TEACHER HANDOUT
A. The teacher will check the level of understanding of the learners by unscrambling the letters then giving the
definition of the word.
Direction: Unscramble the letter by placing the correct letter in the second row of boxes to come up with the
correct answer. Use the numbered boxes to complete the answer to the riddle below.

1. The control center of the cell 3. The main site for photosynthesis
L E S N U C U R O S T A C P L H O L
N U C L E U S C H L O R O P L A S T

1 2 1 3 7 5 6 9 8

2. Storage of water 4. Provides rigidity to the cell

O L E U V A C L E C L L A W L

V A C U O L E C E L L W A L L

6 1 3 2 1 2 3 4 6 3 4

RIDDLE: I have it, you have it, everyone just love it!
C L E L S T A R P
C E L L P A R T S
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

B. The teacher will print-out pictures of Biologists with their contributions on the discoveries of the cell.
1. Robert Hooke – discovered cells while looking at a thin slice of cork
2. Anton van Leeuwenhoek – invented the first microscope, known as the father of Microbiology
3. Matthias Schleiden – German Botanist who concluded that all plants are composed of cells
4. Theodor Schwann – stated that all animals are composed of cells
5. Rudolf Virchow- stated that living cells arise from pre-existing cells

C and D. The teacher will ask volunteer learners from each group and they will match the pictures of some
biologists with their contributions on the discovery of the cell. After matching the pictures with their
contribution, a gallery walk follows, where the detailed contributions are given.

Robert Hooke – the first one the apply the word “cell” to describe the basic
unit of life

TEACHER HANDOUT

Anton van Leeuwenhoek – known as the “Father of Microbiology” because he
pioneered in the field of microscopy. The very first scientist to describe and observe
microorganisms and called it “animalcules”. He also studied about muscle fibers,
bacteria, spermatozoa and blood flow in capillaries.

Matthias Jakob Schleiden – he said that, “every structural part of a plant was made
up of cells”. He is a German Botanist

Theodore Schwann – a Greman Zoologist who stated in 1839 that, “all animals are
composed of cells

Rudolf Virchow – he stated, “Omnis cellula e cellula” meaning cells come from pre-
existing cells.

E. The teacher let the learners create a song by group, based from their knowledge on some of the biologists and
their contributions to the discoveries of the cell. Assigned a biologist for each group to avoid duplication. It can be
one stanza only and they can use any tune that they want to.

F. The thik-pair-share strategy can be applied and let the learners share in front of the class what are their learnings.

G. The learners will answer the questions
1. “ What do you think is the importance of a microscope?”
2. “If microscope was not introduced a long time ago, what do you think would have happen to
microbiology?”

2. Who was the first one to use the microscope?
3. Who discovered “animalcules”?
4. What are considered as “animalcules” nowadays?
