STRUCTURAL THEORY 1 Influence Line for Beams and Trusses

Prepared by: Engr. Francis Arjay Pastores Luz PROBLEM 3. The beam shown will carry the following
moving loads,
Stability and Determinacy of Beams, Frames and Uniform Live Load = 5 kN/m
Trusses Concentrated Load = 20 kN
Dead Load = 7 kN/m
PROBLEM 1: Classify each of the structures as statically
determinate, statically indeterminate, or unstable. If a. Determine the maximum shear at C.
indeterminate, specify the degree of indeterminacy. b. Determine the maximum positive moment at C.
c. If a uniformly distributed live load of 20 kN/m having
a length of 3m passes through the beam, what is the
maximum positive moment at C due to this live load only.

PROBLEM 4. A 25-m long beam is simply supported at

the right end and 5m from the left end. If two moving
wheel loads P1 = 77kN and P2 = 124 kN having a distance
of 1.8m, moves along the beam:
a. Determine the maximum shear at midspan.
b. Det. the maximum moment at midspan.
c. Det. the maximum negative moment.

PROBLEM 5. A 40-m long girder is used for the LRT

project. It is simply supported at both ends.
a. If two wheel loads 𝑃1 = 200 𝑘𝑁 and 𝑃2 = 300 𝑘𝑁
having a distance of 5 m pass through the beam,
determine the maximum moment at midspan due to
Gable Frame these live loads.
PROBLEM 2. The side of the building in the figure is b. If two wheel loads 𝑃1 = 200 𝑘𝑁 and 𝑃2 = 300 𝑘𝑁
subjected to a wind loading that creates a uniform having a distance of 5m pass through the beam,
horizontal wind pressure of 2 kPa. Determine the determine the absolute maximum moment along the span
horizontal and vertical components of the reaction at the due to these live loads.
pin connections A, B, and C of the supporting gable arch. c. If dead load is 10 kN/m, and an impact factor of 24% is
used for live laods, determine the design absolute
maximum moment.

PROBLEM 6. For the given truss shown, determine:

a. the maximum ordinate of the influence diagram for
member CE.
b. the max ordinate of the influence diagram for member
CD.
c. If a uniform live load of 12 kN/m and a concentrated
load of 18 kN move along the bottom chord of the truss,
determine the max compressive stress in member CD if it
has a cross sectional area of 4800 mm^2.
