Research Topic Displacement reactions

Abstract
(An abstract is concise, around eight to ten sentences, and is written in an objective, impersonal style)

A displacement reaction is a chemical reaction in which an element(s) is replaced by more reactive element(s) in a
chemical compound. In other words, the atoms of the more reactive metal push their electrons on to ions of the less
reactive metal. Both metals as well as non-metals participate in these displacement reactions. A displacement reaction is
also known as a replacement reaction or a metathesis reaction. There are two types of displacement reactions: Single
displacement reaction Double displacement reaction. A single-replacement reaction is a chemical reaction in which one
element is substituted for another element in a compound, generating a new element and a new compound as products.
For example, the reaction between copper and silver nitrate in order to produce copper nitrate and hydrogen is a single
displacement reaction. Here only one element (silver) is replaced by a more reactive element (copper). The equation of
single displacement reaction is A+BC -- B + AC and the equation for double displacement reaction is AB + CD -

AD + CB. In this assignment we have described and explained the application of displacement reaction in separation of
iron from iron ore by electrolysis.

Objective
(What are you trying to achieve or aim of your findings, it has to be written in bullet points)

 To understand the purpose and importance of displacement reaction in real life

 To be able to work out the products of displacement reactions to write word equations
 To be able to understand the reactivity of metals in the reactivity series.
 To be able to understand identify the variables that change in a displacement reaction in order to identify
whether a chemical reaction is a displacement reaction or not.
 To comprehensively understand the process of a practical displacement reaction.

Description/ Findings
(This is the body of the Research Assignment. This is a detailed and thorough information about the main
points of the argument)

Reduction of molten ore by the process of electrolysis is one of the three main methods of extracting metals from their
ore. The process of decomposing the compounds of metals in certain way in order to get the metal is known as the
extraction of metals. Electrolysis is defined as a displacement reaction of decomposing ionic compounds into their
elements by passing a direct electric current through the compound in a fluid form and it is the most powerful way to
decompose a metal ore. Electrolysis means splitting by electricity. Extraction of iron from iron ore is a process in which
a metal is extracted from its compounds. The raw materials and apparatus required to conduct electrolysis in order to
separate iron from its compound haematite ore are: Iron ore or haematite, coke, limestone and air and blast furnace is
the apparatus.

Zone 1: A blast furnace is a gigantic, steel stack lined with refractory brick where the concentrated iron ore, coke, and
limestone are dumped from the top, and a blast of hot air is blown into the bottom. At first coke is concentrated, it is an
impure carbon and it burns in the hot air blast to form carbon dioxide. This strongly exothermic reaction is described in a
word equation as: C(s) + O2 (g) - CO2 (g)

Zone 2: More coke is added to the furnace and reduces the carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide, a good reducing agent.
Calcination has occurred here because the iron is heated to a high temperature but below the melting or fusing point.
This is the word equation for the reaction: CO 2(g) + C(s) → 2CO(g) Here, the coke functions as a reducing agent. At
high temperatures the carbon dioxide formed, reacts with more coke (carbon) to form carbon monoxide

Conclusion
(This is a brief summary of all of the main points or facts mentioned in the body. There should be a
reiteration of the thesis statement. Students should give a closing remark or thought)

A displacement reaction is quite important because by applying this reaction we can obtain purified metals and such
metals are essential for sustaining an easy life for us because they are used to make materials for making items that make
our everyday life easier and simpler. For example, purified iron is used for cars, trucks, and other vehicles.
