Kunal Jhamb is a bike enthusiast who has forayed
into entrepreneurship and has a portal by the name
of www.bikeradda.com. He often goes bike trekking
with friends and exploring the country side.
Hey Kunal, It’s great to have you with us. We’ve
seen your latest video blog and feel that you are
catching up on a segment long ignored.
KJ: Thank you for the opportunity and the interview.
CCLL: You’ve had a very successful stint with
Advertising Company and with a Consumer Product
Company. Tell us about your experience and career
highlights.
KJ: I have been working since the age of 19, and
that has led me to witness and take part in some of
the best projects I could ever learn from. Best stints
I had were, in organizing events and working in the
pre-production team of 2 major TV shows, Channel V
– “Launch Pad” & “Harsha ki Khoj” – the realty based
cricket commentator hunt show back in 2004.
Started working with a friend who used to host social
events (early evening parties) at the hot spots in
Mumbai back then. Also jumped on the opportunity
to be the sales supervisor for the launch of Hindustan
Times Newspaper in Mumbai (2005), handling a
work with a team or how to build my team to reach
targets. Thereafter, I got a small contractual job with
Tata Tele Services Maharashtra, and saw how the
network department works there, saw the first
corporate users (now a commonly used USB Internet
dongle) being launched in India. Eventually that’s
when I thought of stability in my career and took a
chance and started as an intern with Ogilvy &
worked as an intern for 6 months on the Tata Sky
brand, in the Account Management vertical of this
creative advertising agency. I got hired by a toy
brand, Leo Mattel and luckily got a move to a bigger
brand Vodafone - Maharashtra & Goa and learnt all I
creative thoughts can be used for effective adver-
tising/marketing. Eventually I got an opportunity to
work with Bajaj Electricals, joined them as an Asst.
Marketing Manager for some of the indoor appliances
product portfolio. After a short period with Bajaj, I
moved out to join DDB Mudra to work for the brand
Volkswagen Passenger Cars India, getting back to
the advertising circuit. In my one and half year stint
with this agency, we effectively launched a couple of
cars like the Polo GT TSI & TDI, Polo SR, Cross Polo,
Vento 2012. We basically designed the national
advertising campaign (Print, TVC, OOH) for these
launches. Simultaneous working on new client pitch,
here I also got to work on the launch of “Game of
Thrones”, a HBO TV series, in India. While also
handling a real estate brand - Nirmal Lifestyle in
Mumbai, launched multiple projects with them as
well. With all this experience I joined a real estate
consultancy firm as the Project Marketing Manager,
where I was responsible to launch the first of its kind
- Industrial Township (Residential, Industrial Galas &
Mall) in Ambernath, Maharashtra. Also single
handedly launching and executing all advertising &
marketing strategies including designing all the
marketing and communication tone for this project
from scratch and spending the allocated budget of
Rs.1+ crore on the Launch, ad agencies & digital
marketing agency. That’s when I got all the
confidence I needed to pursue the path and the
uncertain life of entrepreneurship. Am happy that my
past experiences have enabled me to combine all my
knowledge and information to get to a stage where,
now I have started my own internet company called
– Bikeradda.com.
CCLL: Oh Wow! That’s too much experience in such
a short span. What were your learning’s on the way?
KJ: Learning’s are many. Unfortunately time and
space for this article is limited, but I will point out a
few being the most common. I noticed that you have
to be able to plan things well in advance & think on
your feet and predict the way forward of your
particular work day. Mentally, go through each task
and multiple steps you need to take to get a
particular task completed. Always work via a daily
Task List or Job list. This will help you plan your day
better and believe me when you cross off things out
from a list, it’s the most satisfactory thing to see and
what you have accomplished in that one day. And
most importantly, never be afraid to think. The
problem with most of the people I see, is that they
don’t want to think of anything new or different or as
we call it “Out Of The Box” only because they are
afraid of sounding STUPID or WEIRD. Who is anyone
to judge your imagination? Your job as an advertising
or marketing professional is to think what is not
thought of for your brand. And all new and unheard
of ideas will always sound the goofiest and the most
impractical thoughts. But that’s where team play
comes into the picture, with each of the wackiest
ideas that you have thought of. With some
deliberation and outside perspective you can always
manage to make it into a workable decent innovative
idea/thought/creative output. And lastly, find one
thing that you are great at in life (passion) and try
and see if you can make money doing it. I read this
somewhere “If you’re good at something, don’t do it
for free”. Even if your interests do not correlate to
your career, use your learning’s or knowledge about
your passion to make yourself better at your career.
I am a true believer in the concept that “life will give
you all the knowledge and opportunities to build
yourself towards your passion, but only if you can
connect the dots. And for that you need to be aware;
I guess they call it spiritual intelligence”.
CCLL: Kunal, that’s a very huge collection of
learnings and that’s amazing. What are the
challenges faced by a working professional in the
Advertising & Media World. What kind of pressures
does one encounter?
KJ: The biggest challenge of them all is the
constraint of time, in advertising or any media based
company; as long as the key output is a creative
design or written lines or even a thought for a huge
national ad campaign. All of this takes time and as
soon as you put a reverse clock to a job that needs
as much as time possible, the creative output is
always going to be lesser then what it could have
been. Won’t you agree, that you can always build
upon a thought or an idea to make it better as long
as you have more time? Any creative brief has to be
thought through and timelines should be considered.
In contrast to this, any mechanical job will always
have a specific timeline that it should not exceed to
remain productive.

CCLL: Deadlines, we know are one of the
biggest stressors in the advertising & media
world. So the crucial question here is, is there
life beyond the working hours because we
know that professionals in this industry are
always working stretched hours. Does it take a
toll on one’s personal lives and how do you
maintain sanity under such circumstances?
KJ: As you can imagine handling stress in work
environment is highly subjective as everyone’s
threshold to handle stress is different. Some
love to live on the edge, while most can’t
handle it on a daily basis. But yes, the
advertising & media industry is all about high
level stress mainly due to tight deadlines and
as in any work environment always, “only the
toughest survive”. This profession is not for
people who want to live the dream of 9-5 jobs,
where their capabilities or knowledge is not
challenged on any level. But working in a high
stress environment as such always has its
exciting moments like, working with some of
the most creative minds to solve big brand
marketing problems with an innovative or a
visually creative output. I think the reason
most of us in this industry do what we do is
because we love to think and learn new things
on a daily basis, but I can’t answer for
everyone when I say this.
CCLL: What has been your passion during your
College Education and then as a working
professional?
KJ: All my life I have been an automotive
enthusiast, along with interest in almost all of
the latest and unique technology, not only
restraint to the field of cars or bikes. Since
very early years of my life, I managed to
involve myself with motorbikes. And one day,
during one of my events I got to sit behind on
a Suzuki Hayabusa, and we could manage to
hit a 0-220 on a single stretch of the highway.
Since that day, my perspective towards bikes
and superbikes particularly, changed for the
best. With that much power, I realized how
much responsible you have to be to stay alive.
That also showed me that there isn’t any other
thrill as bigger than motor biking.
CCLL: What is it about Two Wheelers and
Motorcycles that excites you the most?
KJ: I feel that when you ride long enough, the
bike becomes an extension to your mind and
feet. So by feet I mean, you get the sense that
you can get up and go anywhere at faster
speeds then your feet can ever run. All of this
while you are travelling towards a new
destination, finding new spots to look at the
very same sunset, from a different angle, a
new prospective. This oneness to the machine
gives me the ultimate feeling of freedom.
CCLL: How did you conceive BikerAdda as a
project? Take us through your journey,
challenges encountered and how did you
overcome those challenges that a start-up
entrepreneur encounters?
KJ: I have been scouting for bike parts ever
since I owned my first bike, the mighty Hero
Honda CBZ in 2002, and also meeting people
who either are bikers or are serving the biking
consumers through their business or
accessories stores. Hence, having this kind of
information meant, I generally got asked for
advice by my friends on any Two-wheeler
related enquires. This is the backdrop to my
understanding of the biking category in India.
And then two years back, my bike’s battery
died and I had to leave my bike at a pay and
park in Juhu. As I couldn’t find the battery for
my Honda CBR 250R, the bike was at this
parking lot for 3 days in Juhu, about 16 kms

away from my house. And every day after
work, before I headed home I had to take a
detour towards Juhu to check on the bike.
That’s when I saw the gap and the need of a
reliable source of information or which you can
consider an online depository of all the
available products in and around your city. In
simple terms, it is to increase anyone’s
chances of locating the needed spare parts in
time, while trying to make the experience
easier for any Biker.
CCLL: What is it that BikerAdda wants to
achieve through this portal and how it will
improve a biker owners life?
KJ: Biker Adda, when complete will feature a
list of all the business that sell or provide any
service related to the motorbike industry, with
a detailed listing of all business in a city, a user
can easily find the exact product needed for his
bike. Now look at me, while I am writing this
interview, I am on a bike trip to Ladakh. And
as luck would have it, my CBR 250R has a
small leak in the engine which I discovered
when I reached Udaipur on day two.
Eventually, I had to wait at Udaipur on the
third day to find the gasket packing for the
engine head. I went to 2 Honda service
centers and an authorized Honda parts
distributor and still couldn’t find the part or the
solution needed. So this is the exact hassle I
don’t want any other biker or to go through.
With an online repository of all the parts and
services available in a city, a difficult situation
can be tackled easily.
CCLL: How different is BikerAdda from other
portals?
KJ: Currently there’s no other portal in India
that provides a detailed listing of all the
products or services available in ones city
particularly for the motorcycle category.
CCLL: How do you plan to leverage the power
of Social Media to reach out to your exact
audiences?
KJ: The best part about social media is that
people willingly and intentionally or un-
intentionally display their interest and likes and
dislikes. And that makes our job easier to
undertand how they are using any of the social
media platforms, exactly what type of content
is available to them, what they like or ignore
amongst the clutter on these platforms.
Currently, Bikeradda is active on Facebook and
Instagram primarily to showcase what the
Bikeradda Vlogs is covering on Youtube, along
with any news, tips & hacks for all fellow bikers
to learn and understand their machines and be
updated on mostly everything.
CCLL: How did you come with the idea of
Video Blogging? Of course, a visual medium
creates a better impact but with so much of
information overload and reduced attention
span, how do you plan to reach out?
KJ: Video Vlogging as a concept is not new
and users are already bombarded with video
reviews, but I as a consumer of all this
available information have noticed that most of
the content is a repetition of a technical
brochure of a motorcycle or any product.
Without much focus on how and what type of
consumers can benefit from what type of a
motorcycle. My simple concept is to educate
the consumers of all the available options and
make sense of all the technical jargons and
concepts to make the best decision for
themselves.

An Environment that Positively
Impacts Young Children
Jessica, age four, enters her new preschool
classroom for the very first time. She looks
around and tries to determine what happens in
this space? Does she belong here? Will it be an
interesting place to spend her days? Will she be
supported as she grows and develops? Jessica
will discover the answers through her
interactions with the physical environment of
her classroom. If she spends her day in an
effectively designed environment, Jessica will be
physically, emotionally, aesthetically, and
intellectually nurtured. This appropriate
environment can maximize her intellectual
potential and provide a foundation for the
development of her emotional security.
How Children Understand the Environment
Young children strive to make sense of the world
in which they live. They try to organize the visual
images and concrete objects in their
environment into meaningful systems. Children
want to determine how the space works and
what activities can happen in this place. Today's
young children are spending a large number of
hours in a "new" environment—child care. Some
children who begin attending child care in
infancy may spend as much as 12,000 hours in
this setting. This massive number of hours in
one environment demands that the space be
carefully designed to create the "best" place
possible for young children.
The Caring Teacher Is a Critical Component
Specific design techniques, when combined with
a caring teacher, can help the environment
become a wonderful place for nurturing the
development of young children. Children who
live in this classroom will have many oppor-
tunities for expanding their knowledge by
actively participating in a world that is
appropriate for their level of development. It
will include spaces for active play as well as
spaces for privacy. Opportunities are provided
for a child to work quietly and areas are
available where small groups can collaborate on
a project.
An Environment that Matches Young Children
The first step in creating an appropriate
environment for infants, toddlers, and preschool
children is to examine how young children learn
and develop. Each stage of development has
unique characteristics that influence how a child
will experience his or her environment.
For example, infants and toddlers learn about
their world by acting on objects and materials in
their environment. As the toddler feels the
texture of a beach ball, pushes the air filled
object, and rolls it across the carpeted floor, he
constructs an understanding of the ball. Because
infants and toddlers learn by interacting with
the environment, their space must be designed
with many opportunities for physically exploring
real materials. Varied materials are stored
where the child can easily select them. Other
items are placed where they are not visible but
can be retrieved when a specific activity or
individual need occurs.
Preschoolers are active learners who continue to
examine materials while beginning to use
objects in more complex combinations. They are
developing symbolic representation as they take
on roles and participate in socio-dramatic play.
Their language explodes during this period as
they try to find "labels" for the objects and
people in their world. Language gives young

Why do Couples look alike?

ou've probably seen it before--two elderly
people walking hand in hand down the street
or sitting at a café, resembling each other so
strongly that they could be siblings. When
looking at two people who are so completely in love,
you probably notice that they look quite a bit alike. Do
these couples actually look alike, and if so, what's
caused them to develop this way? The question is often
posed when referring to happy couples. According to
psychologists, there is a completely relatable reason for
why this happens.
Why Do Couples Look Alike?
According to some psychological studies, the more time
couples spend together, the more likely they are to look
similar to each other as their behaviors and style can
“rub off” on each other. The concept is referred to as
the convergence of appearance. Some of the reasons
behind the answer to why do couples look alike are as
follows:
1. You Look Like Each Other to Begin With
Most individuals already find different traits about
themselves attractive. As such, when we are looking for
a partner, we are also looking for those similar features
which we find attractive. This can vary from person to

Learning centers are effective ways to organize
and support these developing abilities. The
center areas clearly communicate to
preschoolers what activity occurs in this area
and the available materials that will stimulate
their play. Traditional centers as well as unique
centers encourage language interactions, socio-
dramatic play, and the construction of
experiences based on their level of
understanding. By adding literacy materials
including books, paper and writing tools, this
construction will include "reading and writing"
opportunities.
Brain Development During the Early Years
Early childhood educators and neurologists
agree that the first eight years are a critical time
of brain development. Infants come into the
world with a brain waiting to be woven into the
complex fabric of the mind. Some neurons in the
brain are wired before birth, but many are
waiting to be
programmed by early
experiences. The early
environment where
young children live will
help determine the
direction of their brain
development. Children
who have severely
limited opportunities
for appropriate
experiences will be
delayed; this may
permanently affect
their learning. But,
children who have the
opportunity to develop in an organized and
appropriate environment are challenged to
think and use materials in new ways.
Windows of Opportunity
New brain research indicates that there are
important "windows of opportunity" that exist
during the early years. These are considered the
"prime" times for these areas to be developed.
Experts have identified several areas that are
particularly critical during the early years these
include: language, logical thinking, music, vision,
and emotion. Appropriate and interesting
experiences, during the early years, in these
specific areas can have a positive impact on the
child's current development as well brain
connections that will last a lifetime.
Visual Environment
During the first eight years, children are
developing their visual acuity. Their perceptions
of objects, movement, and print are expanded
as they have opportunities for experiencing
interesting visual images. Changes and
variations of design intrigue children and cause
them to visually attend to the unusual. The
young child's environment that includes
interesting visual aspects draws them to
examine a painting on the wall or recognize a
drawing that they have completed. Displays and
panels provide visually interesting content to
examine as children move about in the
classroom space. In the past, many early
childhood classrooms were so filled with
commercial decorations, materials and, "stuff"
that young children were visually overwhelmed.
Today, we are working to have less clutter and a
more organized display of materials and work,
so young children can visually attend to and

enjoy the important features of the environment.
Auditory Environment
Music and sound patterns stimulate several
portions of the young child's brain. A variety of
music and instruments can expand the sound
world of young children, while developing musical
enjoyment. Singing in circle time and during
transitions encourages the children to
discriminate sounds and identify familiar
patterns. Making music with simple rhythm
instruments provides opportunities for children
to connect the object with the sound that it
produces and to control the production.
Recordings of vocals, instrumentals, and folk
instruments provide another listening experience
that expands the auditory environment for young
children. Providing a special area for group
participation, as well as a center where sounds
can be explored individually, can add to the

Emotional Environment
It has been suggested that the emotions of
children are strongly influenced by the
responsiveness of the caregiver during the first
years of life. If the child's joy is reflected by the
caregiver and the emotion is reciprocated, the
child's security is strengthened. If the child's
emotion is interpreted as annoying by the
caregiver, the circuits become confused. A caring
and responsive caregiver provides a positive
climate for young children that will impact not
only emotional security but also many aspects of
cognitive development. Children who feel secure
and supported will experiment, try new things,
and express their ideas.
The appropriate emotional environment also
respects young children, while understanding
individual differences. This means that each child
has a place to collect "valuable" things—their
pictures and work are displayed in the classroom.
There is a place where the child can retreat when
things get too busy, or when he becomes tired.
Independent Learners
An independent learner is able to make personal
choices and carry out an appropriate plan of
action. Beginning in infancy and toddlerhood and
continuing throughout childhood, there is the
growing need to become an independent person.
Children want to do things for themselves and in
their own way. Preschoolers become increasingly
competent in making choices, creating a plan, and
following through with a project or experience. If
children's ideas are valued and their interest
followed they will work on projects for long
periods of time. This process is supported in an
environment where children are able to revisit
and reflect on their plans, while using their
knowledge in ways that are meaningful for
them.
An effective environment is designed so even
the youngest of children can become
independent. There are many opportunities for
them to be successful as they work to do things
for themselves. They are not dependent on the
teacher and constantly asking for every material
they need. An orderly display of accessible
materials grouped together will help children
understand that they are capable of making
decisions. The environment will communicate to
them, "you can make the selection, you have
good ideas, and you can carry out the plan for
yourself."
Influence of Environment on Children's
Behaviors
The environment in which young children live
tells them how to act and respond. A large open
space in the center of the classroom clearly
invites young children to run across the area. If
few materials are available to use, children will
create interesting happenings, including conflict.
If the procedures for using learning centers are
not predictable and easily understood, the
children will wander in and out of the areas with
little involvement in play. The arrangement and
materials in the environment will determine the
areas where children focus their work. It will
also influence the number of conflicts that occur
or the way the group works together. If the
materials are hard plastic, the children are
invited to be rough with the objects with little
concern for their treatment. If a beautiful flower
arrangement is on the table, they will learn to
visually examine the flowers and gently handle
the delicate blooms. Children learn to be
respectful of their environment if they have
opportunities to care for beautiful objects and
materials.
Conclusion
Young children respond differently, based on
the design of the environment in which they
live. An effectively designed classroom has the
potential for positively influencing all areas of
children's development: physical, social /
emotional, and cognitive. Language and learning
are nurtured in an environment that values and
plans appropriate opportunities. The
environment can support the development of
behaviors that are valued in our society, such as
cooperation and persistence. An aesthetically
pleasing space can develop a child's appreciation
for the beautiful world around them. Most
importantly, quality environment can provide a
home like setting that "feels" like a good place
to be.

How to Be a Leader
The ability to be a leader in any given situation,
apart from being a matter of great pride and
respect, is an ability valued by one and all. Now
this quality of leadership doesn’t necessarily have
to be in the workplace or among colleagues– it
could easily be in casual situations, for example
among friends like group projects, peers like
organizing a bake sale or family members like
organizing dad’s secret birthday party. And when
you’re in charge of doing things, you know you’ll
get things done. However, if you wish to be a
leader but don’t know how, then this article is
perfect for you.
How to Be a Leader
The fact remains that all of you have the ability to
lead; whether or not you decide to take that
position up is entirely up to you. So forget what
the world tells what you can or cannot do. Listen
to your heart, be strong and motivated enough, and
then nothing in this world can stop you from
becoming a respected leader in your field!
1. Recognize areas where you can provide
valuable insight
You have to have at least one area of expertise,
right? Now that could be time management,
gathering resources, finance, handling people, PR,
leg work, coordinating with other parties, etc.
Recognize what your strengths are, and play to
them. Don’t be afraid to share your strengths with
your friends – they will appreciate you taking the
first step to get things done. This brings me to my
next point…
2. Be willing to take responsibility
It’s pretty much the job of the leader to be
responsible for the group project, as well as the
activities/submissions of the people involved. If
you’re the type of person who shirks
responsibilities or runs away at the mere mention
of the word, then how to be a leader is not
something you should be up searching on Google.
3. Admit your mistakes
Accept that you do not know the answers to all
questions. Either way, it serves a twofold purpose.
First, it shows your colleagues that you aren’t
infallible – you’re a human who makes mistake
and doesn’t know all there is to know, which will
make them take it easy on you. Second, accepting
that you’re wrong or have incomplete knowledge
about something will only increase their respect
for you, because there aren’t that many people out
there who would ever make such an admission,
especially in front of their subordinates.
4. Apologize when you’re wrong
Saying “sorry” isn’t a sign of weakness but of
strength. It shows that you’re able to put aside
your pride and ego and admit that you messed up.
5. Decisiveness is an important factor
In life, you won’t always be given ample time to
think over your options, or opportunities to correct
your mistakes. How to be a leader? Be a decision
maker because, sometimes, you will be backed
into a corner and forced to make important
decisions on the sport.
6. Say what you mean, and mean what you say
People need to be able to trust your word. If you
say something but mean something else, then it
won’t be long before people stop taking you
seriously for your word. This doesn’t mean you
have to have no filter on your mouth or that you
can be as rude and abrasive as you want. No. It
simply means you have to learn what you want to
say, but with tact.
7. Building relationships is important
You need to interact with your colleagues not as a
leader, but as their friend. The more they think you
as one of them, the more they are likely to open up
to you, become more loyal and are willing to work
harder under you. Communication is key, and make
sure that the communication between you and you
colleagues is a two-way street.
8. Don’t take criticisms personally
The thing about being a leader is to be ready for a
constant pile of crap being thrown at you.
Everything will always be your fault, and people
will criticize you constantly and challenge your
decisions. Sometimes, people might even get
personal but it’s your job to understand that most of
them are behaving that way because they’re under a
great deal of pressure and stress.
Learn to ignore what they say, until and unless they
raise valid criticisms about you. In that case, you
have to be all ears.
9. Always have a backup plan
A majority of the times you’re a leader, things
won’t go as you want them to go. Sometimes it’ll
be your group members’ fault and sometimes, it
will be something entirely out of your hand,
like bad weather. Even when you’re 100% sure of
things going your way, have a backup plan. You
never know when it’ll come in handy. Knowing
how to avert a crisis and using it to your advantage
is part and parcel of how to be a leader.
10. Share credit with your colleagues
See the thing is, credit will always be given when a
group project is finished. But if you keep on taking
all the credit for yourself, sooner or later your
colleagues are gonna become tired of your
conceited nature and stop working under you.

as your team members, and recognition is what all
of them crave.

Perspective on how
emotions affect health
“You are not a drop in the ocean but an ocean
in every drop” said Rumi.
What did he mean by that? Every cell in our
body is intelligent to think and act. We have
60 trillion cells in our body and our health
depends a lot on the harmonic balance and
cohesion of the cells with each other.
In the movie Eat, Pray, Love, Julia Roberts
visits a wise man in Bali, and he advises her
not to try too hard to mediate, in fact, he
suggests that mediation is nothing but smiling
and the line that is a kicker, is “Smile with your
Liver”.
If you believe that this is just a metaphor, let’s
look at the other end of the spectrum to prove
just how crucial this is. Let us say you hold a
negative emotion towards somebody,
something or some event in your life…each
time you think of that your whole body
relieves the emotional upheaval of that
association.
Your mind doesn’t have a mind of its own, and
doesn’t know if the event is happening in real
time or it is being replayed, so it produces the
same stress hormones namely ‘cortisol’. Each
and every cell of your body starts feeling the
same emotion of let us say “hatred” towards
that event, person or experience all over again.
The body isn’t at ease. This is a state where the
condition of ‘dis-ease’ set in.
If you continue to live in that state, your cells
are now getting conditioned to live in the same
state. The Upanishads talk about “Yatha Pinde
tatha Brahmande” meaning “As is the atom so
is the Universe”.
Health of a person, depends on how well all
the systems of the body and the *60 trillion
cells* play the melody of harmony together.
When the cells are living in a state of hatred,
they soon start exhibiting that with each other
and killing healthy cells in the body. This
leads to many forms of auto immune disease.
Like Rumi said, “you are a drop in the ocean,
you an ocean in every drop.”
Be careful of your thoughts, your feelings and
your emotions.
Forgive people, not because they deserve it,
but because you need it.
