PROBLEM SET No. 3
(OPEN CHANNEL‐UNIFORM FLOW)
Instructions. Answer the following problems. Write your solution in non‐spring 50 leaves notebook.
1. An open sewer is to be of most efficient cross section and lined with brick, well laid, on a grade
of 3ft per mile. The flow capacity is to be 1000cfs. Determine the proper cross section.
2. If the most efficient of all trapezoidal cross sections can be used, what shape and size of open
channel would you recommend to carry 300 cfs with a velocity of 7 ft per sec? Compare
resulting wetted perimeter with that of Problem 1.
3. What should be the bottom width and the depth of flow for a concrete‐lined canal of most
efficient cross section with side slopes ¾ horizontal to 1 vertical to carry 1200 cfs on a grade of 5
ft per mile? What is the velocity of flow?
4. Determine the slope in feet per mile that a circular concrete sewer, 5 ft in diameter, must have
when flowing at its maximum capacity if the mean velocity is 8 ft per sec.
5. A trapezoidal concrete‐lined canal is to have side slopes of ½ horizontal to 1 vertical and a
bottom width of 8 ft. What will be the depth of flow for best hydraulic efficiency and what will
be the capacity of the canal if the grade is 5ft per mile?
PROBLEM SET No. 4
(OPEN CHANNEL – NON‐UNIFORM FLOW)
Instructions. Answer the following problems. Write your solution in non‐spring 50 leaves notebook.
1. A concrete spillway channel 1500 ft long with rectangular cross section 12 ft wide having a level
grade receives water through a rounded entrance from a reservoir is 6 ft higher than the bottom
of the channel, what is the discharge?
2. A smooth wooden flume with vertical sides is 8ft wide and has a grade of 0.002. The discharge is
190 cfs, the depth of water being 3ft. It is proposed to construct a weir in the flume which will
raise the water surface 1 ft at a section 1000 ft upstream. Assuming the water to have a plane
surface, what will be the depth of water 500 ft upstream from the weir?
3. A concrete‐lined with side slopes of 1 to 1 is 10ft wide on the bottom and has a grade of 0.0025.
The discharge is 275 cfs. It is proposed to construct a diversion gate in the canal which will back
up the water sufficiently to make the depth 4ft just upstream from the gate. What will be the
depth of water 500ft upstream?
4. The downstream face of a spillway has a slope of 45 degrees and joins a level apron at its lower
end. The crest of the spillway is 35ft higher than the apron. There is discharge per foot length of
50cfs over the spillway, the head on the crest being 6.0ft. Determine the velocity of the water at
the bottom of the spillway where it enters upon the apron.
5. A planed‐timber flume of rectangular cross section 16ft wide having square‐cornered ends
connects two reservoirs 300ft apart. The bottom of the flume is level and is 5 ft below the water
surface in one reservoir and 2ft below the surface in the other reservoir. Determine the
discharge.
