3.

3 Creating an initial assessment (Vidya pm)

1. Choose one of the topics from the content of the syllabus.

Metals

2. As you did in lesson 3.2, think about the level of understanding of this topic
that a student should have before they start to study.

Core

1 Compare the general physical properties of metals and non-metals, including:

(a) Thermal conductivity (b) electrical conductivity

(c) Malleability and ductility (d) melting points and boiling points

2 Describe the general chemical properties of metals, limited to their reactions with:

(a) Dilute acids (b) cold water and steam (c) oxygen

Required Prior Knowledge:

 Recall and list the names of metals used in prior classes.

 Where possible, learner able to write the word equation of different metal
compounds.
 Must know about reactants and products.
 Must know about elements and compounds.
 Must know that metals have different reactivity.
 Know where metals are found in periodic table.
 Must know some of uses of everyday metals.

3. Create an initial assessment that contains at least five questions to check

your learners’ level of understanding and ability at the start of their studies.
You can use your own questions or take questions from past papers if you
think that is appropriate.

Worksheet along with activity sheet given

4. Write a short explanation of:

o How the assessment will help you understand your learners' level of
understanding and confidence

Assessment provide information about the knowledge and skills students

have, how well they learned it and where they struggled.it gives a reliable
data about effects of curriculum including teaching methods.

o What you will do with the information from the test.

I would use the information to plan for recapitulation during transaction
flow.

o What you could do help your learners who do not have the required
level of knowledge/ability.

 We can provide them instant feedback

 Provide remedial teaching
 Connected study with daily life
 Make them to participate where they are lagging.
 Every day chapter recall.
ACTIVITY SHEET-1
1. Look at the diagram. It shows some of the elements in the Periodic Table.

Use this Periodic Table to answer these questions.

(a) Write down the chemical symbol of the most reactive element in Group 1.

……………………………………………………………………………………. [1]

(b) Write down the name of the element in the same group as Lithium & potassium.

……………………………………………………………………………………... [1]

2. Pierre investigates a type of reaction. He reacts different metals with different salt
solutions. Here are his results.
(a) Put the metals in order of reactivity.

One has been done for you.

most reactive…………………………………..

…………………………………...

iron

…………………………………..

least reactive…………………………………. [1]

(b) Magnesium reacts with zinc sulfate solution. This reaction has two products.

Write the word equation for this reaction.

3. The chemical symbol for lithium is Li.

The formula for water is H2O.

The formula for lithium hydroxide is LiOH.

Which of these substances is a compound?

Choose from lithium, water or lithium hydroxide.

......................................................................... [1]

4. Lithium is in Group 1 of the Periodic Table.

The diagram shows some of the elements in Group 1 of the Periodic Table.
Describe how the reactivity of the Group 1 metals changes as you go down the group.
