Assignment 3: Fluid Mechanics (CE 203) Submission Date: 2/09/19

Questions with * mark are to be submitted as Assignment 3 and the rest are given for your
practice purpose.
*Q1. Derive the expression p 2  p1   (h2  h1 ) from figure given below.  is the specific weight
of water.

Q2. A manometer is attached to a tank containing three different fluids as shown in figure below.
Find difference of elevation ( y) of mercury column in the manometer.

Q3. Oil of specific gravity 0.750 flows through a nozzle as shown below and deflects the mercury
in the U-tube gage. Determine the value of h if the pressure at A is 20psi

Q5. A differential manometer is attached to two tanks as shown in the figure below. Calculate the
pressure difference between chamber A and chamber B.

*Q6. A 60 cm square gate has its top edge 12 m below the water surface. It is on a 45 0 angle and
it’s bottom edge is hinged as shown in figure below. What force P is needed to just open the gate?

Q7. Find the force needed to hold the 3m wide gate in the position shown in the figure below if
r=2 m.

*Q8. The gate shown below is hinged at O and has constant width w=5 m. The equation of surface
y2
is x  , where a=4 m. The depth of water to the right of the gate is D=4 m.Find the magnitude
a
of force Fa , applied as shown, required to maintain the gate in equilibrium if the weight of the gate
is neglected.

Q9. Find the center of pressure (from free surface) of a vertical triangular plane area, submerged
in water, with one side in the free surface, vertex downward and latitude ‘h’.
Q10. Calculate the force ‘F’ required at equilibrium on semi cylindrical gate shown below

*Q11. Cross-section of an object (having same section normal to the paper) submerged into a
fluid consists of a square of sides 2m and triangle as shown in the figure. The object is hinged at
point P that is one meter below the fluid free surface. Find the value of ‘x’ if the object has to be
kept in the position shown in figure below.

Q12. A sector gate, of radius 4 m and length 5m, controls the flow of water in a horizontal
channel. For the equilibrium conditions shown in the figure below, determine the thrust on the
gate.
