Problem statement

• Bertam oil field has been developed with horizontal wells ESP artificial lift.

• The well completion design does not allow through-tubing intervention to

access the horizontal section for production logging tools to evaluate the
ICD performance.

• As such, chemical tracers were installed at pre-defined interval along the

horizontal sections to verify or confirm the well clean up and provide the oil
and water inflow distribution profile.

Introduction of the technology & the concept

• Designed to assist in the verification of

production in-flow performance along the
horizontal well.

• Polymer tracers which are designed for

controlled release when in contact with reservoir
oil/condensate or water.

• The presence of a specific tracer and its

concentration in the production fluids allows a
fluid flow profile to be produced at a given point
in time.

• The systems are designed to remain passive

until such contact occurs and remains viable in
this passive state for many years.

• With the ESP completion, thru-tubing PLT will

not be possible.

Planning and executions

• Field developed with horizontal well to provide

sufficient areal coverage.

• Completed completion length is in range 130 –

904 m for 12 wells.

• Integrated with ICD with check valve and swell

packer per 12.6 meter of 5½” SAS.

• Tracer installation via in-situ tracer injection at

KSB per SAS joint.

• 4 for each oil and water tracer are installed at

pre-defined interval along the horizontal section.

• Material & Installation cost around RM500K per

well, analysis cost not included

Field Tracer Results

• Showing the average tracer contribution for oil and water.

• Tracer indicate good well clean-up as all oil tracers are detected from heel to toe during back flow
and main production.
• Reasonably “balance“ oil tracer contribution indirectly indicate balance pressure drawdown
through out the horizontal sections.
• Water tracers indicate water streaking through certain section of the horizontal sections.

Limitation & Potential Improvement
Limitation of the technology :

• The life-span is limited from 6 month to 2 years.

• Un-uniform rate of release, especially toward the end of tracer life-span can mis-
represent the well results (e.g., only one or two still can be detected out of 4 )

• Provide a non-continuous profile through-out horizontal, profile will be based on

number of tracers installed.

• Quantifying zonal contribution on oil flow requires well to be shut-in and flowed for
transient profile.

Uncertainty :

• Provides information on annulus flow profile, flow between tracers unknown.

Operation constrains :

• None, other types of installation may have logistic constraint.

Potential improvement :

• Longer tracer life-span and improved oil tracer design not rely on transient profile
for contribution.
