II. Identify 1 influence of Spanish, American and Japanese occupation in the Philippines
that contributed to the issues of our education system today. (15 pts)

SPANISH OCCUPATION
The 3G or the GOD, GOLD and GLORY were few of the reasons why Spaniard conquered
the Philippines for more than 3 centuries. God means to spread the Christianity. Gold for the
abundance of the minerals our country has especially the gold deposits, and the GLORY means
in honor to the King of Spain and to show off the world that they were once one of the most
powerful nation.
In the context of education, Spaniard heightened or focused mainly on religion so that
Filipinos became submissive and unquestioning. Native Filipinos became their slaves and only
religion / Catholicism was taught as mandatory to them.
it was on the second part of the colonization wherein education was opened to Filipinos
but selective for the few. It was only offered to the illustrados or to the Filipino families that
were rich or have political and economic influenced. There was no formal education given to
the Filipino natives.

AMERICAN OCCUPATION
The equal opportunity towards education was flourished during the American
Occupation. This was their main goal - to educate and to train the Filipino in the science of self-
government. Educational system was established. Various schools were built including the
famous Philippine Normal College now the PNU. The American government also sent teachers
and they called them as “Thomasites” to help the Filipinos become educated. Education was
open to all and it was also mandatory. They also taught as their language, The English language.
Aside from that, Americans sent the intelligent Filipinos to America for schooling. They called as
pensionados. Above all, American Government helped and prepared the Filipinos to become
independent to run the country.

JAPANESE OCCUPATION
It was on the Japanese occupation that schools were being destroyed. On the other hand, the
Japanese taught us the Nippong-go language. One of the most significant was introduction of their
culture and ultra-nationalism in Asia.
