2. Career Aspiration and Gap Analysis

a. Aspiration
Despite the great time working on the client side, I was always looking for a chance to work within an
advertising agency. With the grow of digitalization and digital advertising becoming the most dominant
force in recent years, my aspiration is to become a strategic planner for one of the top digital advertising
agencies in Vietnam within the next 5 years.
b. Skill identification:
The role of a strategic planner is to identify problems and devise suitable solutions. To become a
successful strategic planner, one is required to develop a key set of skills and knowledge. These include:
 Critical thinking and analytical skills: Help strategists analyze and evaluate various information
to come up with insights, make objective judgment and draw logical conclusion.
 Problem-solving skills: The ability to devise solutions for different situations, as well as assessing
their effectiveness.
 Research skills: The ability to gather necessary data and information. To create viable strategies,
strategic planners need to understand not only the markets, competitors, and customers, but
also all the latest trends and technologies.
 Marketing skills: The ability to understand and apply different marketing concept into practice.
Strategic planners often need to integrate various marketing techniques to create a viable
solution.
 Communication skills: As the heart of the agency, strategists must effectively communicate with
peers and clients. Skills such as presentation, active listening and negotiation are required. Being
familiar with different industries slangs and jargons is also important.

c. Gap Analysis:
After addressing the required skills/knowledge for my desire career and reflecting on my existing
skills/knowledge, the following gap has been identified:
 Lacking practical experience: As my existing knowledge are mainly from working on the client
side, I have no practical experience working under any agency discipline. Despite being familiar
with all the roles within an agency and their functions, I often confuse between the strategic
planning process and the creative process as they sometime intertwine.
 Weak analytical skills: The ability to analyze and evaluate data to spot insights is limited.

3. Overall Learning Objectives

After identifying the gap, the following learning objectives have been set:
After the course:
 Accurately differentiate the strategic planning and creative process within an advertising agency
 Develop a systematic method for gathering insights

4. Chosen Project
To achieve the proposed learning objectives, I choose to undertake the Practice-based Studio, which
required student to response to a variety of briefs. I believe this project would give me better
understanding of the agency working process as it allows me to practice under different roles within an
advertising agency. Furthermore, being exposed to different brands and problems could sharpen my
analytical skills. It is also an opportunity for me to build a portfolio for future reference.
