aristocratic family of British

aristocratic descent. The kind of perfect man who can be proud of his adoptive

parents and one of the most influential young lawyers in Sydney who is also where

he studied. Gray also has a bar that he has built by himself. Meanwhile in other

qoutation explined:

“He had a typically aristocratic English face, even to the cold

rather heartless expression, which is as established a point of an Englishblue
blood as an arched neck is of a thoroughbred horse. whichwas a great treat, as

36
he had a well-trained and musical baritone voice. Hewas a veritable carpet
knight, and though not a fop, was exquisitely dressedin full evening costume,
and showed his long pedigreed blood in every lineof his clean-shaven face
and tall slight figure. He was quite a champion onthe piano, and played aunt
Helen's accompaniments while he made her singsong after song.” (Franklin,
2019 : 67-68)

The quotation above is that how Everard Gray's looks amaze as British

descent are reflected in his blood. Not only smart, he is also a person with a high

artistic soul. Being able to sing and play the piano adds to the charming of Everard

Grey. Slow but sure, Grey begin to had a feeling for Sybylla Melvyn. He showed

his admiration for Sybylla Melvyn by praising her. Everard Gray feels that Sybylla

Melvyn’s abilities will be very unfortunate if not developed. Even though he knew

that his adoptive mother would not allow him, so he decided to marry Sybylla

Melvyn. However, aunt Helen refused. Aunt Helen thinks marriage is not a matter

for trivial matters like that and for some reason, Sybylla Melvyn is no match for

Everard who thinks that Sybylla Melvyn is an ordinary girl.

2. Caddagat

is one of a biggest livestock in Australia and Sybylla Melvyn’s Bossier family is

the owner

38
3. Five Bob Downs

Same as Caddagat, Five Bob Downs is a district that owned by Beecham

family. As one of the capitals, Five Bob Downs is usually used as a place to

celebrate Australian important royal celebration or a place for horse races.

4. Goulburn

In the beginning of the story, Goulburn is a place near Caddagat that Sybylla

Melvyn and her family spent their life until Sybylla Melvyn almost nine years old

then moving to Possum Gully

5. Barney’s Gap

Barney’s Gap is one of a capital that Mr M’Swat and family lives. Sybylla

Melvyn was a nanny there to teached Mr. M’Swat children as a payback of Sybylla

Melvyn’s father debts.

B. Theme

After reading the novel several times and watching the scene,

thewriterfindsthe theme for this novel are family issues, and feminism. The

bankruptcy that happened to Melvyn’s family made the gap between her and her

parent. Sybylla Melvyn become mature before her age. She begin an independent

women and not trusted love at all. She refused the rules that women need a man to

complete their life. All the story told that how Sybylla Melvyn faced her life, the

conflict between her and people around her especially her own family, and a

struggled for her self.

39
4.2 The Conflict Experienced by Sybylla Melvyn

The main character named Sybylla Melvyn experienced the conflict that

occured in her life. That conflict can be divided into two categories, internal conflict

and external conflict. The internal conflict that faced by Sybylla Melvyn are Sybylla

Melvyn does not believe in god and love, Sybylla Melvyn is not confident with her

self, giving up her hobbies for the sake of working, and denial toward Harold’s love

because of Sybylla Melvyn’s strong indepenence. While the external conflict that

occured in Sybylla Melvyn’s life areconflict with Father, conflict with Mother,

conflict with Grandmother, conflict with Frank Hawden, conflict with Harold. As

explained below as internal and external conflict.

A. Internal conflict

1. Sybylla Melvyn does not believe in god and love

One of internal conflict that always occur in human self is that the

trusted to god. This conflict also experienced by Sybylla Melvyn. She has not

believed in any religion since she was ten years old.

“... Since then I havebeen religionless.” ( Franklin, 2019 : 7).

Little bit old, when Sybylla Melvyn feel depressed or have a chaos with

her mother, she said fiercely that there is no god. Sybylla Melvyn think if god

is really exist, she will never feel mad and dissapoint with her destiny. As told

in the quotation “Not believe in God! I was mad! If there really was a God,

would they kindly tell me how to find Him?” ( Franklin, 2019 : 44)

40
In other quotation said, that Sybylla Melvyn does not believe in love

too. What Sybylla Melvyn mean with love is, a love which bring her going to

married. Sybylla Melvyn does not want to be limited by marriage, which in

her point of view the husband will give limited spacewhen married a women.

As the following qoutation “Marriage to me appeared the most horribly tied-

down and unfairto-women existence going. It would be from fair to middling

if there waslove; but I laughed at the idea of love, and determined never,

never, neverto marry” (Franklin, 2019:39).

From the quotations above, Sybylla Melvyn feels humiliated if she gets

married, especially if in marriage, the man only offers money as a guarantee

of happiness. So she decided to be able to earn his own income and would not

depend on a man for her life. Even if he is a king of England though. Sybylla

Melvyn did not want to be humiliated by a man just because of a marriage

bond.

2. Sybylla Melvyn is not confident with her self

Close with other girls, pyshical appearence is one important thing.

Sybylla Melvyn always feels that she is ugly, useless, and unloved. This is

because the pressure that experienced by her. The life problems that Sybylla

Melvyn experienced indirectly disturbed Sybylla Melvyn's mentality and self-

confidence. In the novel ( Franklin, 2019 :55), Sybylla Melvyn felt that no

one love her,t that she had never striven to be lovable. She think that she was

ugly, nastu and miserable, also useless. As state too in, “I am just as ugly as

ever”( Franklin, 2019 : 98 ).

41
Sybylla Melvyn never feels that she is a special girl. She rejected her

self and always fells ugly at all. It make her underpressured. Even she is in a

good condition, she still believe that she is ugly.

3. Giving up her hobbies for the sake of working

While working on the farm, the two things that Sybylla Melvyn knew

were working and sleeping. She was too busy making dairy and tending

livestock so she forgot her passion, books and art. She has to give up her

bedtime just to do the only thing she likes during her recess. Sybylla Melvyn

also understood that there was no time for her to complain that the poverty

she was now experiencing. However, Sybylla Melvyn's happiness will return

if she is already dealing with her own passion. Which stated in the novel

(Franklin, 2019: 22), that there was a third part in her which cried out to be

fed. She longed for the arts Music was a passion with her. She borrowed every

book in the neighbourhood and stole hours from rest to read them. This told

upon her and made her physical burdens harder for me than for other children

of my years aroundme. That third was the strongest part of her. She lived a

dream-life withwriters, artists, and musicians.

4. Denial toward Harold’s love because of Sybylla Melvyn’s strong

independence.

In the novel, (Franklin, 2019 : 248-249) stated that harold dropped

Sybylla Melvyn’s hands and drew himself up. She will not take your No till

the morning. They faced that and walked homewards in unbroken silence.

Sybylla Melvyn thought much that night when all the house was abed. It was

42
tempting Harold would be good to me, and would lift me from this life of

poverty which she hated, to one of ease. She was leading now that her only

chance of getting above it was by marriage, and Harold Beecham's offer was

the one chance of a lifetime. Perhaps he could manage her well enough.

Sybylla Melvyn was think that she had better marry him, but marriage is a

solemn issue of life for Sybylla Melvyn.

In the quotation above, it is very clear that Harold wants to marry

Sybylla Melvyn immediately. Harold also understood Sybylla Melvyn’s

principle of freedom in marriage. Harold admits that Sybylla Melvyn is a

smart woman that Harold really shouldn't have. Until Harold could offer

Sybylla Melvyn anything she wanted to. However, Sybylla Melvyn remained

in her position.

Sybylla Melvyn has also admitted that she loves Harold, but she still

holds on to her character to live independently with herself. Sybylla Melvyn

hopes that Harold will also be able to love her younger sister Gertie if they

get to know each other better. Harold then denied, saying that Sybylla Melvyn

was only jealous of the letter Harold had sent to Gertie. Harold was still

pleading with Sybylla Melvyn. Sybylla Melvyn was that to melt again but

kept looking for an opening so she wouldn't fall on Harold.

Sybylla Melvyn's decision was a decision that was quite painful for

herself. However, according to Sybylla Melvyn, the principle is above all.

Sybylla Melvyn is still trying to refuse Harold even though the words that

Sybylla Melvyn said hurt Harold enough. But Sybylla Melvyn was still weak

43
from Harold's gaze. There was a feeling of excitement in Sybylla Melvyn that

she could not possibly reveal to Harold. Finally, Sybylla Melvyn firmly stated

that she would never marry Harold and would let him go. Even though her

heart was in pain.

B. Eksternal conflict

1. Conflict with Father

Sybylla Melvyn's troubles started when her father suddenly decided to

move from Goulburn to Possum Gully. Her father's mistaken by investing

their shares in a convict priest and left Sybylla Melvyn’s family with

bankruptcy and poverty. Father that Sybylla Melvyn was so proud of suddenly

turned into a very messy person. As a result, his father became a drunkard and

gambler who was not responsible for his family, which caused Sybylla

Melvyn need to go to her grandmother's house and bear the shame of his

father's behavior. Sybylla Melvyn even had to get used to looking for her

father who was drunk in the pub. The few quotations below explained:

“This was the feasible light in which father shaded his desire to leave.
Thefact of the matter was that the heartless harridan, discontent, had laid
herclaw-like hand upon him. His guests were ever assuring him he was
buriedand wasted in Timlinbilly's gullies. A man of his intelligence,
coupled with hiswonderful experience among stock, would, they
averred, make a name andfortune for himself dealing or auctioneering if
he only liked to try. Dick Melvyn of Bruggabrong was not recognizable
in Dick Melvyn, dairyfarmer and cocky of Possum Gully. The former
had been a man worthy ofthe name. The latter was a slave of drink,
careless, even dirty andbedraggled in his personal appearance. He
disregarded all manners, and hadbecome far more plebeian and common
than the most miserable specimenof humanity around him.” (Franklin,
2019 : 18-19).

44
Sybylla Melvyn’s father always believed in his decide. The kind of

people that have a great believer in their soul, not know fear, and like any

challenging situation. Sybylla Melvyn’s father always tried to take his

opportunities even at last he will felt down over and over again.

2. Conflict with mother

In the novel (Franklin, 2019 : -31), Sybylla Melvyn’s mother stated that

she is afraid they will have to break up the home altogether. That because

Sybylla Melvyn’s father has no idea of making a living. The conflict begin

when Sybylla Melvyn said that would not be easier, Sybylla Melvyn argued

for their relations to each give a little towards setting us up again, than to be

burdened with the whole responsibility of rearing a child. Their family much

prefer it.

From the quotation above, her mother said that she could no longer bear

Sybylla Melvyn’s life and advised her to look for a life on her own. At first

Sybylla Melvyn refused because she thinks a child who grew up without

affection and a close distance from their family would have a different

character. However, the mother continues to explain their current situation,

which is really very difficult, plus they have to bear the burden of Sybylla

Melvyn. So with a big heart Sybylla Melvyn obeyed what her mother said.

Not long after Sybylla Melvyn left for her grandmother's house, her

mother again sent a letter to Sybylla Melvyn asking to work at the M'Swat

family home on the 8th of January 1897 as a nanny for his children who also

45
paid for her father's debt. Sybylla Melvyn's pressure continued until finally

she was sent home again due to illness caused by her own thoughts.

“Perhaps you will not find it as pleasant as Caddagat; but he has been
very good, and offers you a fair number of holidays, and what he will
give you is equal to 20 pounds. That is a lot inthese times, when he could
easily get so many better girls than you are inevery way for half the
money, and make your father pay the interest, andthereby be 10 pounds
in pocket. You will have to help Mrs M'Swat with thework and sewing;
but that will do you good, and I hope you will try hard togive every
satisfaction. I have also written to your grandmother. That letter wiped
away ever vestige of my appetite for the dainties beforeme. M'Swat's!
Send—me—to M'Swat's! I could not believe it! It must be a nightmare!
M'Swat's!” (Franklin, 2019 : 181-182)

3. Conflict with Grandmother

After arriving at her grandmother's house in Caddagat, her grandmother

has the ambition to turn Sybylla Melvyn into a better woman. Her

grandmother understood that Sybylla Melvyn had talent, but she felt that she

was not born for it. The power that her grandmother has in her house makes

Sybylla Melvyn once again harbor her hopes for her passion. Grandma said

that passion only for the the lower girls classification. As in the quotation

below:

“Career!" exclaimed his foster-mother, catching at the word. "Career!

That isall girls think of now, instead of being good wives and mothers
andattending to their homes and doing what God intended. All they think
of isgadding that and being fast, and ruining themselves body and soul.
Andthe men are as bad to encourage them," (Franklin, 2019:74)

Another problem between Grandma and Sybylla Melvyn is her decision

to marry Sybylla Melvyn with someone so that she could change her bad

behavior, as previously Sybylla Melvyn’s mother complained to her

grandmother through letters. Unfortunately, her grandmother wanted Sybylla

46
Melvyn to marry someone Sybylla Melvyn didn't like. Her grandmother

thought that if Sybylla Melvyn married someone who had money, it would be

able to change Sybylla Melvyn 's life in the future. Sybylla Melvyn firmly

refused. Her grandmother once said “No. He wants to marry you, and has

asked my consent. I told him it allrested with yourself and parents. What do

you say?” ( Franklin 2019 : 84 ).

Sybylla Melvyn strong personality refused that idea. She never want to

faced any thing about married. She choose to be an independent women and

tried to have her own life without a men.

4. Conflict with Frank Hawden

As been told before, Frank Hawden is a confidant for Sybylla Melvyn’s

Grannie and also a Jackaroo. From the very beginning of Sybylla Melvyn's

arrival, Frank Hawden had accompanied Sybylla Melvyn. Until Hawden

begin to have feeling for Sybylla Melvyn. Based on what was explained

before, Sybylla Melvyn never wanted to marry. She do not believe at love and

men. Hawden then stated that he liked Sybylla Melvyn as the quotation

below:

“By Jove! I would just liketo take you home. You'd surprise some
English girls I know.” There would be more than one person surprised
if I married you," I thoughtto myself, and laughed till I ached with the
motion."You infernal little vixen! What are you laughing at? You've got
no moresense than a bat if such a solemn thing only provokes your mirth.
”Solemn—why, it's a screaming farce!" I laughed more and
more."What's a farce?" he demanded fiercely.
"The bare idea of you proposing to me."( Franklin, 2019 : 82-83 ).

47
The real Hawden’s character then appears when he feels rejected by Sybylla

Melvyn. Hawden thinks that Sybylla Melvyn is easy to beat, but he doesn't

know Sybylla Melvyn’s principle of not wanting to marry someone especially

with a character like Frank Hawden.

5. Conflict with Harold

Harold is the one and only man that can take Sybylla Melvyn’s eyes on

him. Harold is also a man with stubborn stature and full of ambition. The

sincerity of Harold's love for Sybylla Melvyn is shown by the ring that Harold

gave to Sybylla Melvyn. However, as previously explained Sybylla Melvyn

does not want to be bound in any relationship but does not reject it either. So

Harold said that he was ready to wait for Sybylla Melvyn for three months to

think that it until Sybylla Melvyn was ready to use the ring he gave him.

After being given time to think, Sybylla Melvyn changed her mind

again. She felt she couldnot keep herself with Harry. She didnot want to be

restrained, didnot want to be in a bond that would limit her. She then angered

Harold. tried to test Harold's resilience in his emotions. Sybylla Melvyn said

harshly that she didnot want Harold, nor did Harold's possessions.

Furthermore, Sybylla Melvyn said she didnot need people with lots of money

if she did not like them.

Harold reiterated that he wanted to marry Sybylla Melvyn, but Sybylla

Melvyn thought that Harold would be happier if he married her sister Gertie.

Even though Harold feel Gertie is still young, Sybylla Melvyn still believes

Harold to marry Gertie instead of Sybylla Melvyn. As the quotation below:

48
“Do you think I am that sort, that cares for a person onlybecause he has
alittle money? Why! that is the very thing I am always preaching against.
If aman was a lord or a millionaire I would not have him if I loved him
not, but Iwould marry a poor cripple if I loved him. It wasn't because
you owned FiveBob Downs that I liked you, but because you have a big
heart in which onewould have room to get warm, and because you are
true, and because youare kind and big and—" Here I could feel my voice
getting shaky, and beingafraid I would make a fool of myself by crying,
I left off.” ( Franklin, 2019 : 174)
"Marry Gertie! Why, she's only a child! A mere baby, in fact. Marry
Gertie! Inever thought of her in that light; and did you think I was that
sort of afellow, Syb?" he asked reproachfully.
"No, I did not consider it flirtation; but that is what I thought you
wouldterm it when announcing your affection for Gertie."
"Gertie! Pretty little Gertie! I never looked upon the child as anything
butyour sister, consequently mine also. She's a child."
"Child! She is eighteen. More than a year older than I was when you
firstintroduced the subject of matrimony to me, and she is very beautiful,
andtwenty times as good and lovable as I could ever be even in my
bestmoments.”(Franklin,2019 : 245)

The second quotation tells that Sybylla Melvyn pushed Harold to just

marry Gertie. Harold would not to do that. Harold want Sybylla Melvyn, but

Sybylla Melvyn totally rejected him and sounds like Sybylla Melvyn jealous

with the letter which Harold sent to Gerrtie. Even her heart for Harold,

Sybylla Melvyn do not show it. Sybylla Melvyn’s principle is bigger than her

loved.

4.3 Problem solve of Sybylla Melvyn’s conflicts

In this novel, Sybylla Melvyn has wrote her problem solve it self. Sybylla

Melvyn forgot her rude and tried to be a kind girl who can accepted all the problem

that apeears in her life. She strongly believe that the truth will bring rest to the soul

and even all the vain ambition came, even it king or slave, all must die. Same as her

problem. She should begin a new phase in her life.

49
Sybylla Melvyn think that she only have a long for rest. She was so blessed

being a women. Sybylla Melvyn slowly understand that what a meaning of women

in her society. Being a women means they have to be brave, truth, sweet, and no

matter the life has been great or small, fast or slow, remember that toughest live are

brittle, bravest, and the best lightly fall. Which stated in the long quotation below:

“Possum Gully, 25th March, 1899

Time is thorough in his work, and as that arch-cheat, Hope,
graduallybecomes a phantom of the past, the neck will grow inured to
its yoke. Tonight is one of the times when the littleness—the abject
littleness—of allthings in life comes home to me. After all, what is there
in vain ambition? King or slave, we all must die, andwhen death knocks
at our door, will it matter whether our life has been great or small, fast
or slow, so long as it has been true—true with the truth that will bring
rest to the soul? But the toughest lives are brittle, And the bravest and
the best Lightly fall—it matters little;
Now I only long for rest. To weary hearts throbbing slowly in hopeless
breasts the sweetest thing i srest. ... Would that I weremore worthy to be
one of you—more a typical Australian peasant—cheerful, honest,
brave! I love you, I love you. Bravely you jog along with the rope of
class distinction drawing closer, closer, tighter, tighter around you: a few
more generationsand you will be as enslaved as were ever the moujiks
of Russia. I see it andknow it, but I cannot help you. My ineffective life
will be trod out in the same round of toil—I am only one of yourselves,
I am only an unnecessary, little, bush commoner, I am only a—woman!
The great sun is sinking in the west, grinning and winking knowingly as
hegoes, upon the starving stock and drought-smitten wastes of land.
Nearer he draws to the gum-tree scrubby horizon, turns the clouds to
orange, scarlet, silver flame, gold! Down, down he goes.
With much love and good wishes to all—Goodnight! Good-bye!
AMEN” (Franklin, 2019: 256-257).

At the end of the story, Sybylla Melvyn wrote her own thoughts that

how she should have behaved so far. That how she can deal with all the problems

that exist in her life. Sybylla Melvyn regretted being a violent and wild girl. One

thing that Sybylla Melvyn and people should always do is being grateful. Sybylla

Melvyn is proud of her life, Sybylla Melvyn is proud of the people around her and

50
still loves her, Sybylla Melvyn is proud to be a breder and butter farmer, and Sybylla

Melvyn is proud to be born a woman.

Sybylla Melvyn believes that, even though we are born as women whose job

is to be slaves in the family, a woman must also remain strong, rather than being

trampled on, so that future generations can feel the same equality with other people.

She was quite proud of her courage against the dominant caste class.

Sybylla Melvyn was proud and she was grateful. Thankful that you are still

surrounded by your family. Sybylla Melvyn finally realized, even though poverty

came to her family, Sybylla Melvyn was sure that it would soon disappear as

summer would definitely turn into winter, autumn was replaced by a beautiful

spring. At the end of her writing, Sybylla Melvyn hopes that there will be a beautiful

story for her and for the people around her.

51
CHAPTER 5
CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION
5.1 Conclusion

Based on the analysis, the writer concludes that the conflict between Sybylla

Melvyn and people around her was originally caused by the poverty that they have

experienced and the feminist attitude within Sybylla Melvyn. She was forced to

become mature than her age and think of the burdens she shouldn't have felt at such

a young age. Than this has affected Sybylla Melvyn's character, which is considered

incompatible with the existing rules in society at that time. One of them which is

that Sybylla Melvyn’s refusal to marry because she wanted to maintain her

independence and does not want to be restrained by others, but behind it all, Sybylla

Melvyn is still a soft-hearted child. The problem that occured, could Sybylla

Melvyn solved by her self. Sybylla Melvyn believe that the truth is all the answer.

A. Synopsisof My Brilliant Career

My Brilliant Career tracks the life experiences of Sybylla Melvyn Sybylla

Melvyn Melvyn. Shows Sybylla Melvyn as a bold and happy little girl enjoying an

ideal rural childhood. This golden period is followed by a series of disappointments.

In either case, as Sybylla Melvyn grows, she grows away from her ruralparadise

due to a number of causes. Her adored father proves to be restless and incautious in

his property deals, and moves the family to a less pleasant property. The world

becomes less attractive to her, and her parents become less attractive to her also,

because their circumstances get worse and because she begins to see them more

clearly. Sybylla Melvyn is a sharp-eyed and unforgiving narrator, and recounts the

weaknesses of those around her harshly. Her father’s poor business dealings and

thoughtless ambitions are harshly dealt with, as is her mother’s worn gentility, and

even more worn out temper.

As the oldest, misunderstood teenage daughter, the story recounts Sybylla

Melvyn’s trials. She must undertake uncongenial work for the family, and is

deprived of culture in the form of reading and learning. It is Sybylla Melvyn who

must retrieve her drunken father from the pub, and suffer embarrassments and

humiliations. A brief reprieve comes when her genteel grandmother writes and asks

her mother to send her to Caddagat, the childhood home of her mother, and she gets

a taste of the higher life she has longed for – a world of reading, leisure, and a

sympathetic environment.

56
This environment also offers romantic possibilities, particularly in the form

of local wealthy landowner Harold Beecham. Yet, like any return to paradise, or a

place that we have loved, it can’t last, and when the family finances deteriorate,

Sybylla Melvyn is recalled home by her mother and sent out to work as a poorly

trained governess with the farcically named M’Swat family. There Sybylla Melvyn

suffers horribly, and begs her refined aunt and grandmother at Caddagat to

intervene with her mother on her behalf. Finally, in melodramatic fashion she

comes down with ‘nervous prostration’, and must be returned to her family.

Sybylla Melvyn is irritating, in the way that self-absorbed, self-pitying people are,

when they are not ourselves or our best friends; but most readers still want her to

be rescued from her situation, and one of the interesting things that the novel is the

way that it ends.

B. Biography of Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin

Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin (1879-1954), writer, was born on 14

October 1879 at Talbingo, New South Wales, eldest child of native-born parents

John Maurice Franklin, of Brindabella station, and his wife Margaret Susannah

Helena, née Lampe, who was the great-granddaughter of Edward Miles (or Moyle)

who had arrived with the First Fleet in the Scarborough with a seven years sentence

for theft. Childhood at Brindabella (1963) illuminates Stella's first decade amongst

pioneering families of the Monaro. She was educated at home and at Thornford

Public School after 1889, when her family moved to Stillwater, an unrewarding

small holding near Goulburn. That 1902 the family took up unspecified farming

57
enterprises at Cranebrook, near Penrith, and later at Chesterfield, and finally by

1915, giving up the land altogether, went to the modest south-west Sydney suburb

of Carlton: her much diminished inheritance.

Downward mobility heightened Stella Franklin's pride and self-awareness,

and contributed much to the making of Miles Franklin, nationalist, feminist and

novelist. She readily appreciated her father's loss; shared hardships suffered

especially by her more vigorous mother; and surmounted her own educational

disadvantages proving thereafter an enterprising aspirant to literature. Her bush-

bred talents were fostered by Charles Blyth, tutor at Brindabella, Thomas

Hebblewhite of the Goulburn Evening Penny Post, and, after governessing near

Yass in 1897, the example of Charlotte Brontë. Writing, rather than teaching,

nursing and Edward O'Sullivan's testimonials, delivered independence.

Without rejecting a marriage proposal from her relative Edwin Bridle in 1905,

Franklin boldly embarked in the Ventura for the United States of America on 7

April 1906, intending to work as a 'Mary Ann', and publish at least one of the three

manuscripts written since 1901, maybe Some Everyday Folk and Dawn

(Edinburgh, 1909), set near Penrith. She arrived to the debris of the San Francisco

earthquake. Her ill-documented first months in California appear to have been

determined by a shipmate nurse of Seventh Day Adventist persuasion and letters of

introduction to feminists from Vida Goldstein.

Franklin's responsibilities grew steadily: in 1908 she was, unofficially, part-

time secretary to the league, from 1910 secretary at a salary of $25 a week, in 1912

unofficially assistant editor to Alice Henry on its monthly journal, Life and Labor,

58
in 1913-14 co-editor and, briefly, editor in 1915. In her limited spare time she took

singing and piano lessons. Something of those dynamic years on Dearborn Street,

Chicago, may be gleaned from her little-known romance, The Net of Circumstance,

published in London in 1915 under her pseudonym 'Mr and Mrs Ogniblat L'Artsau'.

Of feminist and biographical significance, it was her only American-based creative

work to be published. Miles Franklin now had two careers, both pursued full-pelt.

Her ever-worrying health collapsed in 1912, shortly after her first visit in 1911 to

England and France. Then in her early thirties, she redoubled her literary and

political efforts. But she was increasingly unsettled, partly by the attentions of

bright young men.

Exhausted, Franklin worked briefly at Margaret McMillan's crèche at

Deptford, and 'kept the wolf from the door' as a cook at the Minerva Café, High

Holborn, meanwhile ineffectually negotiating under male noms de plume with

publishers or dabbling in journalism. In June 1917 she joined as a voluntary worker

the 'American' Unit of the Scottish Women's Hospitals for Foreign Service stationed

at Ostrovo, Macedonia, and commanded by Dr Agnes Bennett and Dr Mary De

Garis, a stimulating but debilitating experience for 'Franky Doodle', orderly. She

returned unwell to London in February 1918, apparently not enticed to stay by the

possibility of a paid post as cook on a twelve month contract. An inquiry that joining

the Women's Royal Air Force foreshadowed her enthusiasm for the air-based

defence of Australia.

Family pressure, health and hope of 'Brent' brought her home in 1927, where

she pursued her vocation by hiring a Hurstville hotel-room for typing, and eschewed

59
'tuft-hunters'. Between 1928 and 1931, Blackwoods published three of a projected

nine-volume pastoral saga by 'Brent of Bin Bin'. The novels were well received and

the little mystery of authorship exuberantly sustained until after her death by the

author, her intimates and her publishers.

Miles Franklin openly feared death, which came with coronary occlusion on

19 September 1954 in hospital at Drummoyne. She was cremated with Anglican

rites (she had been confirmed at All Saints Anglican Church, Collector, in 1894);

busybodies removed relatives' wildflowers from her coffin. Her ashes were

scattered on Jounama Creek, Talbingo. She left the residue of her estate, valued for

probate at £8922, to found an award for Australian literature. Her vision survives

in the annual Miles Franklin award (first won by Patrick White for Voss in 1957),

her published work, the international screen success of My Brilliant Career (a

development she anticipated for Australian novels in the 1930s), and in her

voluminous papers, willed to the Mitchell Library, Sydney—a select archive of the

paradoxes of Australian history and culture, of which she was a proud and

challenging, but elusive, expression. She had proved 'a real hard doer', as they used

to say up country.
