4 ELECTRICAL
4-1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION
4-1-01 SCOPE OF WORK
The scope of work under this specification shall include the design,
construction, transportation of all materials, installation, commissioning and
testing of all electrical services as described in specification and drawings.
All required labours, materials, machinery, tools and other appliances should
be furnished by contractor.
The work shall be carried out completely, properly, satisfactorily,
continuously and expeditiously in all aspects including obtaining approvals
from Kahramaa ENA and Consumers Service Department.

The scope of work shall include the following but not limited to them:
- 11KV Switchgear and switch gear building
- 11000/415V transformer
- MSB/MCC switch brand consisting of transformer and generator
incomer and main pump starter.
- Variable speed driver units for main pump motors
- 11KV cabling and installation between 11KV switchgear to transformer.
- Single core PVC/SWA/PVC cabling and installation between transformer
and MSB/MCC switch board
- Cabling and installation accessories and connection to mechanical services
- Fire alarm system
- Portable fire extinguisher FM200
- Elect. & Control equipments for fire suppression system.
- Emergency Lighting system
- Earthing system.
- Building services
- Telephone system

4-1-02 CLIMATE CONDITIONS


The Contractor should take into consideration the following climate
condition in design, construction and installation of electrical services for
both indoor (including normal air conditioned or ventilated) and outdoor used
equipments:
- Max. Ambient temperature : 50 oC
- Min. ambient temperature : 0o
- Max. Relative humidity : 100%
- Absolute above sea level : Max.50M.
All the proposed electrical equipments shall be rated for continuous service, i.e.
twenty four hours per day, seven days a week throughout its normal rated life except for
necessary routine maintenance.

4-1-03 PREPARATION OF ELECTRICAL DESIGN

The design and drawing preparation work of electrical system is only to be under
taken by Kahramaa’s approved consultant subcontractor, who is authorised to design
system without restriction of electrical load, the proposed subcontractors shall have
appropriate personnel and facilities for carrying out the task and he shall be subject to
review and approval by Kahramaa.

4-1-04 MAIN ELECTRICITY SUPPLY


Power supply to the new pump house of Shahaniya proposed 11000 KVA
transformers shall be obtained from KAHRAMAA’s 11KV network.
11KV switchgear room shall house 11KV switchgear at the site perimeter and
11000/415V transformer and 415V cubicle MSB/MCC shall be installed in new
pump house building.
Power supply to pump house building shall be through 415V main cubicle panel
to the respective sub main switch board as shown on drawing. 415V main switch
board (MSB) shall be cubicle type assemblies to from 4 type 7.
Cable trenches in electrical room shall be covered with chequered plate. Sub main
switch board (SMB) and distribution boards (DB’s) outgoing circuits to be
designed, the main incomer of SMB’s and DB’s shall be Isolators.
The DB’s for lighting and small power shall have 25% spare ways, the DB’s
power supply to air conditioning and ventilation equipment and pump hall
lighting shall be fed through a contractor interconnecting with the fire alarm panel
for shutdown of the units on fire detection.

Lighting & Small Power


The control, instrumentation and MSB/MCC room shall be provided with fluorescent
light fittings to achieve an average illumination level of 450 lux on the working plane.
The luminaries shall be suitable for the proposed ceiling for recessed installation and
shall be supplied with high performance louver in mirrobrite finish iridescent polished
aluminum category-2.

Toilets, corridor and pantries shall be provided with fluorescent luminaries to achieve an
average illumination level 250 lux. All luminaries shall be recessed type matching to
the ceiling and shall comply with the IP rating requirement of the respective areas.
Motor and Pump hall shall be provided with high bay enclosed luminaries with 250W
high pressure sodium vapor (HPS) lamps for operation on single phase, 240V, 50HZ
power supply to achieve an average illumination level of 250 lux by artificial
lighting. The luminaries shall be suitable for continuous indoor type service in an
ambient temperature of 50°C.
The luminaries shall be complete with pre-wired integral ballast and optical assembly
the lighting control of the pump and motor hall shall be through contractor, with
provision for switch from two entrance to pump house area viz, entrance from the
entrance/ lobby main external entrance. Exit lights shall be provided to all exits to the
ware house and shall have 8W fluorescent tube on maintained/non maintained operation
with backup power for 3 hours durations. Control room, M.V instrumentation and
entrance areas shall be provided with emergency lights having battery backup for 3
hours.

External areas of the pump houses shall be provided with security lighting with flood
lights on all corners of the pump house and on all the entrances. The external flood

lights shall be designed to achieve an average illumumance of 50 lux for a distance of


10 meters from the edge of the pump house.

All external lights shall be controlled from photocell/timer switch with manual over
ride facility. Power supply to the external lights shall be provided from respective
pump house/ distribution boards.
Pump house, shall be provided with twin 13A switched socket outlets, telephone,
computer outlet and three phase switched socket outlets.

4-1-05 COMPLIANCE WITH STANDARDS AND REGULATIONS


The contractor shall supply and install all the equipments according to the
specification. The materials shall be new and or in satisfactory condition. The
contractor also shall supply all the necessary labours to complete the work
according to the specification and drawings.
The works shall be in accordance with the KAHRAMAA’s Regulations for the
installation of electrical wiring, electrical equipments and air conditioning system.
The works also shall be complied with the British Standard (BS) specifications, the
Institute of Electrical Engineers, Wiring Regulations and current government
circulars issued to consultants and contractors. KAHRAMAA‘s Regulations shall
take precedence.

4-1-06 CONSIDERATION OF SAFETY PRECAUTIONS.


Adequate safe guards shall be provided by contractor for all moving parts at the
plant whether specified or not.
The contractor shall carry out the work very carefully and arrange so that to
minimise the risk of fire.

4-1-07 LABELS AND IDENTIFICATIONS


The suitable non-corrodable label which clearly indicate the function of equipment
or circuit number (for cables) shall be fitted for all electrical equipments.
Label plates shall not be less than 50 mm * 15mm with white colour and engraved
black 6mm height letters and shall be fixed on frame by two brass screw, nut and
washers.
Warning labels also shall be fixed to the covers or doors of cubicles which contain
terminals or conductors connected to medium voltage supply.
The colours for these labels are red and letters are white at least 12mm height with
following statement "Danger 415 Volts".

4-1-08 VERMIN PROOFING


All the switch boards(incomer, Bus coupling, MCC’s and distribution panel Boards)
shall be adequately vermin proofed. In case where cables enter or leave the bottom
material. All the spare pipe ducts shall be sealed the same as mentioned above.

4-1-09 MATERIALS, EQUIPMENTS APPROVAL


All the materials and equipments which are supposed to be used in this project shall
be formally submitted to engineer approval before ordering of each item . Each
submission shall be numbered, dated and accompanied with manufacturer's
catalogues, clearly marked the actual model, capacity and material used for each
component totally in three copies.
The Engineer shall review each submission, return one copy to the contractor and
keep two copies himself.
The Engineer shall take into account the good after sales service and availability of
spare parts at the time of materials approval.
The contractor shall provide the materials schedule after signing the contract.
This schedule should be up-dated on a regular basis during the contract period and
submitted monthly to the Engineer. The schedule shall include at least the
followings:

- Material /equipment full description


- Submittal number to engineer approval
- Date of Submission to engineer
- Date reviewed by engineer
- Order number/order date
- Delivery Schedule

4-2 EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS


5-2-01 MAIN INCOMING SWITCHBOARD/MOTOR CONTROL CENTRE
(MSB/MCC)
I- GENERAL
The electricity supply shall be 415 volts, 3 phase 4 wire, 50 Hertz alternating current.
All the components of these switchgears such as bus bar system, circuit breakers,
contactors and fused switch units, etc shall be cubicle mounted type, having a minimum
fault rating as mentioned in the state electricity department Regulations. The fault rating
indicated on the drawings shall apply to the whole components of switch board
including main switches, Aux. switches, bus bars, etc.
As per single line diagram drawing, one main incoming switchgear and one Generator
incoming switchgear shall be provided.
Also three numbers of motor control switchgears shall be provided to supply power to
main motor pumps.

II- CONSTRUCTION OF SWITCHGEAR PANELS


The switchboards shall be metal clad, free standing, floor mounted cubicle, suitable for
indoor use. The switch boards shall be built using a minimum of 2.6mm thick Zinc
coated steel sheet in conjunction with an angle iron base frame. The panels shall be
sectionalised as required to facilitate transport and erection. Each section shall be
completely separated to prevent access to live parts.
Cable entries shall be arranged to ensure that the enclosures are sealed to prevent the
ingress of vermin, damp and dust. Gland plates shall be proposed for each panel
including cable Glands. Suitable cleats and supports shall be provided to ensure that
cables are not supported by the cable glands.
Each panel shall be knuckle hinged, gasketed, lockable and totally dust proof to IP 54.
The switch boards shall be manufactured in accordance with the BS 5486 concerning
requirements for electrical power switchgears and associated apparatus.
The access inside of panels shall be possible from front as well as rear side. All the
access doors shall have knuckle hinges on the left side and also all doors shall be
equipped with one lockable handle with half turn latch. All door locks shall be operated
by the same key.
The doors shall be interlocked to switching devices. In case the doors not equipped with
door interlocked devices, shall additionally be equipped with warning labels.
The doors shall be connected to earth system by a flexible suitable size conductor.
The incoming switchgear Panels (MSB) & Motor Control Centre (MCC) shall be Form
4 type 7 rear access type.

III- BUS BARS


The bus bars and bus bar connections shall comply with BS 159 and BS 5486. These
shall be complete with covers and end plates, high conductivity tinned copper bars,
sheradised steel bolts, nuts and flat spring washers. The access covers shall be
equipped with approved warning labels. Fire proof insulation barriers shall be
provided for each bus bar compartments. The bus bar branches shall be considered as
a part of Bus Bar system, even the cross section may be reduced due to taking into
account low load currents.
All the bus bars shall be insulated and each bus bar shall be assembled so that to
withstand the calculated fault current rating by considering the KAHRAMAA
Regulations.
The bus bars shall be designed and manufactured properly, so that to withstand the
thermal stresses as well as dynamic stresses in worst conditions. The Busbar shall
be with a PVC sleeving. Moulded PVC shrouds shall be provided over joints.

IV- AIR CIRCUIT BREAKERS (ACB)

All circuit breakers for use in incoming panels (Main and Generator) shall be 3- pole ,
air break, metal clad type in accordance with BS 4752 part 1 and IEC 157.
They should be capable of making and breaking short circuit faults.
All the breakers are withdrawable type.
The main and generator incoming breakers are motor operated type.
All contacts shall be silver plated and easily removable.
The breaker of main and generator incomer shall be interlocked in such a way that
only one breaker (Main or Gen.) shall be possible to put in connected position.
Auxiliary switches shall be provided where necessary to operate the above mentioned
interlocking system.
Each breaker shall be equipped with following projections:
A - Under voltage trip units shall be mounted on all breakers to provide the
protection against loss of system voltage. This unit equipped with a time delay (15
seconds) contacts 2 N/O + 2 N/C .
B -Over load protection system.
The adjustable range shall be possible for %50 to %100 breaker rating current.
C- Short circuit protection unit
All the breakers shall be provided by adjustable short circuit protection unit.
An overload lockout device shall be installed to prevent reclosing of the breaker
manually or electrically after the breaker has been tripped by the over load or short
circuit protection units. This device shall be manually reset by a spring return reset
push button. Adequate number of contacts shall be provided.

V- MOULDED CASE CIRCUIT BREAKERS (MCCB)


For each motor control switchgear panel, one MCCB’s shall be provided. All the MCCB,s
shall comply with BS 4752, Part 1 and all essential components shall be corrosion resistance
and plated for good electrical conductivity.
The moulded case circuit breakers (MCCB’s) shall be equipped to :

1-Over load protection by bimetallic thermal trip unit


2-Short circuit protection by thermal magnetic trip unit.

In addition to above protections, one phase failure/phase reversal protection shall be


mounted for each motor starter switchgear.
MCCB’s shall have quick make, quick break switch mechanism with silver coated fixed and
moving contacts and arc-extinction shall be achieved by use of carefully designed arc-chutes.
All MCCB’s which are used for motor switching purposes should be adjustable setting type.
The motor control switchgears having its doors interlocked MCCB with thermal and
magnetic protection line

VI- MAIN PUMP MOTOR STARTERS

Motor starter shall comply with the requirements of BS587 and BS 4941 (IEC 292) and
starting contactors within the requirements of BS 5424 (IEC158). The motor starter shall
be of rating to carry the full load current of its rated duty and its most severe load
conditions. All starters shall be capable of at lease 20 starts per hour at 100% full load
torque. Each starter shall be housed in a separate compartment, main pump starter shall
be equipped with soft start unit for fixed speed pumps and DOL starter for variable speed
pumps.

Which shall contain the following, but not limited to:-

a) 1No triple pole MCCB externally operated and interlocked with the cubicle
door. There shall be provision for padlocking in the Off position.
b) Suitable rated motor contactors.
c) Motor starter Test Switch to allow operation of the starter with no supply to
the associated motor 110V
d) 1 No 240/110V 50Hz double wound single-phase transformer with earth screen
and of suitable capacity to supply all control circuits and Pilot Lamp
requirements. The control and pilot lamp circuits shall be fused protected both
sides. The Transformer secondary shall be centre tapped and earthed via a
removable bolted earth link. The transformer primary shall be supplied through a
suitable rated fuse and neutral link via auxiliary contacts of the main fuse switch
with a suitably wired switch marked "Test" for the purpose of conducting
function tests to the control circuit whilst the main MCCB is isolated. The switch
shall be interlocked so as to prevent the closing of the cubicles door with the said
switch in "ON" position.

e) 1 No Anti-condensation heater (off when starter contactor is closed). The


Heater shall be separately fused.
f) 1 No set of Power factor correction capacitors with contactor and fuses.
g) 1 No Ammeter fitted with suppressed scale to read motor running and starting
current.
h) Current transformers of suitable output and ratio for motor protection and
local ammeter.
i) 6 digits hour run indicator.
j) Speed indicator.
k) Local start, stop and reset push buttons.
l) Raise Lower buttons.
m) Local/Remote selector switch.
n) Connections and motor terminations to the motor and power factor correction
capacitors.
o) Protection comprising:
Triple pole electronic motor protection relay incorporating thermal
overload, single phasing and earth leakage indicating percentage of FLC that
the motor is taking continuous monitoring of thermal capacity of motor, stall or
short circuit trip, earth fault trip etc.
p) Fault trip relay to accept the pump set protective trips.
q) Emergency stop push button at each pump and motor.
r) Protective trips and the emergency stop push button shall trip the motor switching
device irrespective of the mode control and shall inhibit the starting circuit until
the fault trip relay or emergency stop push button has been reset.

s) Remote indications and alarms:

Volt free contacts shall initiate the following:

Pump running - Two change over contacts.


Pump stopped- Two change over contacts
Pump tripped- Two change over contacts
Remote control available Two contacts closed with selector switch in the
Remote Position.

t) Motor Heater Control:


The Pump Motor heater shall be switched on when the motor switching device is
in open position.

VII - VARIABLE SPEED DRIVE SYSTEM

General

Variable speed drive system, (VSDS) shall be of high reliability and well provision design
and shall comply with all the international standards applicable for the VSDS Components.
It shall be complete drive system, with motor, static frequency converter and associated
control and monitoring equipment.

The entire VSD system/cabinet as described in this section shall be factory assembled and
system tested by VSD manufacturers factory, to assure a properly coordinated system.

The complete drive system shall UL listed or approved equal

Motor
Motor shall be three phase squirrel cage induction motors. The motor shall be of IP 54
enclosure, the motor shall comply with B. S. 4999 or equivalent standard. The winding
insulation of motor shall be class F to BS 2757 but the temperature rise shall not exceed
the limits applicable to class B insulation at the specified site ambient temperature.

Motor shall be continuously rated, duty type S1. The motor frame temperature during full
load running at specified maximum ambient temperature shall be low enough to keep the
motor body safety touchable.

Motor shall be provided cooling fan of metallic material. Plastic material shall not be
permitted.

Motor shall be equipped with anti condensation heaters. These heaters shall be connected
to 240V/50Hz supply upon stoppage of motor.

Motor stator winding shall be equipped with six temperature detectors (3 in use, 3 spare)
to be used for remote indication with set points for alarms and trips.

Motor bearings shall be equipped with temperature sensors to be used remote indication
with set points for alarms and trips.

Electronic Speed Control System


The speed controller shall be of variable voltage/ variable frequency type using power

semiconductors technology to supply power to three phase squirrel cage induction motor.
The controller shall include a rectifier stage, d. c. current link with intermediate circuit
reactor and an inverter. The inverter shall be “Voltage source” type. The scope of supply
shall include all necessary control, measuring, indicating, protection and alarm
equipment required to complete the system.

The controller shall be mounted in a cabinet of IP 54 enclosure.

The controller will accept the speed set value input signal of 4 – 20mA to vary the speed of the
motor in the nominal range specified elsewhere in the document.

The speed control system shall be equipped with speed and temperature monitoring, alarms and
trip circuits and adjustable electronic speed limit and interlocking switches required for
automatic pump start/stop sequence. Actual speed signal, alarms and trips shall be transmitted
to the control room. Actual speed shall also be transmitted to the starter panels.

A common Local/Remote mode selector switch shall be installed. The change-over from local
to remote must be bumpless.

In local mode speed shall be varied manually from the motor starter panel. In remote mode
speed shall either be varied manually from the control room/TCC or automatically.

The speed Controller system shall be equipped with but not limited to the following protections
and adjustment:-

1. Over current protection.

2. Quick acting fused protection.

3. Over temperature protection reacting to the failure of


thyristor cooling fan.
4. Over speed protection.

5. Earth fault protection.

6. Staring current limit adjustment.

7. Visual means to show any thyristor which has become


defective similarly any component or a printed circuit
board..

Critical Speeds
Critical speeds of the VSDS motor and pump unit shall not lie within the operating speed range.
Other technical requirements
Full technical detail shall be provided in the offer including but not limited to:-

Control linearity, Transient Torque Performance, Torque Pulsations, Radio interference,


Protection.
The VSDS shall be designed to withstand the mechanical, electrical and thermal stresses which
may arise from short circuits or other fault condition and to limit the damage caused by faults to
the component concerned. Injury to personnel shall be completely prevented.

Harmonic Distortion

The total harmonic distortion under the most adverse operating conditions shall not exceed the
limits laid down in the UK Engineering Association’s Engineering Recommendation G5/3, or
other approved standards these limits shall apply both at the point of common coupling and at
other switch boards within the plant’s distribution system. If the calculated levels of distortion
exceed the limits laid down above, the contractor shall provide one or more harmonic filters to
reduce the harmonic distortion to a level to be agreed with the KAHRAMAA’s concerned
department. The harmonic filters (s) shall include power factor correction, where required or
specified.

Information shall be provided concerning the harmonics reflected on to the incoming 415V
supply and at the outgoing 3 phase AC supply. Oscilloscope print shall also be provided of the
AC output voltage wave form to guarantee that the reflected harmonics are within permissible
range.

VIII- CONNECTION TERMINAL BOX (CTB)


The contractor shall provide provisions for connection of mobile generator outlet cables to
the generator incoming switchgear (MSB/MCC). Since the generator is mobile type , so one
set of connection terminals (plug in type), mounted in a weather proof enclosure shall be
designed ,manufactured and installed by contractor in such a way that for running of pump
house in case of main power failure only the output cables of generator shall be connected
(by plug in type connectors) to the CTB cubicle. This cubicle shall be equipped with
lockable doors and mounted on a concrete foundation at nearest place to mobile generator
location.

The interconnection cables between the Gen. Incoming switchgear panel(MSB/MCC) in MV


room and CTB cubicle shall be provided and installed by the contractor.

IX- CURRENT TRANSFORMERS


All the current transformers shall be in accordance with BS 3938 and shall be rated to suit
the burden of all meters relays etc.
Bar type current transformers shall be used in preference to wound type. Short time over
current factors shall be in accordance to full fault level for three seconds . The identification
labels showing type, ratios, rating output and serial number shall be fitted. For all
ammeters with full scale exceeding 50 A, current transformers shall be provided. Adequate
arrangement shall be proposed to ensure that current transformer secondary windings are
not open circuited and one side of winding shall be earthed at the mounting place through a
removable link.

X- TERMINALS
For incoming and outgoing power connections, the bolted type terminals with relevant brass
nuts and lock nuts shall be used. Partitions shall be provided between all phase terminals and
protection covers shall be fitted to all live incoming and outgoing connections.
For incoming and out going control wiring , the screw type pressure connection shall be
used. When more than one connector is required for each termination, jumper bars shall be
provided. All switchboards and motor terminal markings shall be clearly marked with its
circuit reference as given on the final schematic diagrams and drawings.

XI- SELECTOR SWITCHES


Selector switches shall be rotary can type. They shall be of modular construction and suitable
for extension and operation shall be in either direction . All switch contacts shall be double
break and be of hard silver alloy. They shall have minimum continuous current rating of 10
Amp and be of high breaking capacity.

XII-ANTI CONDENSATION HEATER


This heater shall be used for control of cubicles inside condensation. They are 240 volt,
thermostatically controlled type. The heaters shall be controlled by a single On/ auto switch
and be interlocked with related installed switches or starters to prevent connection when the
equipment is in service.
The Anti -condensation heaters shall be installed at the bottom of cubicles.

XIII- PAINTING
The painting shall be smooth, blemish free and durable. Before painting all external welds,
any rough areas shall be smoothed and all surfaces shall be clean and free of rust, scale and
grease. All internal surfaces shall have a minimum three coats of paint. The first shall be an
approved anti rusting priming coat and final coat shall be a gloss enamel. All external
surfaces shall have a minimum five coats of paint. The first shall be anti rusting priming coat,
two under coat shall be applied and two final coats of stove enamel paint gloss or semi-matt
paint shall be applied. The finished colour should be complied with BS 4800.

XIV- INTERLOCKING REQUIREMENTS


The contractor shall provide two types of interlocking for safe & reliable operation:

1- Electrical & Mechanical interlock between main incoming circuit breaker (ACB) &
relevant generator incoming circuit breaker (ACB) connected in common bus bar.
By A/M interlocking system each circuit breaker (ACB) could be connected, provided that
the next one be in disconnected position. In other words the system shall be so designed &
manufactured to prevent any risk of the simultaneous connection of circuit breakers.

XV- POWER FACTOR CORRECTION


The contractor shall make required calculations to find out the optimum capacitor unit size to
maintain the motor power factor not less than 0.95 at normal load running condition.
A single capacitor unit shall be individually installed in parallel to each motor.
Each dedicated capacitor unit shall be mounted in separate compartment at the back side of
relevant starter cubicle.
The capacitor units shall be switched on and off by separate suitable switching device and
shall be supervised by the same motor protective system.
The contractor shall make provisions in his calculations to avoid over-compensation at part
load and self-excitation of the motor as it runs down after disconnection. This may lead in
appearing over-voltage at motor terminals which likely will damage the motor windings.
Capacitor units shall be equipped with discharging resistors which enable it, to discharge
immediately after the supply is disconnected.

XVI- CONTROL VOLTAGES


The Contractor shall provide and install double wound transformers to prepare a 240 volts
AC and 110 volts AC supply, where required for control circuits. One leg of this supply shall
be connected to earth system by a removable link.
For supplying of DC loads, contractor also shall provide and install a high efficiency and The
rectifier shall be cubicle and free standing type.
-Input voltage: 415 volts, 3 phase, 50 Hz
-Output voltage: 24 volts DC
The rating and technical specification of rectifier system shall be approved by Engineer prior
to ordering.

XVII- DISCRIMINATION IN DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM


There are a number of over current protective devices such as Air circuit breakers, Moulded
case circuit breakers and Miniature circuit breakers between the main transformers and
consumers requiring protection against short circuits and overloads. These protective devices
must respond selectively in order to restrict any fault as far as possible to the affected part of
system.
In proper discriminated, the system shall operate as following:
-Routine current spikes must not cause disconnection
-When operating properly, only the protective device nearest to the fault in the supply
direction must respond.
-If this device fails, the one next to it in sequence must respond.
The selectivity of protective devices can be established by comparing the time/current
characteristics.

The contractor shall submit all protective devices time/current characteristics as well as
discrimination schedule and shall select the protective devices, to provide the best selectivity
in the system.

XVIII- DRAWINGS
The contractor shall submit 3 sets of manufacturer detailed drawings, showing the layout,
construction, dimensions, weights and connections to the switchboards before manufacturing
unless otherwise instructed.
No manufacturing work is to be carried out until the drawings have the Engineer's approval
and also the state Electricity Department approval in writing.

4-2-02 DISTRIBUTION PANEL BOARDS


I- GENERAL
The numbers and ratings shall be according to the relative drawings. Distribution
panels shall be installed as free standing type on floor or on wall of buildings to
provide electrical mains service distribution and shall be enclosed protected type
units with specified number of outgoing according to the drawings. Access to
distribution boards shall be possible without disconnecting the associated incoming
Isolator switch. The outgoing feeders shall be divided between the three phases as
far as possible.

II- CONSTRUCTION
These panels are metal clad, dust proof , free standing or wall mounted type and
rated at 500 volts. Distribution panels shall comply with BS 5486 part 11 and 12.
They shall be fabricated from steel sheet with minimum thickness of 1.7 mm . The
steel shall be zinc plated and shall have a minimum priming coat, under coat and
finishing coat of paint. The under coat and finishing coat shall be stove enamelled.
The doors shall be hinged type and shall be complete with non- deformable gasket,
catch and key- operated lock.
Each panel shall have a separate neutral connection bar and a separate earth
connection bar mounted inside the panel having the same number of terminals as
the number of outgoing circuits.
The three cores live, neutral and earth cores shall be connected to the same relative
position for each circuit, for example No.1 shall have the live connection to way
No.1 and the neutral and earth connections in the first neutral and earth terminal
respectively.

III- AIR BREAK AND ISOLATOR SWITCHES


For each incoming feeders, one Isolator switch shall be provided. The numbers and
ratings are shown on the distribution diagrams on attached drawings. These
Isolator switches should have the sufficient breaking capacity to withstand the
thermal and dynamic stresses during fault conditions otherwise a suitable back up
protection shall be provided.
The units shall be metal clad unless otherwise specified and shall be completely dust proof.
The specification of Air break switches shall be in accordance with BS 5419.

IV- FUSES
All the fuses shall be cartridge and HRC type and shall comply with BS 88. The
breaking capacity of fuses should be greater than full fault level at each point. It
shall be possible to change fuses with the live bus bars without danger of contact
with live metal. For each size of fuses the contractor shall provide %10 more as
spare. These HRC fuses shall form part of the fused switch where isolation is
required.

V- CONTACTORS
The contactors shall be manufactured and tested in accordance with BS 5424. The
numbers and ratings shall be in accordance with the distribution board diagrams.
All the contactors shall be used with MCB’s in distribution boards and with
MCCB’s in MCC panels in order to be protected against faulty currents.
The AC-3 duty type contactors shall be used for motor switching applications.

VI- MINIATURE CIRCUIT BREAKERS (MCB)


The Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCB) are plastic moulded units equipped with
thermal and magnetic protection for over loads and short circuits .The specification
of breakers shall be in accordance 3871 part 1.
The tripping mechanism shall be designed to provide delayed operation for
overloads and instantaneous operation for short circuit.
MCB’s shall be type 2 for lighting purposes & type 3 for small motor feeders
according to BS 3781, part 1. The withstanding short circuit level for MCB’s shall
be at least 9 KA. The contractor shall calculate the actual fault level at each point &
use MCB’s with short circuit level more than calculated one.
In case MCB’s short circuit levels are less than calculated s/c level, they shall be
protected by suitable back up protection.
For the utility services such as lighting circuits, socket outlets, water heaters, etc.
The combined miniature circuit breaker & earth leakage circuit breaker shall be
used. This MCB/ELCB’s provide both over current and earth fault protection. Type
2 MCB’s according To BS3871 part 1 shall be used for domestic consumers. The

ELCB’s rated residual operating current should be 30 mA which shall provide


protection against indirect contact as defined by the 16th edition of IEE wiring
regulations.
MCB’s which are used in supply circuit of motors, shall be equipped with
1NO+1NC aux. contacts for alarm, annunciation and control purposes.

4-2-03 CABLES
I- GENERAL
A- Colour codes
The colour of conductors for different M.V alternating current circuits shall be as following:
1) Protective/Earthing conductor: green/yellow
2) Phase conductor of A.C single phase circuit : red
3) Neutral conductor of A.C single or three phase circuit : black
4) Phase R conductor of a three phase circuit : red
5) Phase Y conductor of a three phase circuit : yellow
6 Phase B conductor of a three phase circuit : Blue

B- Cables termination and jointing


For termination, the compression type lugs shall be used. The tools for compression of lugs
must be those suggested by manufacturer of lugs and be approved by the Engineer.
Joints shall not be permitted along the cables.
If the cable length exceed that available on local market, the contractor shall arrange to have
the cable manufactured to the specific length required. If it is not possible the contractor shall
consult with the Engineer to find another possible alternative method of installation.

C- Cable core identification


The contractor shall use suitable markers for identification of each cable. These markers
shall be fitted in suitable positions under cable termination.
The material of the markers, labels, fastenings shall be such that to avoid corrosion due to
incompatibility of materials.
Each core of cables shall be marked by insulating material with a glossy finish and be
unaffected by oil or damp.

D- Cable material and construction


All electrical cabling shall be specified in the cable schedule drawing. XLPE/SWA/PVC
(cross linked polyethylene insulation, steel wires armoured, polyvinyl chloride) type shall be
used for size of 16mm2 and above. For lower sizes PVC/SWA/PVC (polyvinyl chloride
insulation, steel wires armoured, polyvinyl chloride) type shall be used. All single core
power cables shall have non-magnetic wire armour. The armouring shall be rated to carry the
maximum earth fault current of the associated voltage system.

The PVC material which used for insulation and over-sheath of cables shall meet BS 7655
and also the requirement of IEC 332 part 1 “Test on electric cables under fire conditions “
The conductors used in cables shall be of high conductivity annealed copper, which shall
meet the requirements of BS 6360.
The contractor shall provide the calculations regarding the size of cables and voltage drop for
each circuit. The contractor shall consider all de-rating factors such as ambient temperature,
grouping of cables, etc.
The maximum voltage drop shall be %2.5 from the origin of installation for each circuit and
also all the cables shall have the adequate fault rating capacity for each point which they are
installed.

II- PVC/SWA/PVC ,XLPE/SWA/PVC CABLES


1st- GENERAL
2nd- The PVC insulated cables shall be to BS 6346 and XLPE insulated cables to
S 5467.
Cables supplying 3-phase loads shall be 4-core.
The neutral conductor shall sized to the same cross section area of any one of the phase
conductors.
For 3 phase motor supply. The cable shall be 3-core without neutral conductor.

B- Cables installation
Cables shall be installed in following methods:
1- Laid direct in the ground with protective covers.
2- Drawn into pipes or ducts.
3- Laid on racks or trays.

The cables which are installed in exposed areas that may be subjected to direct sun light, the
suitable sun shades shall be provided for protection of cables.
The cables arrangement and methods of laying shall be approved by engineer.

B-1- Cables laid direct in ground


The method of laying the cables in ground shall be as following manner:
- The minimum depth of laying shall be 600 mm.
150mm to 200mm of graded and washed fine sand shall be place to from a bed for cables.
After the cables laid they shall be covered with additional layer of sand up to 200mm top of
cables.
For mechanical protection it is necessary to put cable tiles or blocks above secondary sand
layer for each circuit. These tiles or blocks shall be centred in such a way to protect all the
cables.
The last 200mm above the cables shall be back filled by site soil.

For three phase single core cables which are laid direct in the ground they shall be laid
touching one another in triangular form , the apex of the triangle upward unless otherwise
stated. In order to maintain the cables in triangular form they shall be tied together at 1.5m
intervals.
Where the control cables are laid under same cover and same trench as the power cables,
there shall be at least 300mm of fine sand between the two type of cables.
On the top of the second sand layer the contractor shall lay on, cable marker tape for each
cable. The tape shall be yellow and marked "Danger live cables" along tape.

B-2- Cable drawn into ducts.


The contactor shall remove all the loose materials from ducts immediately before pulling in
the cables. The contractor also shall supply and install suitable plugs for sealing all ducts and
pipes of the installation of cables.
Empty pipes or ducts shall be sealed by the use of solid plugs and all plugs shall prevent the
ingress of water and vermin.

B-3- Cables supported on Racks, Trays


All the single core and multi-core power cables shall be fixed on Racks or Trays by using
suitable cleats or saddles Spaced in accordance with table No.5 of KAHRAMAA
regulations.
The small power cables with conductor cross section 16mm2 and less shall be installed the
same tray or Rack but segregated from other cables by a space of 30mm.
Control cables shall be installed on separate cable trays.

III- PVC/PVC CABLES


(PVC insulated PVC sheathed cables.)

These cables are non armoured cables and shall be used in conduit or trunking.
The insulation level shall be 450/750 volts and manufactured according BS 6004.

IV -INTERNAL INSULATED CABLES (MICC/PVC)


For the fire alarm systems and emergency lighting, MICC/PVC cables shall be used. These
cables shall be heavy duty, 1000 volt grade, mineral insulated, copper covered with
additional PVC sheath.
The MICC/PVC cables shall comply with BS 6207 part 1.

V- CABLE PROTECTION
The contractor shall consider the following protection provisions:
- Where the cables pass through floors, walls or when cables rise from ground, they
must be protected by galvanised heavy duty steel conduits.

-During the installation of cables, care shall be taken so that it is not scratched on sharp
surfaces which may damage cables.
-The cables shall not be left where it may be damaged by weight of tools or equipment.
-The cut end of cables or incomplete seals shall be sealed by sealing compound in
proper way.
All the cables shall be tested with a 500 volt insulation resistance tester when it is installed
and 24 hours after installation.
The cables in concrete (where approved) shall be tested immediately after the concrete is
poured.

The test result should be better than 1.00 MW between conductors and sheath.

4-2-04 CABLE TRUNKING , TRAYS AND CONDUITS


I- CABLE TRUNKING
Cable trunkings shall be built by galvanised steel sheet of min. 1.4mm thickness in 2 or 3
meter length.
Cable trunking and fittings shall be in accordance with BS 4678 part 1.

Attention is also drawn to the 16th edition of the IEE regulations in connection with the
precautions to be taken to prevent the spread of fire.

II- CABLE TRAYS


Cable trays shall be of heavy duty type, manufactured from mild steel according to BS 1449
part1 and hot dip galvanised steel according to BS 729. All the Bends, Tees, intersections
shall be factory manufactured type.

III- CONDUITS
A- General
All the conduits and fittings shall be in accordance with following standards:
For metal conduits - BS 4568 part 1& 2.
For PVC conduits- BS 6099,BS 6053, BS 4607
In case of using metal conduits , only galvanised heavy gauge conduits, welded and screwed
shall be acceptable for general installations. For PVC conduits, only heavy gauge super high
impact conduit shall be accepted.
Conduit installations shall comply with KAHRAMAA Regulations.
The size of conduits and number of cables laid in, should be according table No.4 of
KAHRAMAA regulations.
Conduits and fittings which are found to be below the standards due to poor manufactured,
bad storage on site or poor workmanship shall be rejected from site.
To minimise the bending of cables, draw through boxes shall be used for cables greater than
2.5 mm2 cross-section . Where conduits are installed in straight routes, boxes shall be
provided at centres not greater them 8 meters and also on routes between two right angles

boxes shall be used at centres not greater than 8 meters.


Drainage holes if necessary shall be provided at suitable points for Prevention of water
collection inside conduits.

B- Fixing of conduits
The galvanised conduits in chases and below floor screeds shall be fixed by means of
galvanised spacer bar saddles fixed with sheradised screws in wood plugs in every 1.5 m
intervals.
The conduits installed on walls or ceilings shall be fixed by saddles at 1500 mm distance
apart.
All the conduits must be installed horizontally and vertically. Diagonal installations shall not
be accepted.
PVC conduits shall be installed in the same manner as required for galvanised conduit ,due
regard being made to good practice, manufacturer's instructions and the KAHRAMAA
regulations.

C- Segregation of different services


The conductors for lighting and socket outlets services may be run in the same conduit or the
same section of cable trunking but low voltage socket outlets and other auxiliary services
shall be run in separate conduits or section of cable trunking.
Care shall be taken, that wiring for different services shall be done by different conduits. The
separation of different service must comply with KAHRAMAA Regulations.

D- Flexible conduits
Flexible conduits shall be manufactured from steel sheet and finished with a PVC over
sheath.
All the cables which are connected to vibrating machines or removable items and motors
shall be protected and run by flexible conduits.

4-3 ANCILLARY SYSTEMS AND INSTALLATIONS


4-3-01 LIGHTING INSTALLATION

I- LUMINAIRES
The type & numbers of luminaires are indicated on the drawings. All the luminaires shall be
supplied and fixed complete with lamps, tubes, metalwork, glassware, diffuser, ballast and
power correction capacitor as applicable.
Luminaries shall be purchased after getting of engineer authorisation.
An individual fuse shall be provided for each fluorescent luminaires. For those luminaires
which do not incorporate fuse, permission and approval of the engineer shall be obtained in
writing before selecting and installing a fuse.

All luminaires shall comply with BS 5225 part1 and all control gear associated with each of
fluorescent luminaires shall be in accordance with BS 2818 and BS 4017 and shall be of the
instant start type.
The lamp holders shall comply with following standards.

- For tungsten luminaires : BS 5042 part 1 bayonet cap holders


- for tungsten luminaires : BS 5042 part 2 screw type lamp caps
- for fluorescent luminaires: BS 5042 part 4
For each discharge lighting sources one individual capacitor should be provided for
correcting the power factor to at least 0.85 lagging.
The control gear noise level shall not exceed 24 dB.
All the lamps which are used in luminaires Shall be suitable for mains voltage 240
volt,single phase, 50 Hz.

II- LUMINAIRES INSTALLATION


Luminaires shall not be suspended by means of cables with the exception of certain light
weight domestic and commercial luminaires which shall be approved by Engineer. The final
connection to luminaires shall be done by approved nylon terminal block. Heat resistant
flexible wire shall be connected from terminal block to the luminaires. The metal structure
shall be earthed properly.
The 2.5mm2 cross-section PVC wire shall be used for wiring of lighting system. All circuits
shall be numbered according to distribution board schedules.
The lighting installation shall be strictly in accordance with the KAHRAMAA Regulations.

III- LIGHTING SWITCHES


All the switches shall be rated to 15 amperes minimum continuously unless otherwise
mentioned on the drawings and shall be supplied complete with pressed steel box, switch and
cover plate. Single way switches shall be switched on in down ward mode. The outdoor used
switches shall be weather proof heavy duty, quick make type and suitable for use in areas
subject to moisture.
The switches shall be fixed by means of two plugs and cadmium plated round head screws.
In case of outdoor using, brass screws and plastic plugs shall be used.

4-3-02 GENERAL POWER INSTALLATION


I - GENERAL
The general power installation shall conform to those sections of the specification which are
applicable.
II-SOCKET OUTLETS

The type and number of socket outlets and installed positions shall be according to the
drawings.
The socket outlets shall be wired in a ring circuit by using 4.0 mm2 cross-sectional area
conductors with PVC insulation. A conductor of cross-section 2.5mm2 shall be installed for
earth protection purpose. In damp and outdoor areas, the sockets shall be weather proof type.
The rating current of sockets shall be minimum 13 A. Socket outlets shall comply with BS
1363.
Type & size of conductors, breakers and circuit's numbers used are noted on the schedule of
distribution boards.

4-3-03 EMERGENCY LIGHTING SYSTEM


The emergency lighting luminaires, shall be ceiling or wall mounted and shall provide for 3
hours emergency lighting. These luminaires shall be directly connected to mains by 2.5 mm2
cross- section concealed MICC/PVC sheathed cables. The batteries shall be charged by the
mains supply and discharged in power failure case.
The emergency lighting luminiares shall be in accordance with BS 5266 part 1, other
sections of this specification as applicable together with KAHRAMAA Regulations.

4-3.04 FIRE ALARM SYSTEM


I) GENERAL
The fire alarm system installation shall comply with other sections of the specification as
applicable together with the KAHRAMAA Regulations, IEE Regulations and BS 5839 part
1 and BS 5445 part 1. The fire alarm system shall be complete with a main fire alarm control
panel, fire extinguishing control panel, alarm bells, sirens, break glass, call points , smoke
detection sensors ,heat detection sensors and status indicators all as described in the
Specification and as indicated on the drawings.

II) MANUAL FIRE ALARM POINT


Manual fire alarm call points shall consist of a die cast plastic enclosure with a die cast
plastic cover locked in position with screws. The call point shall be arranged for surface
mounting. The cover and the enclosure shall be self coloured red. The words "BREAK
GLASS FOR ALARM" shall be printed on the frangible glass. Arabic translation for break
glass shall also be printed on the break glass. A testing facility using a special key shall be
provided to enable the call point to be tested without breaking the glass and the frangible
glass shall be covered with plastic film to prevent injury when the glass is broken. The
manual call points shall comply with BS 5839 part 2.
III) OPTICAL SMOKE DETECTORS
Detectors shall be housed in a corrosion proof enclosures arranged for bayonet or plug in
fixing to a base unit. Enclosures shall have drainage facilities for any condensation. Removal
of a detector from its base shall cause a fault signal to be initiated.

The fire alarm panel shall be wall mounted. Upon receipt of an alarm, the Control Units shall
perform the following actions:
a) Illuminate fire zone detector
b) Activate Alarm Warning devices within the Building
c) Operate Internal fire sounder
d) Operate Ancillary devices as appropriate Alarm warning . Devices shall be
deactivated by operation of the “Silence Alarms” switch.
The internal sounder will continue to operate and the Fire indicators remain until the key
switch controlled push switch is operated. This should only be achieved if the alarm
initiating device is no longer in alarm.
Reset of the Controller , after the fire incident has been investigated, will be achieved by
operation of the Reset switch The contractor shall provide additional interlocks between fire
alarm system and A/C system as well as fire suppression flooding installation. As soon as the
first detector initiate, the first stage of audible /visual alarm shall be actuated and shut down
command shall be sent to A/C & ventilation.
The operation of second detector from different zone shall initiate a second distinct
audible/visual alarm and after short time the curtains shall be dropped & operate the relevant
discharge valves automatically & consequently the CO2/ FM200 cylinders shall be
discharged.
After suppression of fire the FM200 extraction fans shall operate & extract the discharged
FM200.
The Contractor shall provide and add gas odoriser to the carbon dioxide to assist in the
detection of hazardous atmospheres and their effective ventilation.
All the power and control works regarding the A/M interlocking system and extraction fans
shall be considered in the scope of electrical works.
This system shall be performed for M.V switchgear room in pump house

The enclosures of panels shall be fabricated form sheet steel, minimum thickness 1.5mm and
shall be provided with a hinged lockable door Protection to at least IP54 shall be provided.
The fire alarm control panels shall comply with BS 5839 part 4 , 1988.
Alarm panels shall as a minimum requirement be equipped with the following:
a) Mains supply "on" indicator
b) DC supply "ON" indicator
c) DC Supply "Faulty" indicator
d) Alarm indicator for each zone
e) Alarm accept push button to acknowledge fire alarm signals, silence external
audible audible alarms and energise an internal bleeper unit
f) Reset push button to restore monitoring systems to the quiescent condition.
g) Integral sealed battery and trickle battery charger where appropriate
h) Alarm transmission facilities via the telephone alarm system

i) Termination for incoming and outgoing wiring systems.


j) Suitable fault indication both visual and audible.
k) Integral power supply with 72 hours battery stand by. For each protected areas
one separate fire extinguishing control panel (FECP) shall be provided.

V) ALARM BELLS AND SIRENS


Alarm bells shall be of the gong type with a minimum diameter of 150mm.
Sirens shall be used for second stage detection.
As soon as second stage detectors initiated, the second audible (siren) alarm shall sound in
all areas.
In the event of an alarm from any detector , alarm bells in all protected areas shall be
operated automatically and simultaneously.

VI) TESTING
The Contractor shall be responsible for the costs of arranging for the specialist manufacturer
or his local representative to visit site, test and commission the completed installation and the
issue of a final test certificate. Prior to issuing the final test certificate the approval of the
local fire officer shall be obtained for the whole installation.
Calculations from the specialised firm shall be acceptable to prove that the proposed quantity
of the fire extinguishing agent shall be adequate to provide required concentration
recommended by the relevant British Standard, to put off fires.
The system shall be proved by actually discharging all the cylinders into the system by
simulating fire condition. The cylinders shall be refilled after the test.

4-3-05 FIRE SUPPRESSION FLOODING INSTALLATION


I) System
Contractor shall supply and install a fire suppression flooding system to protect the motor
control centre room, MV room, and equipment telemetry room, and hall against fire. This
shall be achieved by the use of FM200. The system shall comprise heat/smoke detectors
operating on a "double knock" basis, fire extinguishing control panel, cylinders complete
with release valves, pipe work and nozzles, manual lock off and release controls, alarm
sounders and indicator beacons.
Fire drop curtains shall be installed where required within the protected areas.
II) OPERATION
The operation of the installation shall be fully automatic with override controls to allow the
system to be locked off if the room is occupied and to provide a break glass manual
discharge facility.
When in automatic mode, the operation of one fire detector shall initiate a first stage
audible/visual alarm and shut down the air conditioning system, the operation of a second

detector shall initiate a second distinct audible /visual alarm after a short delay for
evacuation, operate the discharge valves.
Locks and switches shall be provided at all entrance doors to protected area to change the gas
release system from automatic to manual mode.
Break glass unit having key operated switch for manual release of fire fighting a agent shall
be mounted at all entrance to protected areas and shall be provided with a break glass
hammer `` Gas Release’’ labels in English and Arabic languages shall be printed on the
metallic protecting cover of break glass.
The following visual indicators(on Status Indicators)having labels in English and Arabic
languages shall be installed at all entrances to protected area to indicate the operational
models:

Automatic - Red
Manual - Green
Discharged - Amber

Area distribution valves shall have means of mechanically locking in a safe condition whilst
maintenance is carried out. The locking mechanism shall operate volt free changeover
contacts to initiate remote alarm. The following labels in English and Arabic languages hall
be installed near the mechanism:

WARNING LOCK OFF WHEN WORKING ON SYSTEM

III) DESIGN
The system shall be designed to provide minimum fire suppression medium storage
consistent with discharge within the correct time scale and concentration.
The contractor shall be responsible for proper design of fire alarm and fire fighting system.
The pipe work should capable of withstanding the max. cylinder gas pressure and there
should be a manual valve with lock and pipe work to exhaust the gas to atmosphere in case
of inadvertent release gas cylinders.”PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH” labels in English and
Arabic shall be installed on cylinder rack.
All cable trenches and other ducts and openings shall be sealed at the boundary of each
protected area .The following precautionary notices in English and Arabic shall be
installed at all entrances to protected areas:
i) LOCK WHEN LEAVING ROOM.
WHEN ENTERING THIS AREA SET GAS CONTROL TO MANUAL.
CHECK GREEN INDICATION LAMP.
IN THE EVENT OF FIRE RAISE THE ALARM RELEASE GAS.

ii) CAUTION
DO NOT ENTER UNLESS GAS SYSTEM IS LOCK OFF.WHEN
ALARM SOUNDS EVACUATE HAZARD AREA.

UNTIL THOROUGHLY VENTILATED.
Station fire system layout drawing shall be installed at the entrance of the main control
room . Fire alarm areas and fire protected areas shall be shown with different colours and
zone numbers.
Fire detection and fire protection equipment shall be from same manufacturer or supplier
who will design, test and commission the system and will provide operation and
maintenance manuals and "as built" drawings.

4-3-06 TELEPHONE INSTALLATION AND INTERCOM


I) GENERAL
This section of the specification deals with Qatar public telecommunication corporation(Q-
Tel) installation which shall comply with the other sections of this specification as
applicable. Wiring to the telephone will be carried out by others.

II) INCOMING PROVISIONS


1 No. 90mm PVC incoming line pipe duct & also interconnected pipe ducts between Q-Tel
manholes shall be supplied and positioned together as indicated on the drawings.

III) TELEPHONE LINES


1 No. Telephone lines shall be provided for direct connection of guard house to Q-Tel
network.

IV) INTERNAL TELEPHONE DISTRIBUTION - Deleted


The Contractor shall supply and install all boxes and conduits to distribute to the telephone
outlets.

V) TELEPHONE OUTLET
The contractor shall fit telephone outlet box with a white plastic line jack unit , final
connection to be by Q-Tel .The pattern of line jack units to match those used for sockets and
switches etc.

4-3-07 EARTHING AND LIGHTNING PROTECTION


I- GENERAL
Earthing and bonding shall be in accordance with CP 1013 section D and the KAHRAMAA
wiring regulations.
The contractor shall provide all earthing accessories such as lugs or bosses for all
distribution boards, starters, control panels, lighting control boxes etc.
The bonding from these lugs or bosses to earth system shall be done under this contract.
Bare earth conductor shall , when fixed to walls and structures be clamped on to stand-off
brackets to afford a clearance of 5mm. Connections to The earth conductor shall be clamped
or riveted and soldered.

II- MAIN SWITCHGEAR EARTHING


For all main switchgears an earth conductor consisting of copper strip having minimum
cross- sectional area of 300mm2 shall be provided.
All metal frames of the boards, switches, armouring of cables and metal sheath shall be
directly bonded to it.
Joint positions of copper conductors shall be tinned before assembling. All the bolts, nuts
and washers for the fixing of earth conductors shall be brass high tensile grade where subject
to corrosion they shall be bronze.
Joints in copper conductor shall be tinned before assembly, riveted with a minimum of two
copper rivets and sweated solid.

III- EARTH CONTINUITY


All the equipment shall be bonded to earthing system by earth continuity conductors,
insulated with green/yellow PVC . These conductors shall be of the size specified or if the
sizes are not specified they shall be in accordance with SED regulations.
Earth conductors which are fixed to the walls shall be clamped on to stand-off brackets to
afford clearance of 5mm.
The metal sheath or armouring of PVC insulated cables shall be connected to metal parts of
The equipment to which they are connected. In lighting switches, socket outlets and all
equipment outlets the earth wire from the coupling shall pass through a hole in the box and
terminate at a 2 BA brass screw tapped or bolted into the box.
The connection between the terminal in the box or other enclosure and the terminal on the
lighting switch, socket outlet or other equipment shall be done by insulated earth conductors.
The surface of all equipment to which earth connections are made shall be cleaned free from
rust, paint and other non-conducting materials.
The supply and fixing of all Earthing and bonding materials whether shown or not shown in
detail on the drawings which may be required for the proper and effective Earthing and
bonding of any equipment shall be considered to be included in the material and labour
covered by the supply and installation of that equipment unless due allowance for the work is
specifically detailed elsewhere.

IV- EARTHING OF LIGHTING POINTS.


The metal parts of all lighting fixtures which are required by KAHRAMAA Regulations to
be earthed, shall be connected to earth terminal by means of green/ yellow insulated
conductor of cross-section not less than that of the line conductor supplying the fixtures.
In truncking system installations the earthing terminal shall be provided by means of the
third way in a 3-way connector block used at each lighting point. The earthing terminal shall
be connected to trunking earth continuity conductor by means of PVC insulated
green/yellow 2.5m2 cable.

V- EARTHING OF SOCKET OUTLETS


The earthing terminal in the box or enclosure associated with a socket outlet which is
required to be connected by the KAHRAMAA regulations to the socket outlet earthing
terminal shall be 2 BA screw brass pillar terminal tapped into the box or other enclosure.

VI- EARTHING SYSTEM CALCULATIONS


The contractor shall submit earthing system calculations in accordance with IEE wiring
regulations for electrical installations in buildings (16th edition), all relevant British
standards (B.S) and the KAHRAMAA regulations.
Lightning protection including all the buildings and the water storage tower shall be to B.S
6651.

4-3-08 BONDING
The bonding connections shall be in accordance with KAHRAMAA Regulations.
The metallic parts of following installations shall be connected to main earthing terminal by
means of main equipotential bonding conductors:
- Main water pipes
- Exposed metallic structure of buildings
- Service pipes and ducting
They shall be done very neatly and connection points shall be visible after installations .
The metal cases of switchgears, all metal clad or enclosed apparatus, frames of motors,
armouring of cables and metal conduits shall be electrically connected to main earth system.
The electrical impedance between the main switchboard earth conductor and any other part
of installation shall not exceed 1.0 ohm.
All the bonding conductor branches shall be tested for continuity.
All the earth conductors run underground or through walls shall be PVC taped or served
with corrosion resisting compound.
For indication of underground conductors and earth tapes, special marker tapes shall be
provided and laid directly above the cables after the trenches back filled.
These tapes shall be 300mm below the finished surface. The marker tapes shall be
manufactured from high grade polythene 150mm*0.1mm gauge coloured yellow with words
"Electrical cable below" along its length in English and Arabic
The Earthing installation shall be tested and an impedance value of 1.0 ohm or less to be
obtained.

4-3-09 POWER SUPPLY INTERFACE WITH KAHRAMAA

The following Equipment shall be provided and installed by KAHRAMAA:


- High voltage cabling connected to H.V switchgears (11 kv)
- High voltage switchgears(11 kv)
- Power transformer(S)11 kv/415v, 3phase,50Hz
- Medium voltage(415v) cables from power transformer secondary terminals to
contractor supplied"415 volts main switchgears/MCC panels i.e. MSB/MCC".
All 415V distribution shall be supplied and installed by contractor.
The contractor is responsible for requesting electricity supply from KAHRAMAA.
After installation ,at appropriate time the contractor shall request KAHRAMAA for testing
and connection of installation to the electrical network.

4-4 APPROVAL AND HAND OVER


4-4-01 INSPECTION AND TESTING
I- INSPECTION AND TESTING PROGRAMME.
The detailed inspection and testing programme shall be submitted to the engineer.
The scope of all tests to be carried out shall be in accordance with the current KAHRAMAA
regulations, sixth Re-issue, January 1992.
The following extra tests shall be carried out and their results submitted to the Engineer for
his approval and they are to be in compliance with the IEE regulations 16th Edition 1991:
Test on V.F Drive in particular shall be carried out by manufacturers' engineer.

- checking size and type of protective devices so that they comply with specification
and drawings
- polarity check
- Earth fault loop impedance

II- TEST EQUIPMENT


The contractor shall provide all the necessary test equipment and instruments to carry out
the tests under satisfaction of the engineer.

III- TEST CERTIFICATES


The contractor shall submit the recorded and certified results of tests to engineer in
triplicate. The cost of providing the certificates and reports should be included in the rates
and sums listed in the price schedules.

IV- COMMISSIONING TEST SHEETS , OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE


MANUALS.
Three months before starting the commissioning works, the above documents shall be
provided and handed over to KAHRAMAA.

V- NATIONAL STANDARDS
The Contractor shall provide three original copies of all National Standards(in English)

which are referred to in the Contractor's design calculations for all electrical and mechanical
plant to be provided to KAHRAMAA.
Only original copies are accepted.

4-4-02 RECORD DRAWINGS


I) The Contractor shall provide 7 copies of "As Built drawings" (Hard Copies) of the whole
plant equipment and systems in such details to facilitate the operation, servicing, repair
or replacement of any part of the installations.
II) A complete register of drawings shall be included. The record drawings shall record
clearly the arrangements of works , as actually installed.
III) Record drawings shall be submitted and approved by the Engineer before the certificate
of completion is issued.

IV) "As Built" drawings shall also be supplied on CD format together with mother prints
on plastic film.

4-4-03 OPERATING AND MAINTENANCE MANUALS


The contractor shall provide 5 copies of operating and maintenance instruction manuals in
A4 size binders. Manuals and catalogues must be originals and not copies .These manuals in
conjunction with "RECORD DRAWINGS" shall include at least the following:

A- Full description of all systems , equipment and components with manufacturer name,
model number, rating, capacity , operating characteristics in conjunction with all relative
tables and curves.

B- The service manual for all equipment giving the operating and maintenance instructions
and for possible breakdowns and repairs.

C- The proposed manufactures spare part lists for each equipment and unit price lists.

D- Detailed and Simplified wiring diagram of the systems as installed, with reference
number, location and function of each instrument and electrical control item.
E- Detailed and simplified, as installed, control diagrams of all automatic controls with
reference number, location and function of each control instrument and description of
sequence of operation and interlocks.

F- A programme of regular servicing and maintenance for all systems of installation.


G- A schedule of all components showing local Qatar agents, names, addresses, phone
numbers.

H- In addition to 5 copies of manuals, two copies, of manuals


and installation drawings for instrumentation , control , electrical works

shall be provided before pre-commissioning of the plant for KAHRAMAA


staff's study so that they can take part in the commissioning usefully.

4-4-04 SPARE PARTS, TOOLS AND ACCESSORISE


The contractor shall provide the list of all electrical equipment spare parts and necessary
special tools for two years maintenance and servicing of all items of electrical equipment. The
tools shall be of high quality type. The list of spare parts and tools and also details of the
manufacturer(s) shall be submitted to the Engineer approval.
The following Electrical spare parts shall be provided as a minimum requirement , but not
limited to the following:

National Standards applicable to the electrical works, for the sole use of the
Engineer.
B- The set shall comprise all the Standards listed in Clause 5-5-01 together with
any other standards applicable to the specification of the electrical equipment
being provided and not listed there in.

C- The sets of Standards shall be provided and submitted to the Engineer at the
earliest opportunity. It should be noted that approval of some materials may
be with held, until the appropriate National Standards have been submitted.

The complete sets shall be submitted not later than twelve months after the
Contract start date or as otherwise agreed by the Engineer.
