REVISION SHEET FOR MID YEAR EXAM 2021-2022

THE PERIODIC TABLE & THE REACTIVITY SERIES
YEAR 3
1ST SEMESTER

The following points will help you study from the Periodic
Table chapter; Topics 7.1-8.1

1. What does the periodic table show?

All the elements, their names and symbols
2. How are the elements arranged on the current
periodic table?
In order of increasing atomic number/proton number
3. What is the atomic number and mass number?
Atomic number = number of protons
Mass number = number of protons + number of neutrons
4. What is a period and what is a group on the periodic table?
Groups = the vertical columns on the periodic table (8 groups)
Periods = the horizontal rows on the periodic table (7 periods)
5. How are the numbers of protons, neutrons and electrons are found on
the periodic table?
p = atomic number
e = p (the atom is neutral)
n = mass number – atomic number
6. Given the position of an element on the periodic table, can you say
whether it is a metal or a non-metal?
On the left hand side  metals
On the right hand side  non metals
(there’s a dividing line in the middle)
7. Be able to give two examples for metals and non-metals.
Examples of metals: Na and Li
Examples of non-metals: Cl and Br
8. What are the specific names of group 1, group 2, group 7 and group 8?
Group 1: alkali
Group 2: alkaline earth metals
Group 7: halogens
Group 8: noble gases

____________________________________________________ 1
9. Learn the characteristics of Group 1, Group 2, Group 7 and Group 8
elements.
Group 1:
-Very reactive metals
-they are solids in room temperature
-Reactivity increases down the group
Group 2:
-Very reactive metals
-They are solids at room temperature
-Reactivity increases down the group
-Group 2 metals are less reactive than group 1 metals
Group 7:
-Their names end in –ine (fluorine, chlorine etc)
-Very reactive non-metals
-Reactivity increases up the group
Group 8:
-They are unreactive gases!!
10. What is the name of the scientist responsible for the newer version of
the periodic table?
Dmitry Mendeleev
11. Know the names and symbols of the first 20 elements of the periodic
table.
(in your notes and on your periodic table H-Ca)
12. Know how to draw the atomic diagram of the first 20 elements of the
periodic table.
example

13. Know how to write/determine the electronic arrangements of the first

twenty elements.
Example for oxygen: 2.6
14. Know how to find the position (group and period) of an element on the
periodic table, if you know the electronic arrangement.
Example for oxygen:
Group  6 (it’s the number of electrons in the outer shell)
Period  2 (it’s the number of shells in use)

____________________________________________________ 2
15. Based on the electronic arrangement, what do elements in the same
group have in common?
Same number of electrons in their outer shell
16. Based on the electronic arrangement, what do elements in the same
period have in common?
Same number of shells in use
17. Explain what happens to the reactivity going down Group 1.
Reactivity increases. All the elements in Group 1 have 1 electron in
their outer shell which is lost when they react. The bigger the element,
the furthest away this electron is from the nucleus so it’s less attracted
so it’s removed easier  more reactive
18. Explain what happens to the reactivity going down Group 2.
Reactivity increases. All the elements in Group 2 have 2 electrons in
their outer shell that are lost when they react. The bigger the element,
the furthest away those electrons are from the nucleus so they are less
attracted so they are removed easier  more reactive
19. Compare and contrast the observations made with group 1 elements
with water.
Li  least reactive, no sound, bubbles of gas/effervescence/ fizzing, the
metal moves around the surface of the water slowly and slowly
disappears
Na  more reactive than Li, hissing noise, metal forms a ball and
moves around quickly on the surface of water, slowly disappears,
bubbles of gas/effervescence/ fizzing
K  more reactive than Na, hissing noise louder, metal moves around
fast on the surface of water, the metal catches fire to give a purple
flame
20. Know the word equations for group 1 elements reactions with water
(Li, Na, K)
lithium + water  lithium hydroxide + hydrogen
sodium + water  sodium hydroxide + hydrogen
potassium + water  potassium hydroxide + hydrogen
21. Know the balanced symbol equations of group 1 elements reactions
with water (Li, Na, K)
2Li + 2H2O  2LiOH + H2
2Na + 2H2O  2NaOH + H2
2K + 2H2O  2KOH + H2

22. Given all the charges needed, deduct the formulae of compounds.
OUT

____________________________________________________ 3
23. Balance a given chemical reaction.
4Na + O2  2Na2O
elements L R
Na 4 4
O 2 2

24. Know what the reactivity series is.

Reactivity series is a series where the metals are placed in order of
increasing reactivity.
25. Know the reactivity series
GIVEN
The reactivity series is going to be given in the mid year exam, you don’t
have to learn it by heart only how to use it.

26. Know how to write word equations and balanced symbol equations of
reactions:
a. Metals reacting with water
Metal + water  metal hydroxide + hydrogen
2Li + 2H2O  2LiOH + H2
2Na + 2H2O  2NaOH + H2
2K + 2H2O  2KOH + H2

(the word equations too)

b. Metals reacting with oxygen

Metal + oxygen  metal oxide
4Na + O2  2Na2O
4K + O2  2K2O
2Mg + O2  2MgO

(the word equations too)

c. Displacement reactions
i.e. zinc + copper sulphate  zinc sulphate + copper
zinc + copper sulphate  zinc sulphate + copper

____________________________________________________ 4
Zn + CuSO4  ZnSO4 + Cu

27. Know how to write balanced symbol equations of the above reactions.

28. Know whether a displacement reaction will take place based on the
reactivity series (if a metal will replace another in a compound or not)
use of reactivity series. In example
zinc + copper sulphate  zinc sulphate + copper
in this equation, zinc is more reactive than copper so zinc will displace
copper, so reaction happens

29. Know the observations of the reaction of zinc and copper sulphate.
1 Observation: a brown solid is formed (copper)

You should also go over;

 Exercises we have done in class and the notes that were written
 Homework that were assigned
 Quiz that was done
 Handouts given

Note: The reactivity series, the periodic table and the charges are
going to be given

GOOD LUCK!!
