READING STRATEGY: identifying main ideas

Identifying the main ideas in a reading helps you understand the point the writer is
making.

PRACTICE
A. Draw a line to match the statement that best summarizes each paragraph in the
article “Is It Talent or Hard Work?” on page 92.

1. Paragraph 1 a. Great artists not only have talent, but they also have
years of training.

2. Paragraph 2 b. Children are willing to show their artistic creations to


others, but adults would rather not.

3. Paragraph 3 c. Betty Edwards feels that everyone can improve his or


her artistic ability.

drawing while an adult does not since he feels lazy or
has different and can not often search or find his ability
