ATA 52, 79: 12.0284 - Overpressure door warning light function Closed Posted: 28 Nov 2012
Aircraft: A320FAM Originator: BAW Updated: 20 Mar 2013

Description Additional Information

It has been noticed by BAW that a large number of relay failures (10 relays) have occurred with 3EN1 and / Engine Type: V2500-A5
or 3EN2 on the BAW airbus fleet when functioned. These failures are normally latent in nature because test PN or FIN: E0244-28A0, 3EN1 / 3EN2
AMM test 52-73-00-710-004 finds these defects only when carried out at scheduled maintenance. Shared Opinion: 0
BAW request other operators experience with this relay failing when carrying out the scheduled maintenance
task.
All BAW aircraft are Post A320-32-1354 / A320-32-1379 TPIS Removal
The Relays are shown in IPC 79-36-08-02. Part Number E0244-28A0.
BAW sent several removed relays to Airbus at their request and they have provided the following for one of
the relays: Associated Doc.
Based on the above results, relay FIN 3EN2 was found defective at the level of contact A-1 on "rest" position.
Consequently, we are in a position to confirm that relay FIN 3EN2 can be at the origin of the issue reported by
BAW.
According to our In-Service database, this kind of issue (P/N ASNE0244 / FIN 3ENx / contact A-1 coaled) is
the fifth reported case. Airbus will monitor this kind of findings and if any comes to highlight Airbus will launch
further investigations on this issue.

Root Cause Updated! Final Resolution
Only one operator reported the issue. We suspect that the the origin of the issue could be down stream of
relay FIN 3EN1 or 3EN2.
Relays FIN 3ENx drive relays FIN 18WNx, which are inductive circuits. At FIN 3ENx opening, an
overcurrent flows through contact A-1 due to the FIN 18WNx coil, leading to contact coaling.

Best Practices - Mitigation Actions

Progress Status
It was proposed to BAW to participate to an evaluation on two A/C: change relay 18WN by a different PN.
After 12 months, remove and send relays 3EN1 /3EN2 to Airbus for investigation.
New PN ASNE0666D25C1 should not create this coaling phenomenun.
