Humidity
• Moisture can be present in two forms:
– Bound moisture: water retained in 𝑃𝑎 = 𝑃𝑤 + 𝑃𝑑𝑎
capillaries adsorbed on surfaces
– Free moisture: water in excess of the
equilibrium moisture content
(temperatura and humidity) 𝑃𝑤
𝑅𝐻 =
• Definitions: 𝑃𝑤𝑠
– Humidity (humedad)
– Percentage of humidity
– Percentage relative humidity 𝑚𝑤 𝑃𝑤 𝑀𝑤
x= Y=
𝑚𝑎 𝑃 − 𝑃𝑤 𝑀𝑎

Humidity
• Definitions:
– Saturated volume
– Humid heat: results from high levels of moisture in the air. Humidity makes the air
feel significantly hotter.
• Heat required to raise unit mass of dry gas and its associated vapour through unit
temperature difference at constant pressure
– Wet bulb temperature: adiabatic saturation temperature

Problem 1

• Moist air at 310 K has a wet bulb temperature at 300

K. If the latent heat of vaporization of water at 300 K
is 2440 kJ/kg, estimate the humidity of the air and
the percentage relative humidity.
• The total pressure is 105 kN/m2 and the vapour
pressure of water vapour at 300 K is 3.60 kN/m2 and
6.33 kN/m2 at 310 K.

Problem 2
• Two and a half cubic meters of lumber is being dried at 60°C
dry bulb temperature and 52°C wet bulb temperature. The
drying rate of the lumber is 12.5 kg of water per hour. If
outside air is at 27°C dry bulb temperature and 80% relative
humidity.
• How much outside air is needed per minute to carry away the
evaporated moisture?

Problem 3

• Moist air at 50°C dry bulb temperature and 32%

relative humidity enters the cooling coil of a
dehumidification heat pump system and is cooled to a
temperature of 18°C. If the drying rate of 6 m3 of red
oak lumber is 4 kg/hour,
• Determine the kW of refrigeration required.
