REINFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN

BSCE-3A 07/17/2021

WRITE-UPS NO. 2

Topic: DESIGN OF ONE WAY SLABS BASED ON NSCP 2015 AND ACI 318-14 |
REINFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN

Slab -  is a structural element, made of concrete, that is used to create flat horizontal

surfaces such as floors, roof decks and ceilings. A slab is generally several inches thick
and supported by beams, columns, walls, or the ground.
Two-way slab - is the slab supported by a beam or wall on all directions. Must be
reinforced in both directions by layer of bars perpendicular to each other.
- The bending occurs in both directions that turns into dish shaped surfaces.
- Main bar is in two direction and along the Lx and Ly.
- The aspect ratio which is equal to;
Longer side/Shorter side < 2

THREE TYPES OF TWO WAY SLAB: (Based on Support)

1. Conventional Slab
 This type of slab is supported with beams and columns, with the load
transferred to those elements. A conventional slab is classified as either:
One-way: Supported by beams on two opposite sides, carrying the load
along one direction.

2. Flat Plate
 The flat plate is a two-way reinforced concrete framing system utilizing
a slab of uniform thickness, the simplest of structural shapes. The flat
slab is a two-way reinforced structural system that includes either drop
panels or column capitals at columns to resist heavier loads and thus
permit longer spans.

3. Flat Slab
 A flat slab is a two-way reinforced concrete slab that usually does not
have beams and girders, and the loads are transferred directly to the
supporting concrete columns. For more detailed definition: Flat Slab Floor
System: Definition & Description.
BASED ON POSITION

Interior Panel
 The segment of flat slab that is tied on each of its four sides with center
lines of nearby columns is known as a panel. A panel may be segregated
into column strips & middle strips.
Exterior Panel
 The segment of flat slab that is tied on each of its four sides with center
lines of nearby columns is known as a panel. A panel may be segregated
into column strips & middle strips.
SLAB THICKNESS
If the slabs, walls and joists are exposed to weather or in contact with ground, the
specified concrete cover is 25 mm and for other members exposed to weather or in
contact with ground, the specified cover is 40 mm. an if the steel bar diameter is less
than 20 mm, the specified cover is 40 mm.
Minimum thickness of RCC slab is 4″ or 100mm, 3″ for side walk, 4″ for patios, 6″ for
driveway and minimum 4″ thick for parking. It will be restricted to 4 times the nominal
size of aggregate.
